What's the verdict on Age of Empires and Ensemble?

The early game mechanics do hurt the experience but I liked the variety of scenarios for each SP campaign; the Babylonian campaign alone will put hairs on your chest with how hard it can get, the Yamato as well has some difficulty spikes and the Rise of Rome expansion has many battle pieces.
My dad loved Age of Empires
The first three age of empires games are timeless classics.Age of mythology was underwhelming.They should have offered better mod support so people could make their own civs.
