Thoughts on this cowa-fucking piece of dog shit game on the NES?
>>
its not that bad, James got this one wrong

mecha turtle on the rooftops was typically the end of the game for me, if i even made it that far

As a kid I only had III in my NES and IV on SNES

As a little kid back then, I enjoyed playing it a lot. I rarely got past the dam though. Didn't beat the game until I revisited it in college.

>Thoughts on this cowa-fucking piece of dog shit game on the NES?

I always thought the evil turtle boss, because of its dark-gray color and also the fact it uses swords as weapons, i thought it was slash.

Why do you namedrop your ecelebs assuming everyone watches the same garbage as you? Do you retards even play video games?
>>
>>12771083
Isn't it funny how the scenario you invented in order to react like an outraged spaz involves being simultaneously aware and unaware of that eceleb?
>>
>>12770421
It's ok, kinda mediocre and more obtuse than actually challenging. Not to mention a half-assed used of the property, which is forgivable considering it was made early in the licensing stages. Anyway, it's nothing to be credibly called either the worst thing ever or a secret masterpiece.

Things like refilling the turtles' life bars when you complete a level would have curbed its bad reputation for the general public probably; as it is even if you're good at it it's kind of a chore to play casually.
>>
>>12771106
>Not to mention a half-assed used of the property,

I disagree with this. Sure, they extrapolated a lot, but the game is actually more faithful with what they had to work with at the time than people give it credit it. It could easily have been just whatever with a (and I mean "a") turtle slapped on, but the main story, theming, characters, weapons etc are all there and respected. You even get the van and the blimp.
IMO the mere fact that they went to the trouble of having all 4 turtles playable shows that they cared and were paying attention, this shouldn't be taken for granted if you look at the average licensed 8-bit game like some of the Astérix games which have Obélix "captured" (which if you know anything about the story is beyond ridiculous).
The story in the TMNT game is also level centric, meaning episodic just like a cartoon or comic book, with intermissions in between. This also shows care and effort.

They mostly only extrapolated with the enemy design, they probably thought that foot soldiers and mousers weren't enough of a roster. In the next games they figured that's not what the audiance wanted and this is why the sequels have so many more footsoldiers of various colours and with different roles and weapons, something you don't have to that extent in the source material either, but which the audiance are more keen to accept than full-on OCs.

>>
>>12771160
Yeah, you're right. Considering they were probably working with an early general outline document at most they really went above and beyond to include everything they could as the basis for level and gameplay elements. The regular mooks got the worst of the "extrapolation", but it's not as if they didn't put in the basics as well.
>>
Great game. Better than any of the other Turtles games on the NES.

If I recall right design docs in the Cowabunga Collection show they were basically sent references for the toys and not much else.
>>
>>12770421
Honestly no one questioned how good or bad it was when it released since the bar for NES games was extremely low. It was a TMNT game and everyone wanted to play it and if you had it you played it and were happy despite the jank.

I disliked the game in 1989 but once I got gud it became one of my favorite NES titles.

It still boggles my mind that people think AVGN, a character in vidya sketch comedy, is representative of anyone's real opinions. It's like on a level lower than thinking pro wrestling is real. Imagine how fat, gay, and retarded you would have to be to watch that episode and think, "Yeah, this fake character's take is the consensus on this game."
>>
>>12770421
The enemies were bizarre and the difficulty level was too high.
I think I only made it past the underwater bomb-defusing about three times. Apparently, it only gets harder from there.
I liked to hang out on top of the dam because I couldn't bear to jump in.
It makes me wonder what the playtesters pushed back on.

>>12771550
It still boogles my mind that autist can't handle common facts about anything, in this case retro video games games and need some kind of social consensus about thing. AVGN is just pointing out outrageously assholish dev decisions that crank up game difficulty and gets mad about not being able to beat it. Why do you think that AVGN never touches overglorified autistic pieces of shits like legend of zelda or final fantasy but speaks about them as good? Because he doesn't care about shit games, he cares about difficult games. It doesn't matter if they are good or not but is smart enought to not cause outrage in autistic fields where it is not necessary.

True
>Great game.
Don't know if I'd go that far. I'd say it's decent, pretty good. Good ideas, jank implementation.

>>12771416
Also true. Main thing to consider here is that many people often just evaluated the amount they'd be able to play on (eg) a weekend rental or at their friend's house, in a game with no save files, passwords or warps. Personally, I never made it past Mecaturtle and never saved Splinter. Still thought it was a good game because it was fun up to that point A lot of the most frustrating jank in this game isn't really apparent until the later levels (though there are hints of it early on, like that last jump you have to make in the dam before the water segment)

Nah, everything AVGN said about it is actually true, but the thing is no one went out of their way to shit on the game before that episode because it was no more difficult or janky than most other NES games. He did the pro wrestling thing where you take something from irl and turn it up to 11 to get a reaction, and then suddenly there were shitloads of NPCs repeating what he said as if the game was actually that hated before then. Meanwhile Ninja Gaiden gets a free pass because that episode wasn't as memorable and speedrunners use it to flex. Ok.

It's been analyzed and the game was programmed wrong. Behind the code goes into it in-depth in multiple videos.

The gravity is only calculated every 1/30 sec instead of 1/60 sec, the way the PPU interprets it. That's why the turtles jump retardedly high and float back down. That's also why sometimes you'll swear you pressed B but you didn't attack. You pressed and released the button on the 1/30 of a second when the CPU isn't interpreting anything, only doubling the previous 1/30 of a second.

The collision on the swimming level is fucked too. The collision boxes on the seaweed are actually smaller than they look, but the collision on the turtles is based on velocity and projected position. So if you go too fast it grows your hitbox in the direction you're moving and you'll take damage on shit nowhere near you. In a timed level, that's just stupid to punish people for trying to hurry.

Even without the bugs, that level where you try to find the technodrome is fucking unforgiving. It goes beyond hard to anti-fun. Especially if Donatello dies. Farming scrolls just so you can hurt things is not fun.
>>

>>12772406

>>
>>12772406
Konami assigned their shit programmers to the first game because they just considered it some shitty license for western insects so who cares. Only once they saw it sell 6 gorillion copies did they actually put some effort into the sequels.
>>
An example of how important level design is.
The movement is good, the enemy variety ain't bad, combat is fun.
But the shitty level design ruins it all.
>>
>>12772892
nta but it's a video by DisplacedGamers. He's covered bugs in lots of old games though, metroid, megaman series etc, so I don't think it means a game is bad if he points out some bugs or some collision is slightly off or something.
>>
>>12772406
Everything he points out in that video are super minor things nobody even noticed and which also exist in tons of games that people love.
But then here you are, you saw the video, so that must mean it's something exceptional right.
>>
>>12771979
I would have agreed with you when I was still 10. This sort of game gets way too repetitive after a few stages.
>>
>>12772406

I find it impossible believe they didn't know this was the case, because the levels seemed designed around it. I wouldn't call it a glitch, just a weird choice.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5VuU2rvPmGI
The game share similarities with Getsu Fuma Den, including the tall jumps. I assume they just wanted you to feel acrobatic and ninja-like.
>>
>>12772963
It's definitely intended. Action games back then loved to do something different with physics, if you take just SMB1, Adventure Island, Mega Man (1), Metroid, Contra, etc they all have completely different physics for the protags. It was sort of a trope back then and even that doc about The Birth of Mega Man mentions it.
The floaty jumps are supposed to make it feel realistic but at the same time they're ninjas so it feels like they float in the air and have some control on the air.
Calculating the gravity every other frame is a sure way to get that floaty feel.

These days people see this and are like "This doesn't play like Mario so it must be a mistake or they hadn't figured out how to make games yet", even the retro (new in the style of old) action games all feel similar to play except for very minute differences.
>>
>>12773008
Yeah exactly. I like how it feels too.

Shredder's Revenge (2022)
>>
>>12770421
The game is actually quite good and has been undergoing a rehabilitation in the retro gaming community in recent years with people acknowledging that yeah the game is actually pretty cool and ambitious for its time. James Rolfe did tremendous damage to its reputation for many years but it's starting to turn around and that's a good thing.
>>
>>12772876
They're called Triceratons. Triceratops was a dinosaur, these are humanoid creatures with Triceratops heads.
>>
>>12772406
The jumping is floaty and so maybe that's why but doing a smaller hop without flipping and doing a very high jump while flipping are absolutely intended, one is tapping the button and one is holding it.
>>
>>12771567
He ripped off Seanbaby anyway. He's a hack.
>>
>>12772074
Maybe modern AVGN. Classic didn't do that. He just shit on whatever game it was in way over the top fashion. He did clarify in some of the behind the scenes videos back in the day that it was an act and they were ranting on little issues in some games for comedic effect because the early internet retro gaming scene that sprang up largely due to him were taking everything as gospel that he rented on.
>>
>>12773086
This is true. I think he's claimed he never saw Seanbabys stuff till after he was doing the show but it's a little too on the nose for me. Sure he came up with a character and framing for it but the main jist of it is very much the same.
>>
>>12773086
>>12773092
I doubt he'd lie about that. But you've got to remember, James wasn't the only person writing AVGN or coming up with ideas for it. I think Mike Matei would've known Seanbaby.

I wouldn't call AVGN a Seanbaby ripoff either, beyond the "pick out an old game with issues and shit on it" thing, it's not like Seanbaby owned that or something that people couldn't come up with independently. And they differ both in the format (writing vs. videos) and style of humor. But yeah, Seanbaby was the guy popular for ripping on bad old games first, if that's all you mean.

>>12772406

>>
>>12773569
Ah well James making the original one as a goof while drunk as the story goes and the Mike helping to solidify it having been a reader of Seanbaby actually does make more sense now that you mention it... He was the real retro gaming autist of the two after all with James being more the film sperg.
>>
>>12773770
James Rolfe likes the game. Mike Matei wrote the TMNT episode and TMNT is one of his favorite NES games. The Nerd is just a skit comedy show, he's not a real person with real opinions.
>>
i played through it for the first time recently
i like getsu fuma den so that helped
i found the tunes good but unmemorable, the gameplay was slightly above average, and the graphics pretty good for that year of the nes/famicom.
i'd call it unforgiving but not really bad in any way, i had no issues beating it in a sitting and had fun.
i'd give it somewhere around a 5 or 6/10, subjectively i'd rate it an 8/10 cause i do like getsu fuma den.
thanks for reading my blogpost

Nah, it's using the Castlevania/Castlevania 3 engine for the side-scrolling segments. It's very obvious when you jump or climb stairs. The top-down sections feel a bit closer to Goemon.

The sidescrolling close up action segments you mention are very obviously Castlevania-like yes, but other things remind me of Getsu Fuma Den like the way the overworld works or the dungeon crawling or the shops. It's not as obvious as TMNT but you can see the inspiration nonetheless imo. It's kinda like Laser Invasion which has 3 distinct gameplay styles, and all 3 are reminiscent of older Konami games.

People don't really think this, outside of children and special needs persons. People generally get that it's acted and rehearsed, that there's a script, etc.

James has outright stated that various of the games he rags on as AVGN, he actually likes, such as Simon's Quest.
>>

Arguably, but honestly you get enough time to work with.

>>12772954

I kinda felt that the seaweed wasn't really fair in its hit detection as a kid, but it just forced me to be even more careful.

>>
Nostalgia or not, I really enjoy it. It's fucking brutal and flawed but I can't help but enjoy myself. Music's fantastic.
>>
>>12771193
>>12776037
The problem isn't really the enemy design, but the mechanic that semi-randomly changes the active enemy set. Which is a neat idea but isn't really followed through properly and the result is wildly inconsistent difficulty and occasional bullshit (iirc there are ladders you can climb down where damage is unavoidable with certain enemy sets).
>>
>>12776514
Yeah. It really is an unpolished game, but I still like it.

The damage they did to the games reputation in the early internet retro gaming community is real but it's because all the bandwagon tards that made that scene up in the early 2010s took what the character said as fact and would repeat the lines and nauseum

>I kinda felt that the seaweed wasn't really fair in its hit detection as a kid, but it just forced me to be even more careful.

If anything the seaweed detection makes the game easier than it looks. It's a similar design to when games have ceiling spikes but the first couple pixels of them don't hurt you or how the hit detection of the pipe plant in Super Mario Bros is smaller than the plant iself. Those things are considered leniancy and good design.
If you were to "fix" the hit detection of the seaweed to match the art, those parts would become near impossible, you'd have to delete most of the first row of seaweeds (the one that didn't hurt you) too and then those screens would lose their "Holy shit this looks HAARD!" feel when the player first sees them.

The real problem with hit detection of level design traps being wrong is when the contrary happens, when the hit detection is bigger than the art. Which is the case in the a lot of games, like the ceiling spikes in Castlevania IV, which most people consider 'the best Castlevania'; my point being those things aren't noticeable to most players so when suddenly after this video was made everyone starting talking how "the seaweeds are broken" and "I've known this since I was a kid" even though this was never brought up before and this type of things is considered good design in other games, yeah, I call this "I got a stupid opinion from a youtuber".

The real issue in TMNT isn't the seaweed; or the optional rotating trap thingey being a couple of pixels off, but the hit detection of the turtle when swimming.
>>
What a piece of cowabunga shieeeee
>>
>>12777445
I was born in 85 and yeah prior to AVGN the only thing I remember anyone ever saying about the game was "Man that seaweed stage is fucking hard". It wasn't hated or considered "muh cowabunga piece of dogshit" until AVGN blew up. The beat em ups were more liked I would say but this game wasn't reviled like it became online from retards taking the AVGN character as literal.
>>
Played it when I was 7-10 years old. First the swimming section was the end of the line for me, then eventually got to the 3rd map and was stunted until finally being able to clear it and made it easy way to Technodrome. I never reached Shredder, was walled by the hallway.
>>
>>12770421
Dude I had a big ass poster of the artwork from the box art of this game on my wall as a kid. Shit was awesome. I don't know what I ever did with that, probably threw it away after Power Rangers got big and I decided Turtles were for babies.
