>>12774364Looking for a device I can cast to my TV and play 2 player games with as well (bluetooth controllers?)I'd like to emulate up through PS2/PSP, but it will mostly be used for SNES and GBAI'd like to keep it under $300 if possiblewas thinking of getting a retroid nova, does that sound like it fits my use case?
>>12774381casting to tv is the jankiest thing in the world.>sound randomly not working>bluetooth controller randomly not working>shaders looking like absolutely shit>retroarch and standalone emulator menu buttons randomly not working>controller layout randomly changing>screen either turning off like it should or not completely randomly
Man, i hate orange handhelds.
>>12774381have you considered a hacked switch? it's generally not the best option for an emulation handheld BUT seamless plug and play with multiple controllers and docked mode is a major boon
This MF right here is awesome.
>>12774381got to agree with the other anons, casting these to TV isn't great. TV out might be a better option, some of these have mini-HDMI or USB C Display Port output. If you just want a TV gaming setup a mini pc or laptop might be better
>>12774404>>12774471>>12774516I read that the retroid pocket supports tv out on USB-C? Maybe I misspoke when I said casting to TV, i don't mind hooking it up. I have a mini pc that i use as a jellyfin server but it's in a different room, and i cast it to my tv using an Onn 4k
>KPA has no gyroWhat a blunder!>>12774381Nova is good on paper, even has 16:9 HDMI output options, but there are some first batch problems with the d-pad and retroid support supposedly claimed to have a solution in place by september. RP6 should be better with your target systems being wider, O2P also worth considering if you're staying at home. You could even get away with a RP5, provided if you find a truly good deal like the recent $140 amerifats were getting on aliexpress, not worth it otherwise.>>12774548Yeah, all these mentioned have video from USB-C.
>>12774548it does but expect a lot of fiddling around
>>12774554Aside from the dpad problems is your only reason for not recommending the nova the aspect ratio? I will probably primarily play SNES games on it natively, the PS2 games I'll probably play on the TV
TechDweeb won.
>>12774574Yeah. And the back paddles if you don't want to claw.
>>12774575techdweeb is the OP pic
Is it safe to get a thor yet and how is 3ds emulation on it
>>12774667Well, as you can see. It's a fine handheld.
>>12774678I don't care about your memes. I just want facts.
>>12774684>how is 3ds emulation on itInput lag and slight stutter whenever it has to build new shaders
>>12774693So it's shit? I only play etrian odyssey games and whatnot, I don't play any rhythm games.
>>12774485What frontend is that?
>>12774697Oh if you only play JRPGs you'll be fine but you still may get that shader building on the initial playthrough. I think later Azahar revisions may have reduced it but I don't have a Thor anymore to test
>>12774698That's either muOS's Aurora or the stock OS's theft of it.
>>12774564Fiddling around in what way?
>>12774712I see. Looks pretty clean. I'll probably stick with Rocknix out of familiarity and portmaster support though
Purple Novas aren't shipping until September, aren't they?
>>12774730see>>12774404
>>12774485It's just a 34xxsp without sticks so it's a lesser 34xxsp
I'm not afraid to say it: nothing beats the pocket with a fine grip attachment. Can play Neogeo and most of your MAME games beautifully. Docked you introduce latency, but it's fully compatible with all your 8bitdo pos.Next best are PSP2000, backlit GBA, steamdeck, anbernics rg351mp and little rg280v. However, in the end, I suggest you buy American.I'll be skipping the Nova and all these 3ds attempts. New 3ds xl pleasures me well enough.
>>12774684You missed the boat for 3ds. The new models have gimped read speeds.
>>12774821There's no need for anal-log sticks with that design.>inb4 'Rape Escape'Overrated.
>>12774454We need more orange handhelds. Especially that 70s dirty orange shade is my favorite. It has that raw, industrial but also very warm and nostalgic feel to it.
What custom firmware would you recommend for an Anbernic RG SP?
I am looking for a handheld for my kid. I have a retroid mini v2 and its been a trooper. Its the only handheld I have, and does everything I want it to. I just dont trust the kid. I got a $10 handheld from Walmart a couple years ago that is complete shit but the kid has been enjoying it so much and I want something better that I can at least control the games on.So far the 34xx ($65 shipped) is the top contender. I like the rgsp but am worried about jingle failure because this thing will be dropped and if hinged I can see that getting unfairly tweaked upon.I would pay a little more for something better or sturdier, but a protection plan is $10 for 3 years so thats where I'm at. Am I missing anything? 100% ps1 would be nice. OC pic of mini v2, not a bad game, a little mindless.
>>12775353why 34xx instead of e.g. 35xxh? 34xx is cool but very gba focused
>>12775353I would not hand a kid or anyone not neck deep into this hobby anything I wouldn't trust charging-wise completely. Yes, he will destroy it, he's a kid, that's part of life. Air X prolly?
>>12775353You really shouldn't give kids these things simply because they break so easily when dropped unlike official systems that can reach terminal velocity and slam onto concrete with only so much as a scratch to the shell. This is especially true for the lower end stuff. Honestly, spend the tiny bit extra and just get a 2DS for like $100ish and hack it. That nets you GBA and below plus DS, DSi, and 3DS and he can use the doorstop as a makeshift axe if he wanted. If you're dead set on PS1 support then anything TrimUI has will likely survive some amount of drops compared to Ambernic or Miyoo.
>>12775152I’m using BaseOS + NextUI which is nice if you want fast bootup and a simple list of games
>>12775372>I wouldn't trust charging-wise completelyChargers aren't a problem if you never get USB-C to USB-C cables or restrict these types of cables to only areas you stay at and out of reach or hand. The bigger concern would simply be the thing breaking because a kid is going to be a kid and fling it around or eventually drop it. I mean, you can look at anywhere that talks about this stuff and see how one drop on even the cheapy stuff leads to either completely broken screens, shattered cheap plastic, or the screens literally popping out because they're only using as much glue as needed to keep it there for normal usage not a violent drop.I'd also be really worried about a kid leaving these turned on on a blanket or on their bed under the sheets because you know they'll make a fire hazard a much bigger likelihood.
>>12775410Yes stupid, do you expect a kid to know or remember that? Even the act of borrowing a charger while outside is dangerous. He'll not remember it's not supposed to be left charging overnight either, like all his electronics that just work. He might even try unplugging the stupid battery himself because the readings got stuck and claude told him that's the solution.
>>12775353ironically the hinge is the one thing you don't have to worry about with the rgsp, techdweeb took a sledgehammer to his and the only thing that survived WAS the hinge
>>12775410>>12775414i really don't get where this mythos of anbernic devices having charging issues when all the documented cases have been of retroid and miyoo devices
>>12775420I hate linking to Reddit but there's an entire breakdown of the RG35XX Plus, then later the RG34XX-SP and RG35XX-SP, of these being major issues with all Anbernic devices at least up to the 34SP's release.https://www.reddit.com/r/ANBERNIC/comments/1f1iun2/an_explanation_of_the_usb_c_charging_issues_on/https://www.reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/comments/1kxz7qj/updatesolved_rg34xxsp_and_rg35xxsp_usbc_charging/The issue is that, and I quote, "mistakenly detecting that some USB C chargers are an external device (like a USB gamepad) that needs power, and trying to apply 5V to the charger itself. This can result in either or both the RG35XX Plus and the charger to heat up - sometimes just a bit, sometimes enough to damage components or the nearby battery.". The second guy noticed it still happens in both the 34 and 35 SPs and that some cheaper or lower-end USB-C to C cables can cause this issue leading to potential house fires. There's even mod tutorials on how to fix this issue on the RG35XX-H.https://www.wirehead.be/2024/10/21/anbernic-rg35xx-h-charge-mod/
>>12775442>no actual cases, just hearsay and fluffwhy did you even bother posting when literally every exploded device from the website you're using as a source has been a retroid or a miyoo?
>>12775446Because these people have broken down the actual board problems and electrical issues to prove their point. "Hearsay" in this instance is backed up by proof that it is dangerous.
>>12775420Yeah, let's just pretend dozens of 35xxSPs didn't explode on launch.
purple nova bros...why did they skip us on the shipping...are we doomed bros...
So what's the verdict on the Nova then? Did anons even get theirs?
>>12775557People thought they wanted it, but they didn't.
>>12774485Love mine. it's exactly what I wanted. I've been playing the shit out of fire emblem romhacks on it.has anyone done a good emulation station port yet with proper sleep mode yet?>>12774821the buttons are better.>>12775362I wanted it for gba. Gba games are the best designed games of all time to play on a small screen in small bursts. I pay mine on my lunch break since I don't eat lunch.

i was going to boughted a trimui brick pro.stared at the checkout page for like 5 minutes and realized that boughteding yet another handheld will not fill the void in my soul.i did buy some heat shrink tubing and a shitty chink heat gun for $10 dollars though
>>12774824Isnt the timing on the GBA core still fucked after all these years?Literally less accurate than a cheap chinkheld running an emulator iirc
>tfw no hhg hag
The RG SP has brought back the fun for me. I thought I would like Thor but it's too heavy and clunky. On the SPA you just flip it open and get into the game with no BS like android and jamesdsp breaking. Very light in the hands
>>12775362I tried to narrow down my results with retrocatalog. I was avoiding sticks (maybe 1?), trying to stay under $100 out the door, screen around 3.5" or bigger, not horrible resolution, squareish (not 16:9 because no consoles we would play have wide-screen), Linux preferred. Less important is form factor. The V2 is almost 4" and its the bare minimum for me for TV consoles but I see that's a tall ask for this price range.>>12775456Do you know if the rgsp is charge safe? We have some c to c chargers around and friends so its probably more important to me that it wont blow up. The 2ds is a convincing option all things considered, but not a fan of ds generally and the stylus will get instalost. The main reason I settled on the 34xx is it seemed the simplest and hopefully has some robustness like my old GB (lost many moons ago), but would do the rgsp if someone who knows better says it won't blow up.I'm open to other options, I'm not sold on any brand but all my results are anbernics. My kid isn't a spaz, we take care of our things, but getting dropped on the floor or sat on is a real possibility.
>>12776032No one's really done a test since the RG SP is so new, but the RG34XX would also have this issue since that was before the RG34XX-SP. If you don't trust your kid with the charging situation just keep that in mind. The RG34XX also requires you to open it up and put some tape under the d-pad pivot or it'll false diagonal like crazy which might make your kid annoyed since it's really annoying. Amazing GBA upgrade once you do fix it though.>not 16:9 because no consoles we would play have wide-screenYou're sort of limiting yourself just to not have black bars. Like the other guy said you could go the Mangmi Air since the ghosting wouldn't bother the kid and it's $100. You could go the TrimUI Smart Pro for $85ish or the non-Pro version for like $20 cheaper but in the non-Pro version's case I feel like that legitimately would break if it fell once. You could also look into MagicX's product line since they're apparently fairly sturdy.>but not a fan of ds generally and the stylus will get instalost. You not being a fan of the DS doesn't mean the kid won't like it. Don't let your distaste for something prevent the kid from seeing if he likes it. You'd just look up a recommended list and load it up and let him be on his way.I wouldn't worry too much about the stylus. They're dirt cheap to get in bulk and unless your kid is like 8 or lower they'll likely be able to keep that in check once they realize where it goes and how necessary it is compared to their finger. If you're willing to go a bit past $100 to around the $140 range then the Switch Lite is legitimately something that could be run over by a tank and still work, would grant you way more emulation options, and gives you the Switch to work with. You'd also be able to parental lock it if you don't want them doing certain things and since you'd be hacking it you wouldn't have to worry about the kid going online with it or anything since you'd just make it impossible for them to do so.
>>12774824less obvious anal shill.
>>12774824For less than half the cost you can get a retroid pocket classic and a little extender grip
>>12774693is there a chance chinkhelds will ever use a resistive screen? do they even exist anymore? honestly the only reason i havent gotten a thor
ASURION 3 Year Toy Accident Protection Plan $9.99 (drops, spills and cracked screens due to normal use)RG34XX (32GB SD) $65.99Hard Travel Case $15.99Mr.Shield 3Pack Tempered Glass Screen Protector $9.95$101.92 out the door. I can put the charger in the case, also now that I look we use all apple 5v/1a wall worts A to C for our little charger shelf so we should be good (mostly also wife proof). The same idea with the rgsp is ~$130.The Nintendo options all pan out to around $200. I hate to go cheap but this is just a step up from whatever pic rel is, I can't see going more expensive. All being said I have time to scout CL or whatever for a Nintendo console because I hear you on the durability. Nothing against hard mods and everdrive carts but I'd rather not unless the price was right. If $100 lasts 3 years, I can be happy with that. Part of me feels cheap for even making these posts but if I'm spending more than $100 he's getting a different gift, like Lego's or some other garbage.
>>12776274I don't even know what the last handheld that used a resistive screen was outside of the N3DS. Even then I think the Thor has other issues, like the ergos suffering compared to the Flip 2 due to the 3DS styled layout.
Has anyone managed to fix the rg 40xx battery getting so warm?
>>12776128there's no "False diagonals" on the rg sp,
>>12776274They used resistive screens before. Jxd, Supbor, and Pre anbernic anbernic all used resistive screens when they used touch screens in the past. The ones from supbor were even linux. As for your question, maybe gameconsole?
>>12775470i'll just let you keep pretending as if that happened

>>12774846The storage speed downgrade means basically nothing for gaming, UFS 3.1 is still drastically faster than micro-SD on read/write. It only really means anything for if you are copying a bunch of files over to it that you might have to wait a bit longer
>>12776452I didn't say there was, I said there was on the RG34XX. It's genuinely terrible unless you use the tape mod. Any slight movement suddenly becomes a diagonal.
>>12775071ask me how I know you're over 40
>>12774485>>12775562How does it feel in your hands? I have an rg35xx plus and it's small for me. I'm thinking of going for the sp or the horizontal 34.
>>12776357That's a solid gift pac, but the included sd cards kinda suck. Get a SanDisk for $20I'd never bother with warranty. And maybe don't bother with a charger if money is tight, people always have a spare charger somewhere

>>12777306To me, it feels really good due to the matte finish and being easily able to readjust your hands around the lower half. I like the dpad more than the 34XX's too
