The Sega CD was objectively the most based fucking thing in the 16 bit era and I'm tired of pretending it's not. Zoomers today, likely thanks to YouTuber brainrot/AVGN lump it in with the 32x and dismiss it as "HUR DUR ALL FMV GAMES" when those are just a small part of the library.

You stupid fucks act like Night Trap was the only thing on the disc. Meanwhile, Nintendo cucks were getting completely blown out of the water while cope-posting about Star Fox running at 5 frames per second.

I was lucky enough to have one as a kid and I will be eternally thankful for the experience. Post here to show your appreciation for the fucking SEGA CD
>>
anon, they were just genesis games with shittier music and 2 fps artifact-ridden movies
>>

This thing arguably got SONY into videogames...
Think:
>Turbo duo or however the fuck it was named wasn't popular because Hudsongraft wasn't popular
>Mega CD proves it can squeeze a better experience even of already existing titles thanks to (for the time) massive data storage
>Nintendo rushes to copy SEGA but the greedy bastards create SCEA by accident

Listen to the Ecco the dolphin soundtrack and then go please yourself with a Nword64 controller, you wahoo wahoo freak
>>
>>12772614
It has a pretty solid RPG lineup despite the relatively small library. It's also the most successful console add-on of all time.
>>
>>12772621
No they weren't. Snatcher? Lethal Enforcers? Eternal Champions? Final Fight (which has Guy, something Nintenonces couldn't do). The Lunar games? Virtually every Genesis title also added other stuff besides just the audio like the animated cutscenes throughout Spiderman vs Kingpin.

And even if it just adds music, that's cd quality Redbook audio, it was a massive upgrade from what the SNES or base Genesis could do.

Eat shit.
>>
>>12772824
Not a lot of games took advantage of its capabilities though, only FMV and CD audio. Effectively it really was just a genesis with extra storage
>>
>>12772849
You're a Nintenonce agent provocateur

If you aren't take it back and swear allegiance to the Sega CD right now

I'd like to know the experience of people who owned it when it was new and how they liked it. Our perspectives are messed up that we expect to sell hardware that is 3 years old for around what we paid.
There was footage on X about someone browsing the Sega CD section at EB games and while you had the good stuff like Sonic, Batman, Final Fight you had some FMV stinkers too.
I only remember looking at ps1 games where I was well award to avoid anything to do with FMV and cheap licenses or sports games.
Recently have been playing Lunar and there are times when I think its incredible that this is coming from 16 bit hardware, just way more animation and detail than you could get in a cartridge.
Yes the lunch price was insane but I think it came down pretty quickly.

>>12772639
Yet people were clamoring for the 64dd, a ton of people would have brought it.
Just simple animation with voices was impressive enough and Sega CD could do it 30 minutes at least. People rave over that Snes game that has a 2 minutes song.

Based and true.
>>
>>12772614
It was okay. It had enough good games like Sonic CD, Lunar, Rise of the Dragon and the excellent Final Fight port to justify it's existence....but just barely.

The absolute deluge of shitty FMV games absolutely did tarnish it's reputation though and are what most people remember it for now
>>
>>12772614
It was extremely based, AVGN makes zoomers think it was all FMV trash but there's more non FMV games one it than there is the FMV shit.
>>
>>12772878
I had a Sega CD in 1993. I don't use homebrew or whatever you're talking about. Is it good or something?

And you've never needed anything special to run burned CDs, I don't know what you mean about no cd or whatever. I'm strictly talking the Sega CD and its games itself, I don't follow the homebrew scene but like I said if there's something cool there then post it.
>>
>>12772862
Like I said, I had one as a kid, I got it in '93. It was awesome, I was pretty floored by the audio and the video in games was cool though I mean it looked like shit even then but just seeing it in a game was really cool. I used to stay up really late playing shit like Silpheed, Android Assault, Spiderman Vs Kingpin (my friend and I still joke to this day about how stupid the line delivery is in some of the cut scenes and how it has a scene of Mary Jane literally being lowered into a vat of acid and coming back out as a skeleton). We used to stay up late every weekend trying to get through The Adventures of Willy Beamish, fucking loved that game. We never did finish it. I had Lethal Enforcers with the Jusfitier too. It was just really cool and felt special because I didn't know anyone else around here who had one.
>>
The Siga Seedeeznuts
>>
>>12772867
Only one I listed like that was Lethal Enforcers, which I honestly didn't even know was on Genesis till I just checked.

Eternal Champions adds a shitload of characters and stages.
Final Fight isn't on Genesis and has all characters which SNES didnt.
Snatcher wasn't on Genesis.

Try again zoomie

SEGA of Japan was focused on gaining JRPGs with the Mega CD. SoA didn't give a fuck about JRPGs, don't be surprised about the fmv reputation since the games weren't localised.
Say what you want about Working Designs but if it wasn't for them the only localised Mega CD rpg would have been Shining Force CD

I've played this version of SMT and it looks nice, it's the most graphically detailed of all versions including later versions like PSX, but they raped the gameplay turning the game into a complete joke.
For instance gun damage can go up to more than 10 times what it's supposed to be.
>>
>>12773106
>'s the most graphically detailed of all versions including later versions like PSX,
Doesn't surprise me, it's basically a SEGA first party endeavour
>SIMS was founded on June 12, 1991 as a joint venture between Sega and Sanritsu, with Sanritsu transferring 50 employees to SIMS upon its creation, and with Sega managing the studio and company.

There was a small section for them in our local Wal-Mart and K-Mart stores (Midwest) next to the Genesis games. The real haul came when they started getting marked down and clearances. I could go to the store with my mom and come home with 2 or 3 games at a time.

How did Silpheed have FMVs that looked so good that they look like real-time 3D graphics? Why was everything else on the system compressed to shit?

Afaik the used a custom codec to take advantage of the Sega CD ASIC chip for decompression but I'm not an expert on the tech. I do know I had it as a kid and played the shit out of it along with Android Assault
>>
>>12772614
the sega cd is awesome. devs just didn't make many good games for it. I really wish people would do more homebrew on it.
>>
>>12774734
At least we got more than the 32x did.

You know I heard recently that a port of the awesome Aliens Vs Predator arcade game that had Dutch Schaeffer from Predator as a playable character was actually in the works for the 32x before being scrapped when support for it was dropped by Sega. That could've been a killer app for it, that game has never had a home release except on some Capcom arcade stick that had games preloaded on it.
>>
>>12774741
32x is also awesome. people have done some genuinely impressive shit on it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=54udUaTjkVY
>>
>>12774745
Wow that's pretty incredible!
>>
>>12774734
>devs just didn't make many good games for it.
some of their decisions when developing games for it were outright fucking baffling.
>Though the original arcade game [Strike Fighter] used sprite-scaling extensively, the Mega-CD port [After Burner III] does not use the console's dedicated sprite-scaling hardware, instead using pre-scaled sprites.
they'd just straight-up make their lives harder for no reason sometimes.
WHAT WERE THEY THINKING!?
>>
>>12774819
The code for After Burned III was based on the FM Towns / PC port and used pre scaled sprites. Instead of rewriting code to take advantage of the hardware they just used the same method. It was pure laziness on their part.

To make matters worse they actually used up RAM doing that and also gave it a choppy frame rate.
>>
>>12774830
*which used pre scaled sprites

They just ported the code over and used the same pre scaled sprite method the FM Towns used
>>
>>12772614
The added processing ability allowed for effects like scaling and rotation which were very needed, but they just couldn't address the biggest issue which was onscreen color count. They did capture a bit of the magic of the PC-Engine CD games, but ultimately the lack of colors was still too restrictive. I still do appreciate what the add-on brought to the table just all the cool games with it.
>>
>>12773104
>Say what you want about Working Designs
I went from loving them as a kid, to hating them when I learned about all the changes they made, to now just seeing them as historically significant. One way or another they raised the bar for translations and they became much more readable and then also more accurate as a result.
>>
Some of the "people" on this board are honestly just sad. Some of us don't give a shit which console a game is on as long as it's worth playing, and the Sega CD has a fair share of great games that are still worth playing today. Simple as. If you think it needs to be more complicated than that, games aren't about having fun to you.
>>
>>12772614

>>
>>12774158
It's easy to like the Sega CD when you can just pick the best games and everything is free. Imagine spending 300 bucks on this thinking it's a leap into the future and getting 5 fps Marky Mark videos to play with. Meanwhile you have to keep buying cartridges because all the best games are still on the base system. You would be pissed.
>>
>>12775320
I worked at Blockbuster and that didn't happen. We would sell old stock to clear out space but there was no "keep it" option.

Not actually true, a small number of games were only available for rental at Blockbuster and not being sold anywhere officially. ClayFighter Sculptor's Cut, for example.
>>
For people bitching abkut FMV in 1993 this wasnt exclusively a sega thing. The entire industry was going silly (CDI and 3DO did the same). Even PC gaming was derailed for a year as FMV was shoved down the throats of the games, especially the adventure genre.
"Who shot johnny rock", night trap and so many others were multiplat games for PC, 3DO, srga Cd and sometimes CD-I.

pC CD-Rom drives entire marketing campaign was "microsoft encarta encyclopeida: It plays video clips!", 7th guest. And wing commander 3 "fearuringnreal FMV sequences staring mark hamil!"

The only good thing to come out of this dark era in gaming was Myst.
>>
My mom bought me a Sega CD and 32x bundle that some guy was selling cheap in the classified section of the newspaper and the thing actually came with Snatcher and the Justifier light gun.
I loved it and have been wanting to play it ever since, but the light gun made it feel so much cooler, and made the shooting sections actually fun instead of tedious, that I really don't want to play it without one.
(Unfortunately, I sold it to Funcoland later towards a Sega Saturn bundle... The 32x actually didn't come with a single game and despite still being "alive" at the time I never did even own one for it either. If you want to complain about one of their addon systems that's the one that was the biggest let down. Sega CD is underrated.)
>>
>>12776216
Hell yeah that's a score. I too regret selling mine. I held onto it until high school and then sold it off.
>>
>>12776164
>a small number of games were only available for rental at Blockbuster and not being sold anywhere officially. ClayFighter Sculptor's Cut, for example.
Yeah that's precisely why no physical copies of the game exist at all from that era
Wrong again, and once again you have no idea what you're talking about
>>

you've got to remember that in the late '80s and early '90s when FMV was taking off, 3D graphics looked like this.
of course FMV seemed 'better' at the time.
>>
>>12776292
Yeah Willy Beamish had the full voice acting which the DOS version didn't have. I fucking loved that game, my friend and I would sit and play it and laugh our asses off at it. I had never played a game like that and the humor was perfect for 9-10 year old kids in the 90s, slightly edgy and adult but not obscene or anything. Spider-Man vs Kingpin, that soundtrack kicked ass and the cutscenes while goofy were really cool to see at the time as we were big comic book fans, especially Spider-Man. It was a based time to be a kid.
>>
>>12775296
It's clear that you weren't there. 3 day rentals were huge at the time. I rented far more games on Genesis than I ever owned, and that was a typical experience.
Sega Channel was basically an all-you-can-play game rental section for a flat monthly fee without having to leave the house. Throw in the novelty of the whole deal and it was simply cool as fuck.
That's your history lesson for today, zoom zoom
