>>12774891It was the era when they started getting used to 3D, stuff started looking generally pretty good but still without breaking crazy budgets and needing 100000 team members to make the game (System Shock 2, only one to have this data, a budget of 1.7m and 18 months to make) while still being cutting edge, so things could still be inventive and experimental a bit
I fucking LOVE these kinds of models and faces. It is peak video games for me.
>>12775047>stuff started looking generally pretty goodYeah I still enjoy how it looks. I didn't really like how a lot of games started to look around the mid 2000s. There were some improvements with things like physics and face animations, but it was also becoming more common for visual clarity to go down, not to mention things like awful bloom forced into everything, too many cutscenes, etc. Gameplay also seemed to start getting simplified to where it could become less interesting. Even with indie games trying to ape this style they seem to only focus on things like texture resolution and poly count but still end up often being bloated and cluttered with visual noise and not looking very good.
>>12774891>no gothic
>>12774970>>12775003Sin was shit and so was red faction
>>12774891Most details (faces and hairs included) are done through textures mostly - thus allowing for more variations and stylistic choices without a lot of tedious work, without caring about global lightning affecting shadows of character's left nostril - shadows are drawn.More than than - low polygonal models automatically bring in a lot of straight lines and non-curved angles, which partially forces, partially suggests, that design of everything else should also be sharp and either lean or blocky - which suggests either grace or brute power, in some combinations - both simultaneously. And all that sharpness had further suggested high contrast through deeper colors. With more rounding came more variations, but also less clarity. And then "realistic colorless" had arrived, where forms serve not the artistic expression, but mindless replication of reality - today not the intention behind matters for modern "creators" (read - UI/UX designers, not artists) but only how it does not differ from mundane.
>>12775513>With more rounding came more variations, but also less clarity.

>>12775047>>12775196the defining characteristic of earlier 3D games is that their textures had painted on shading, while newer games (mid-00's and later) started relying heavily on shaders and material effects on every surfacealso late 90's/very early 00's 3D graphics hit that sweet spot between model polygon count and texture resolution

>>12775671nigger have you ever watched a movie?
>>12775671That was mostly just for the intro. Other games would simply use an actual cutscene. I suppose an argument could be made that not having a way to skip those sections in HL ends up feeling worse on a replay. But 99% of HL is action gameplay. HL2 did go a bit overboard and especially the episodes having too much of it though.

>>12775952>shilling a game that is almost 30 years oldthe game itself is okay but i think the huge amount of mods is really what people loved

From the no fun gameplay to the fact that the game gets more and more shit as it progresses. It is actually a challenge to finish that shit game simply because people get sick of the bullshit insta death crap that the game throws on later levels. >Did you quit HL when the ninjas show up? OR when the military shows up? The game is deeply flawed like its le silent protagonist is retardation that is not fun. The game locking you into forced cut scenes you can not skip is another one.It is OK if the protagonist has no in game voice if the player selects the dialogue from a menu (no need to say that line). HL is very very strange and not that fun. Like it is surprising people like that game and did not forget it alongside other trash like nitro family. >>12775978>from 1998?I did see them on YT if you want to exclude that you get them on places like /vr/ so they exist and you engage with them.

It does also not help that HL shills and fanboys are not engaging with facts>Muh cymatics in HL are so goodCountered with:No that is a bad thing I did not like gating locked into a unskipable cut scenesAnd it is like their heads go BSOD.Because this is all they know to say.

i feel like everyone who hates Half Life 1 never played it until after they started shitposting on 4chan.If you go into the game without expectations its a good game, if you go in having heard its a cult classic and 9/10, you might be disappointed that its not the instant dopamine hit that you live on now

>>12776529I'll be honest with you, anon. Half-Life 1 is great, Half-Life 2 is shit, and I don't want another sequel. This is why mainstream is the devil. You get a swarm of retards who worship the game, which then fosters a swarm of retards who make it their life's mission to hate on it at every opportunity.
>>12775695>I suppose an argument could be made that not having a way to skip those sections in HL ends up feeling worse on a replay. The most egregious is the intro, but thankfully console commands let you replay the game at a better point. It's otherwise like you said with 99% of it being gameplay, if you want it to be. The cutscenes are rarely 'forced' on you like they often are in HL2: At that point it was decided that Gordon was a 'hero' and less like someone who just lucked out with a cool suit during the Black Mesa incident.
>>12775196>>12775634When graphics were a bit worse your imagination would kick in and take over. MGS's facial animations and expressions were super basic, almost vestigial, but they worked well. Your brain filled in the gaps. When there are no real gaps, all you see is what will soon be outdated graphics.
>>12776826>At that point it was decided that Gordon was a 'hero'The episodes were even worse because you constantly have a companion who sits by cheering and telling you how smart you are almost every time you do anything. I don't know if it was supposed to be sarcasm but it got annoying.
>>12775513Might be a bit arty for /vr/ but this is some good blablabla. Vagueness as an artistic choice was tied to the medium for a long time, a player's avatar stood for something that they would partly imagine because that's how the graphics were. Total realism reduces the artist to a mere 3D copying machine.

>>12774891I just can't agree>Half-LifeThe shooting is just ass. Enemies are spongey, barely react to getting hit, their weapons aren't interesting to fight against, and their as dumb as a sack of bricks. I can only assume people's memories of the SP get mixed with those of the MP, where these issues are negligible and the movement is able to shine>Deus ExFeigns consequences for your choices, immediately starts to drop off in such a regard, especially and disappointingly so for dialogue. Level design is smart but also incredibly basic when you get to it. None of it is particularly complex, but rather well laid out A/B choices that do well to connect later via hidden routes. Aug system is absolute buns. Not bad, probably the one most worth replaying, but also has been surpassed>MorrowindThis game is just straight fucking ass. So many of the quests just boil down to either fetch quests or "go here and either spam persuade to ask the guy to leave or provoke him into attacking you." Combat is just objectively awful as well. It'd be fine in an ARPG or CRPG where attacks are automated or turn based, but instead it's some halfway abortion that wants you to do all the manual clicking and actively participate in combat but doing so barely matters other than running away to be behind something. Then holy fuck it takes so long for it not to be slow as balls to get around. I would've killed myself if I had to walk around Vivec on period-accurate hardware. Not to mention: for the game that everyone sucks off for encouraging the player to ask for directions, so few NPCs will actually offer them when telling you to go somewhere, which is especially egregious because "dialogue" with them is just glorified info kiosks>System Shock 2 Haven't played, lol
