Instead of the usual "epic final battle" music, what are some examples of strange pieces used for the game's climax?
Bonus points: it actually works.

I'll start with the Dragon Lord theme from the original Dragon Quest:

The melody is in a minor scale but harmonized with major thirds, the seven-bar phrasing also gives it an unsettling feel.
Sugiyama went full avant garde on this one

Not the final boss theme, but Death Egg Zone in Sonic 2 is strange sounding and creepy af

Strange too because the level is so short that you only hear most of the music if you wasted time dicking around in the hallway before the bosses.

I always found it odd how they added a Japanese drum at the start of the theme in the IX remix for what it is a pretty European looking dragon design

It doesn't count in the Super Famicom version but I Miss You in the PSX version of Tales of Phantasia might be the first "sad" final boss theme ever. Sakaruba later revisited the idea with the final boss theme in Dark Souls.

Dracula's theme in Castlevania IV is so eerie.

I still have no idea what the sound guys were smoking with this one.

Less a "final boss" than an "victory lap boss" but the melancholy music really hammers home the fact that you are basically beating a wild animal to death

It reminds me of this piece from Peter Gabriel's Passion

Listen at the part from around 0:35 and you'll understand

I like that Earthbound's final boss theme after the first 50 seconds is a thrash metal song when most of the OST up to that point is more 60s rock inspired.

Do we know who is the actual composer of Porky Means Business?
The 60s rock makes sense because most of the soundtrack was done by the guy from Moonriders, but yeah I'd be surprised if it was him who did that Porky theme. I'm guessing probably was Tanaka but even still for him it's an unusual style

>>12777210
I believe Tanaka did it and mentioned he was inspired by Nirvana

>>12777212
Ah cool, Tanaka is underrated

I remember finding this video a while back and it went into some cool details about the OST

King's Field 4 has a fairly unique soundtrack in general.

Pretty melacholic for a final boss but I guess it fits given the context.

How'd they get such nice sounding music on such an old console?
