Why did we stop using CRTs? Dreamcast running on a VGA CRT monitor still looks unbelievably good.
>>12775136we didn't
Who is "we"?
>>12775136because consumers got obsessed with making televisions huge and making a CRT huge is like making a giant heavy boulder that requires 2-3 people just to move. A lot of CRT hobbyists these days stick with around 20 inch and below CRTs purely because those are manageable to lift by a single person.
>>12775150I dont even have room for a proper 20 CRT inch setup so I ended getting a pulsar monitor when upgrading my PC display. It has caveats but it's nice that crt-like motion clarity can be achieved on flat panels, I dont think I could go back.
>>12775136I'd still use it, but the only person which I know of that can fix them requires a consistent patreon donations to get in line for work to be considered.
>Why did we stop using CRTs?Why do people pretend to have collective amnesia?
>>12775139>>12775149This. There hasn't been a day in my life I didn't have a CRT hooked up at home.
>>12775136It looks worse than LCD, weigh 10x more, and the picture is deformed
>>12775136A lot of people can't really find the space to have a big ass crt in their house on top of whatever normal modern displays they're running, the practical option is just having one media center and adapting your retro games to fit that either through an all in one emulation solution like the mister, or a scaler.
>>12775525I emulate on a real CRT TV tho. Best of both worlds.
>>12775504Based>>12775449Move on
>>12775534this is a retro gaming board
Big Screen TV's killed CRTs. Yes, you can argue that retailers preferred being able to ship 4 TVs in the space 1 CRT would take up, but the demand from customers came from the size of the screens. With CRT's a 27inch screen was considered big, and 32 inch was really big, and everything beyond that was sky-high prices for the extreme big screens. Most everyone I knew who upgraded off of their CRT went with 42inch or larger screens.Big screen flatscreen TV's with simple setup is the reason they took over the market so quickly. Everyone was eager to upgrade when screens that size were previously reserved for the wealthy.
>>12775790This is relevant to /vr/, how? Nobody in their right mind plays NES over composite on a big screen LCD.
>>12775136Older games look better on crt, newer games look better on hdmi. All movies look better on crt though.
>>12775797Most people emulate now so no composite or RF cables needed. How are screens relevant to /vr/?"Oh back in my day it was art and so beautiful, you youngns don't know."From the late-80s so obviously it's all we had until ~04 iirc. I hated CRTs and was glad to see them go. The screech noise, I could hear it 2 rooms over as a kid, drove me nuts. They made my eyes water and hurt after like an hour. Sure they look cool (sometimes) but it's still the same game on an LCD. I just load up an emulator, set the right aspect ratio, and run games with no filter or adjustment and somehow, retro games are played.
>>12776013too sharp
Efficiency and people not wanting their new TV to weigh over a fucking ton for a big screen
>>12776021I know and I'm using composite. Miss my older, cheaper CRT
>>12775136Zoomers.
>>12775136it's shocking how good DOA2 still looks
