I loved BK and DK64 as a kid, I never beat either KRool or Grunty. I would just play all the levels and quit before the last boss I really couldnt be bothered.

the biggest disappointment in playing jet force gemini was how the final boss wasn't some 5000-phase extravaganza going through every single one of the game's gimmicks

I haven't played the games since 2000 ish. The way I remember it they were both very fun and did a great job leveraging past experiences. The standard multiphase battle. I remember krool being a bit padded because they give you some hints with the camera pans between rounds.

But yeah, I get it. I like exploring the world mostly. In DK64 I really liked the jack in the box, and the silly haunted mansion "boss". I wish you didn't have to 100% to get the boss rush.

That was the thrust of my motivation. I wanted to know what was behind the note door. I wanted to see what happened when the fat hippo(?) ate all the bananas I brought him. Once I opened all the doors I was content to turn the game off, as a kid I didnt feel the burn to complete everything I played if I had my fill I just moved on and I did not have room for a Gruntilda game show.
