Jak and Daxter is one I played recently that's the worst for this. I can think of others, what about you guys? Why do you think devs do this?

>>12773257Sonic 1 is the best example of this. Even the devs admitted it

>>12773279I like the entirety of Sonic 1, even Labyrinth Zone. But there's a clear A/B divide in level design concepts.Green Hill, Spring Yard, and Starlight Zones are going fast and leaping around.Marble, Labyrinth, and Scrap Brain Zone are methodical platforming with hazards and traps.Whilst the latter is valid, it isn't as well suited to the race track level design that the series would embrace from Sonic 2 onwards.Sonic CD itself is like a soft reboot of Sonic 1, there's a lot of parallels in zone designs between the two games.
>>12773409my choice. probably the greatest example of a phenomenal first level followed by mediocrity the rest of the way
>>12773409nah the only truly awful level is the speeder one. but if you honestly thought the whole game was going to be flying levels that's your fault. it was never marketed as such.
>>12773273Shmup devs put all of their effort on marketing and it's boxart just to only serve you a bullet spam game and nothing more with TAS-tier difficulty only for you to bother to beat the 5 long levels again for the top scoreIt's the ideal troonie genre
>>12773257Off the top of my head...BLACKSILENT HILLSILENT HILL 3
>>12773360Replace Melee with Brawl and this is correct Especially Shitspace where the only fawned thing about it were the cutscenes while everything else is what Melee already done but worse.
>>12773257>Why do you think devs do this? It's easy to sell a game that makes a good first impression, and it's less work than keeping the same level of quality throughout.
>>12773409I never understood this mentality. The best level in SOTE for me has always been Gall Spaceport
>>12773257is this just a comment on quality or tone?
>>12774129It was meant to be a comment on tone but I don't mind it turning into a thread on quality lol, my fault for not being more clear.
>>12773457Agreed. Also the final level was extremely impressive back in the day. Really need to sit down and replay this one start to finish again. The speeder level can suck a dick tho.
this game baits you so hard with the first level.
>>12774354Nah the museum level was the best but even then the game is a 5/10Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2 are the absolute worst at this though. Absolutely great first level, absolutely awful rest of the game.
