Theoretically and literally the more years pass and the more technology advances the better SEGA Genesis music sounds (purely technical reasons behind FM synthesis and not bait)
Yeah, the YM2612 was a great sound chip. It gets a bad rap for western devs using the GEMS sound driver, which could sound good, but most devs just didn't put in the effort.
>>12777142sun spots
>>12777148There is nothing wrong with GEMS. The terrible reputation is a retcon caused by poor emulation and lossy audio compression. It just so happens, incidentally, that the default patches that shipped with GEMS sound terrible on emulator, especially so after being stuffed through lossy audio compression. GEMS games sound find on real hardware.
Kek, I was wondering if he'd show up
>>12777197I was about to say, the GEMS games on my actual Genesis sound pretty much identical to games running on Kega Fusion. Thank you for saving me a reply to a fucking schizo retard.
I mainly know Genesis music from original hardware, which made it sound unpleasantly strident. It's very very good sound hardware compared to, I don't know, whatever's behind "PC speaker" sound, but a bit bad compared to some other options that existed at the time.I don't know what OP is talking about. Probably something irrelevant I guess? Anyway I've heard some original stuff made for this chip, as well as some examples of what some anons claim it ought to sound like in the hands of competent composers and programmers, and they always sound at least a little bit irritating to me because of the limitations of the chip. Yeah you can make very beautiful music with an annoyance machine but it's usually better to do it with some other device...
>>12777287SNES uses samples and Genesis synthesis so emulators can theoretically increase resolution infinitely but your 1990s pre recorded and compressed samples will never have higher quality no matter what you do.
>>12777142>>12777148>>12777170>>12777287It's not a bad sound chip per-se, but the internal DA converter is fucking ass. Sounding like fart isn't really GEMS' fault. Internal DAC saves a lot of costs but sounds like shit.
genesis chiptunes were always superior to snes low quality midis
>>12777329doesn't stop people from trying with snes track restorations using the original samples.
>>12777353Depends on who's writing the music.>Tim FollinSNES wins.>Jesper Kydd Genesis wins.
>>12777361we're talking about sound quality, not composition
>>12777360>restorationsYou inevitably make up data that wasn't there
>>12777368Yes, Tim Follin is able to manipulate SNES echo delay buffer and white noise to squeeze out full sounding samples from such a tiny amount of memory. A good musician can push the sound quality beyond what others are typically capable of.
>>12777348It doesn't sound like farts on the real hardware. Or at least it not meant to. Due to lossy compression induced neurological changes, the fart sounds caused by lossy audio compression effect your perception of the real hardware ruining genesis music forever.
>>12777372sort of? it's not ai. it's doing the detective legwork and finding which cd the composers in the 90s got their samples from, and then recreating the song using those cd quality samples. it's akin to a mario 64 texture mod that uses the original high resolution stock images from which the in-game textures were made. you could say that that data wasn't there, but that's true of everything that isn't a bit for bit copy of the original. it does end up sounding different because compressing the samples for the snes changes their timbre. and the audio mixing isn't always exact.
