For me it's mostly the DBZ games (especially the fighting games for SFC), River City Ransom, and Karnov. Emulators were poppin off around the same time DBZ was being brought to the US so they seemed to feed off each other and it was fun first encountering some of the characters in the games, before they even appeared on tv/vhs for me. RCR just seemed to be like the first "le hidden gem" type game that was talked about everywhere and the sprites were used in a lot of random webcomics. Karnov though might just be my experience but I remember when my friend showed me emulators it was the first game I asked about, I was like "I remember a game where you're a fat guy and spit fireballs" and he instantly knew, and then afterwards I had similar experiences of people asking me about it and me being the one to tell them the name, so it seemed it must have been a common and memorable rental but one where the title itself was hard to remember.

Battle City, never heard of it until I messed with NESticle
>>12770802Yeah, literally the first game I ever played on an emulator (circa 1997) was DBZ Super Butouden 2. I had seen it featured in one of my country's vidya magazines, but it was fated never to be released officially, so when my older brother discovered emulation, that was the very first game he downloaded so that we could finally play it at last.Aside from that, having played FF6 on SNES, I decided to check out the other games, and I ended up completing FF3, FF4, and almost all of FF5. FF3 was particularly grueling, since I didn't understand the whole notion of save states just yet at the time, and so I pretty much played through it 100% legit, including the Crystal Tower.
>>12770802Before internet stuff that came on the CDs I got from my next door neighbor and uncle, so Phantasy Star 2 and 3, the Sonic games (not 3 as it wasn’t on the disc for some reason), Snow Brow, first time I saw Sailor Moon was on the SMS / GG cd, the show hadn’t even started in the UK yet, Magical Taruruuto game was on there too. This is like 98/99. Then I got internet and it was all the Dragonball games (even downloaded Idainaru for PS1 and played it in Connectix VGS with Daemon Tools since I didn’t have a PS1 or burner), Mario RPG, Earthbound.

>>12770802Soul Blader for me.Most of the other games I played when I first got into emulation I have since purchased, and since then I've played them more on console than in emulator, but Soul Blader was the one that landed just perfectly in that little slice where I liked it enough to play it for a decent while, but not enough to want to finish or buy it.
As I said in another thread for me Nesticle was:>SMB1I had played it at other people's places of course but never beat it because on an actual NES I 'only' had 2 and 3>Various games non released in my countryLike Samurai Pizza Cats or Batman Returns, two properties known in the my country but for which we didn't get the games>Bugs Bunny Birthday BlowoutI played many NES games but for some reason I have a really vivid memory of this one because I really took the time to invest myself in the game to beat it, write down level passwords on a notepad etcFor those I was using an SNES pad replica gotten with the PC version of Street Racer. Nesticle worked on our old 486 perfectly so I had this comfy emulation setup in the basement for myself while others could use the more modern computer upstairs.Fast forward a few years and I remember emulating Pokémon B/R because I wanted to replay the game and see the version I didn't have but without deleting the save on my cartridge. From there I emulated the 10% English translated ROM of Gold, leaked like almost a full year before the game released in my country. Everytime I mention this one it unlocks someone's memory of doing the same thing. Since it was only partially translated I got stuck at the Unown part and lost interest in the game to the point that I didn't even care anymore when it finally did release. Then it was emulating the old Final Fantasy since in my country we started with 7. I was around 12 I think and this is when I was really learning to read English just to be able to play video games, I played FF4/5/6 with an English->my language dictionnary next to me and was able to figure out basic grammar along the way. After that it's the same as everybody's, ZSNES, Fusion, ePSXe (with a bit of Bleem!), and playing Mario 64 on a poorly coded N64 emulator or rather my brother mocking me for playing Ocarina of Time at half the intended speed in Project64.
>>12770824This. The overworld theme still reminds me of some early 2000s summer spent indoors playing SNES roms.
super kkk bros. and other various mario hacks i found way too hilarious
Chrono Trigger because the transparency effects in certain magic attacks didn't work. This was always the first thing I'd check when a new SNES emulator or update was released.Sailor Moon RPG since it was the first ROM hack I played.Road Rash (Genesis versions) because the roads didn't render properly in most emulators. Kgen98 (later Kega) was the only one that did it right but I had to boot into pure DOS mode to get it to play full speed, and I didn't know how to use DOS so I had to learn just for that.

>>12771091There was only ever the one fan translation from 1999, the other one is an official translation from when the game was commercially released as part of a compilation nearly 20 years later.
FF I and FF IV.RPGs were easier to emulate and play with a keyboard than quick action games when emulators were still janky and I didn’t know how to set graphics settings up as a kid.

Caliber.50 for the Genesis. I remember my uncle saw me playing it on my family's computer back in like 2003 and he started facetiously commenting about how "cutting-edge" its graphics looked. A couple of years later, he got busted cheating on my aunt who filed for a divorce. How's that cutting-edge looking for you these days, Uncle Dean? Not so good? The game was pretty fun though.

We knew it was nonsense shit and we didn't care.
I played this one Famicom Detective game once that was only ever made available as a flash cart game in Japan or something like this. A patched rom was available so it was the only way of ever playing this game outside of Japan.
>>12770802I remember really liking that dbz jrpg game when Nesticle was still a thing. Playing with a keyboard was hard with the lack of good gamepads so I was stuck playing slow games like jrpg's and found a bunch I never knew existed

>>12774185I play the SNES and later systems with a controller, but I unironically think pre-SNES systems play better with a keyboard because you don't even have to move a finger except for up/downFor example on a Genesis controller you'd have to move your thumb from A to C, but on a keyboard I map the buttons to ASD and have a finger on each of them at all times
>>12770802>NESticleMegaman 2, Kirby's Adventure and Gremlins 2 were some of the games I played the most. I remember waking up early on Saturdays and playing on our PC, in case my dad would work with it during the day.>GenecystI played Vectorman 1 and 2, Ghouls 'n' Ghosts and Gunstar Heroes for the most part.>ZSNESPlayed with it for about ten years, tinkering with the layering, sound channels and such. I played some games in Japanese like Rockman & Forte and Scrambled Valkyrie, brute-forcing through menus and the shop in the former. I remember the sound sometimes getting fucked up for no reason in some games.
>>12770862Internet in 1997?Wild.Butoden 2 was also my first DBZ game but I rented a (bootleg) cart from a local video club.Experiencing the Cell Game for the first time being in Super Butoden was beyond surreal.I had no idea about who all of the other characters were, neither on the movies on the game I had any real context so I knew Krilin, and barely anyone else, not even Ten Shin Han at first until they started the 22 tenkaichi on the TV.It really was like a fever dream watching these movies, as a young kid all I cared was these hyper exaggerated fughting scenes and these movies delivered.Eventually I started reading the manga to start catching up with the actual story of adult goku before Z started on TV here.
>>12774772Yeah, when that issue came out, we were barely around the Red Ribbon Saga, no? I recall being very surprised at the notion of Goku being grown-up, and likewise I didn't know who any of the other characters were, except that Piccolo kinda looked like a green adult Pilaf to me. I knew it was legit when we finally got to the Piccolo arc, though.
>>12770802Pokemon Yellow. It was the first game I ever emulated using no$gb around 2000. It was probably the hottest newer released game that was being emulated at the time, the emulator even had a special update to be able to run it correctly (or as close as it could)

>>12776293A local video club>broken bottom partsYou mean the 2 holes to fit on the SNES cart slot? Yes.If you're mexican you surely saw bootleg SNES carts that used the SFC shells but would still fit on american SNES.
>>12774802Ah my bad. Yeah we got it here in 97 and this is the rural Midwest. Only person I knew in 95 who had it was my weirdo friends mom.
>>12770802Sonic 3It was mind blowing playing it on a computer monitor after only ever playing it on a crappy old CRT. I don't hate CRTs but this one was particularly shitty.I couldn't see the parallax backgrounds before.
>>12776297Well what I saw were ACTUAL super Famicom games but still butchered at the bottom to made them fitnon an SNES, I guess NOBODY figured it out to instead break the tabs on your SNES up until the late 2000s, I saw Super Mario Kart SFC in the wild once long ago, same with a Turtles in Time and a Super Butoden cart I saw in the mid 2000s at a local anime convention.I own a Super Butoden2 cart that's also butchered, please DONT DO THAT.By the way, interesting bootleg carts, were the PCBs also bootlegey?
>>12776297How many of those you own?

>>12771404Aww man, I just checked my NES ROMs pack that I downloaded and it's missing from the hacks folder. Do they seriously leave it out these days just because it's too offensive? Back in the day I only discovered it because it was included and it made a pretty funny surprise.
>>12776362Yes troons remove it for being "problematic". RHDN and Romhack.ing don't carry the patch for the same reason. You can still find it on various sites if you Google it though.
>>12776334Yeah I never butchered any cart or console. These bootlegs were ready to be played on NTSC SNES.I don't have a gamebit to open them and check the PCBs atm, sorry bro>>12776335I still got a couple, I should clean them. These 2 I got around 1997 probably.Pretty sure Sailor Moon S or Super S still weren't on TV here yet, but I was already playing with the outer senshi thanks to this Sailor Moon fighting game.As you can see the Sailor Moon game has a madeup label, it uses the SNES/MD first Sailor Moon game art on the left and then some screenshots (probably taken from the back box or manual) and "sailormoon super S" in generic text. The box for this one was a replica of the original japanese box though, but no manual.Mickey Mania is the NTSC version but used the PAL art for the label, the box was also sort of like a cheap repro of the PAL box.
And this is an older bootleg, I assume either 1994 or 1995. This one was part of a batch of high quality bootlegs from the early 90s that were faithful replicas of the japanese originals. They included not only faithful label sticker, box AND manual (all in japanese), but also had a very convincing back label sticker for the cart all with Nintendo branding. For years I actually thought it was original until I learned about SFC games not fitting on american SNES.
This is the back of Mickey Mania.Cart itself feels very light weight, plastic quality is OK but clearly not original. You can see the 2 holes on the bottom so it can fit the SNES
>>12776887brown
This is Sailor Moon. Also very light, plastic feels a little bit cheaper than the Mickey one
>>12776893>>12776903browm
This is DBZ2. As you can see it's a real replica of a SFC cart, the only difference is the 2 holes on the bottom. Is definitely heavier than the other 2 carts, and plastic quality, while not exactly the same as a real SFC cart, is still high, feels sturdy. Sticker label is not glossy like the SFC originals but it's still a good print
Sorry for the spam but one more thing, look at the corner of the back sticker here, it even has a number stamp, these bootleggers really went the extra mile back then

There were two, both on FDS, unless there's a Nintendo Power release I don't remember.>>12774453I mean it is true that MD pads were just made to ensure easy compatibility with JAMMA standard. There's little reason not to use a PC keyboard, so long as it has good switches for the keys. I've done this for many games for years and years now.>>12774185for me it's the shoulder buttons that fuck me up. I can generally do 6/8 buttons on right hand keyboard, but games specifically and clearly made for L and R to be where they are can really mess me up.
>>12770802Andro Dunos Neo Geo, this game ran pretty much full speed at the time, felt like a native pc game. Other games were noticeably slower.Automobilie Lamborghini for N64, on ultra HLE it ran full speed and looked a bit better than the original. In both cases other games usually had issues with graphics but sometimes menus and gameplay.Still like to go back to Andro Dunos, just a solid simple game.>>12770862Stuff like Mario RPG and Dragon Ball Z made me interested in real hardware because of how slow they were on emu and soon after only real deal was good enough. I probably would have thought emulation was good enough if it wasn't for that and maybe never bothered with real hardware.>>12770824I remember on Zsnes how the transparancies didn't work if it wasn't in high colour but that made it 4 times slower.

>>12777117I first played FF6 on real hardware back when it was new, but only because my brother borrowed it from his friend. I later replayed it to completion a couple of times on ZSNES, but it had several emulation issues that annoyed me enough to get the PS1 version later on (I recall, for example, the Atma Weapon blade not rendering at all, transparencies not working correctly, and a lot of sound effects sounding VERY off, such as the wind howling in the beginning of the game and Kefka's laughter).
