Hello everyone, I’ve wanted to start this thread for a long time. Yesterday, I finished *MGS3*, and I stopped playing *MGS4* just because I decided to follow the game's canonical timeline; now I’m moving on to *Peace Walker*. But the question is: are these titles actually that good? I mean, I don't doubt they had intense storytelling for their time, but what makes this one of the top video game franchises in the world? Personally, I’ve been gaming for about 25 years—I started with the PlayStation 1, 2, and Dreamcast, and I also played a lot of NES. Back then, though, I was really into *Dino Crisis* and *Sonic Adventure*, then later on PC: *Call of Duty 2*, *Half-Life*, and *Medal of Honor: Allied Assault*. As I got older, I played *GTA III*, *Vice City*, and *San Andreas*—titles that blew me away. So why didn't I play these games back then? If I had, would I have understood the hype a lot better? I speak Spanish, and I'm using a translator. I hope this thread helps us share a bit of our nostalgia as gamers.
the first half of your post has nothing to do with the second half of your post
Sorry
>>12780093As someone who was the perfect age when these games came out, some of it has a: you had to be there kind of thing to really appreciate the hype. MGS1 was a crazy, insane mix of storytelling and gameplay which pushed the console to its limits. The sequel was even more of a story mind fuck for its time and the demo alone had so much to offer I remember playing it and being hyped up along w a ton of other gamers. Not only were we getting a sequel to a top tier game but you could do things in the demo like shoot individual ice cubes, and could fuck around w the enemy ai in interesting and fun ways. The actual 2nd game comes out and while I personally didn’t mind it, the story shifts focus about 25 percent of the way through to a brand new protagonist and this was a rug pull a lot of people hated but the game itself was still extremely fun. It earned its cult like status (even tho it was extremely popular at the time selling millions of copies between the original release and the supped up version Substance) by accurately predicting the future w its end plot points. Whether by total accident or not (Kojima was given unprecedented access w the military apparently and maybe was just privy to a lot of things the general public wasn’t) it still accurately predicts the future and so people go back to it and a person built a whole cult of personality around the first two games. Then the wheels started falling off w the 3rd game which some people love but doesn’t really advance the story or have anything to say about current or future events because it’s set so far in the past. Also the “advancement” in gameplay centered around hunting eating and camo snd the game is a huge pain in the ass unless u play the subsistenance version or whatever it’s called. Then mgs4 completely jumps the shark. No one wanted a meta winking game where the protag is now for some dumb reason old as fuck and abandons some story threads like Meryl from MGS1 pissing people off.
>>12780119In the end, I’m just bitter we never got a true follow up to mgs2. The game ends on a cliffhanger w Snake diving into the ocean going after liquid snake controlling ocelot. There’s a lot Kojima could’ve done if he had immediately followed it up w a game and story on par w 2 instead he wanted to make a James Bond knock off 60 styles game which adds a lot of back story to characters we weren’t invested in or really needed to know about. Ocelot is demystified, big boss origin story is really stupid since he isn’t even a part of the solid storyline and is from the nes era games. It’s one of the worst follow ups in terms of gameplay and story in gaming ever. Never been so disappointed in a gaming series and how badly it fell off.
Great response. But all that's left for me to do is play and appreciate them during this time. :|
>>12780093>Yesterday, I finished *MGS3*, and I stopped playing *MGS4* just because I decided to follow the game's canonical timeline; now I’m moving on to *Peace Walker*.This is a bad idea. The games all work better mechanically and thematically if you play in release order. Both Peace Walker and MGSV were made to explain some of what is discussed in MGS4 (Big Boss's actions before the events of MG1 and 2), and MGSV also contains spoilers for MGS4.>But the question is: are these titles actually that good? I mean, I don't doubt they had intense storytelling for their time, but what makes this one of the top video game franchises in the world? It's a combination of a lot of things. Very out there stories, a super distinct style between all of the games, memorable characters, a lot of silly bits in between that were the product of an eccentric director, fun gameplay, and top-notch cutscene and soundtrack direction. I'd say the one thing that makes them stand out the most to me is how personal most of the titles feel, they're some of the most auteur/director driven games out there and they wouldn't be the same without someone like Kojima at the helm, even if a lot of the people on his team like Fukushima, Norihiko Hibino and Hiroaki Yoshiike could use more credit. But MGSV kinda tried this by having the full credits for each mission play at the beginning so you know everyone's involvement in each mission's development.
I grew up with MGS. Got it for Xmas 1998 when I was 10 and was obsessed with it. We make fun of movie games now but at the time it was next level. And the gameplay was really fun as well. It had mature themes and had a touch of realism (real world, weapons, conflicts, countries, etc.) Mgs2 released early in the ps2's life and was even better than the hype surrounding it. Its still my favorite game in the series and put hundreds of hours into it. It runs really good and expands on everything from the first game. Mgs3 is where it really started going downhill for me. That game just never clicked and im still not a big fan of the gameplay to this day. The story is good tho. Mgs4 I think I rented it when it released and didnt like it at all and never finished it
>>12780093>are these titles actually that good?Yes, they are.The "MGSV" does not exist. Ground Zeroes makes a-OK finale to Peace Walker though.I've been playing games since the late-1980sThe MGS games were a literal pillars of the gaming industry. People waited for the next installment like the next full solar eclipse; they marked the beginning of a new era whenever they happened, just like a brand new Final Fantasy would. MGS1-4 + PW are still pure 10/10 masterpieces that I revisit from time to time.>As I got older, I played *GTA III*, *Vice City*, and *San Andreas*—titles that blew me awayOkay, so you're one of those "Dudebro" faggots. GTA has ALWAYS sucked ass.>So why didn't I play these games back then? I don't know. Why did you not?>If I had, would I have understood the hype a lot better?Quite likely. But I have seen countless people half my age, pick up and play the series for the very first time the past couple years alone, and love the fuck out of them.MGS is a rare video game SAGA, with some truly memorable characters and stories. The audio-visual work is always top-notch, and the writing, voice acting and level of interactivity in the gameworld are still nothing short of spectacular. The attention to details is insane, and especially these days it is very refreshing to play a game that not only does not patronize the players, but also demands them to slow down, think and experiment with things. And like people said earlier, play the games in release order.Which you SEEM to be doing, but your "canonical timeline" statement is a bit confusing.>translatorOkay, that explains it.
>>12780093>what makes this one of the top video game franchises in the world? There practically was NO stealth genre nor demand for one before MGS1 popularized sneaking around. And few games provide such level of freedom and interactivity as the MGS. The stories in games are often kinda secondary, but in MGS it's a very crucial part of the experience. You literally live and grow old with these characters, in a one, huge tale that spans decades, both in the game's universe and in the real world. And the way the games recognize common player behavior and input as a canonical part of the saga is just so wholesome.I bet it's hard to fathom why a game like MGS1 would be such a hot topic for the time being. But let me assure you: 1998 was THE peak of video games, and the way MGS elevated the cinematography, voice acting and overall "mature themes" of the industry cannot be ignored.Just try playing something generic from a year or two prior, and you'll soon realize how high quality and ambitious the game was.Hell, even the original Resident Evil, which arguably was the previous big "cinematic game", does not posses the same level of film-like elements (nor voice acting for that matter) as Kojima's first 3D title. The only part of the "experience" you're really missing this day and age is having to wait multiple years between each new MGS installment. Yes, 2-3 years was "a lot of time" back in the Y2K days!
Thanks, that’s perfectly clear to me. I also agree—in my opinion, the third one is great! One more thing: what do you think about remakes like the one from last year? Do they capture the same intensity as the games from the 90s and 2000s? And finally, what are you playing right now? Any similar titles?
what the fuck is up with this thread
>>12780424Mgs4 isn’t a masterpiece and never was. It was highly contentious on release and has only gotten worse w age as the nostalgia of getting a direct sequel to 2 wore off. The game is absolute garbage and is so bad that it knew it had to pull modern Hollywood cliches and go digging into the original shadow Moses island for it to even have a “memorable” part of the game for people to talk about even though it makes zero sense in game for them to go there and then for the metal gear u destroyed to not only work miraculously but use it to complete whatever idiotic mission u were on. Mgs4 is a blight on the series and has only gotten worse the longer its been around and been allowed to breathe free from being told its great cuz Kojima.
>>12780450>Mgs4 isn’t a masterpiece and never was. It was highly contentious on releaselol no it was not.MGS4 is the ultimate pleb-tourist filter, as its release coincided with the release of iPhone, Twitter and Facebook, thus attracting normalfags who knew nothing about vidya on the net. And onto 4chan.They then took the loving JOKES about the game with face-value, and started parroting them as "facts".Also I pity any and all nu-fags who missed the /v/'s MGO2 servers.
>>12780093>Yesterday, I finished *MGS3*, and I stopped playing *MGS4* just because I decided to follow the game's canonical timeline; now I’m moving on to *Peace Walker*Must have been wild in 2008 when MGS4 came out and everybody collectively agreed to not play it for 7 years because MGS5 wasn't out yet
Good points. Luckily, these days we can decide which title to play first without having to wait years—or simply choose not to play any of them. But hey, that's fair enough, guys!
>>12780093Peace Walker is fucking abysmal MGSV is the best game in the series
Too soon for the thread to die, don't you think?
>>12780093peacewalker is weirdits also awesome nor is it /vr/alsoplaying this series in in-game chronological order is absolutely pointless. in fact if you played them in the ordinary irl release order youd probably both enjoy it more, and also understand a lot more about whats going on. kojimbo was kinda flying by the seat of his pants for a solid half of the series
>>12780093>I decided to follow the game's canonical timelineThat's pointless. Just do relase order. Finish MGS4 first, then play the Big Boss games, because MGS4 is the final games in the series and the Big Boss games are mostly a self-contained timeline and you don't need to play them to understand MGS4. Also they might make Solid Snake games more confusing because they soft-retcon certain things.
>>12780424Metal Gear Solid V is a very good game, just unfinished and not like older MGS titles. It's plot is kinda pointless and contradicts other games, buy it's worth playing for the fun open world gameplay. Just treat is as an unoffical sequel to Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.
>>12780119>accurately predicting the futureIt didn't predict anything, it commented on things that were currently happening at the time. This seems to confuse people who were young when they first encountered the game because they had no experience in those areas. They had never thought to examine those aspects of life in that way, so it seemed a prediction whereas to others who had seen these things happening, it was merely commentary on something they already knew.
Did a MGS1 blind run easily, struggling way more on MGS2 though. Don't know if its just a part of me wanting to skip to MGS3 or I'm getting hard filtered by the oil tanker
>>12781194peace walker/MGSV actually is literally just happening rn in the sahel and central african republicafter wagner failed to coup the russian govt, their leader was killed, and the remaining forces were banished to africa. as the war in ukraine has dragged on, russia has lost a lot of its ability and desire to keep wagner/africa corp properly supplied. as a result theyve had to majorly branch out into other "activities". primarily selling bootleg indian tramadol to the locals. but also stealing gold mines, when possible.their main bread and butter tho, has been security. most of their work has been to fight against foreign-funded jihadis who are there attempting approximately the same scam, just from the haji perspective. when malis govt got flipped by a russian-backed coup, they kicked the french out. as a result wagner filled the void, operating as a de facto executive branch of the fledgling govt. they were preferred over the french due to being a lot more "hands on" and unafraid of laying their lives on the line for their contracts. and then they got, frankly, btfo and displaced into the CAR, where theyve since settled into a similar role as before. literally militaires sans frontieresi could go on or quite a while, even into a tangent on MGS2 for a while, but you get the picturebut its not like kojimbo is some fucking oracle or whatever. mercs going rogue and becoming a stateless army is something thats been discussed since the rise of modern mercs in 60s/70s
By the way, I'm starting the mission briefing today!!!
MGS4 retconned the ending where Snake and Meryil live a comfy life together in Alaska at the end of MGS1, instead marrying her to some nobody who shits his pants ingame in the literal sense.Fuck MGS4. Glad it'll never be retro.
>>12780093The original movie-games. The first MGS is the only one worth playing, and you have to put yourself in the mindset of a '90s console kiddie who was still getting over the 16-bit sidescrolling era and was getting used to simple 3D arcade style games like Twisted Metal. MGS with its "cinematic storytelling" was like a sucker punch to the balls, and because the cinemas were so long it felt deep to a developing retard's brain.
>>12780448It's weird because some dude with autotranslate is acting strange but anons are still friendly to him instead of calling him a faggot like usual.I like that.>>12782041Have fun, fren.
>>12782245I experienced plenty of cinematic storytelling before MGS.
I think I'm in the final part or something similar; Liquid took off in a massive submarine and left Raiden nearly dead. Unfortunately, in the next section, a CD icon and a question mark appear, and the screen won't load. I'm the thread creator, and I'm hoping to fix this and finish the game today.
>>12780093Yesssssss. I was looking for this thread. It's still not out on any pirate sites. Any of you niggas got it yet?
I'm working on that right now.
>>12783746Nice TV stand, Pablo
HahahahaGreetings from South America. Can you guess the country? And getting back to the topic, I didn't think the thread would last more than a day.
always play in release order. no exceptions
mgs1-3 has a lot of worldbuilding and sci-fi concepts and snake is interesting
>>12780125the series needed fresh air, mgs3 was inevitable. mgs2 is already game 4.
>>12783761>I didn't think the thread would last more than a day.Meh, this board is slow as fuck. Chances are high that a thread manages to survive a day even if no one is answering.>Can you guess the country?Brazil?
Brasil no jajajajHow do I defeat Screaming Mantis?
Do any of the games in the collections lose anything from their original releases? I've never played one and I know about stuff like turning the console off during one of the boss fights, and something about why 4 was apparently impossible to get off the PS3. I want to get into the series but I want it to be the way they were intended to be.
I finished MGS 4, and MGS 3 earlier in the week. What a great series—thanks for all your comments.
>>12784630they lose nothing
>>12782059Agreed. That was such a shit way to treat snake and Meryl. Also the turn that the arm wasn’t controlling ocelot was dumb. I mean, we’re in a world w vampires and all kinds of crazy ass shit. To make that some sort of weird psychological conditioning was really stupid.
>>12782059the first two episodes of 4 are fun to play at leastit goes downhill FAST after that tho
>>12784630>I've never played one and I know about stuffno. you dont. youve watched a youtube video and are now parroting back what you thought you heard. which is wrong btwthe games are obviously exactly the same as when they came out. just play them.if youre too scared to just play a PS1 game for yourself, i have a hard time understanding why you would even be on this board
>>12786928kek faggot
>>12784030>pic
>>12780815>It's plot is kinda pointless and contradicts other gamesIt really is. Peace Walker is already close to a perfect tie-in to Metal Gear 1, with Big Boss renaming Mother Base to Outer Heaven and having a Metal Gear prototype at the end. The AI stuff is a bit of an early stretch but whatever, it sets the stage for the events of 2 and the only space left to connect it with MG1 would have been to show Big Boss forming Foxhound but that's easily handwaved.Instead we got a game that goes "oh, uh, actually we're just going to sweep the board clean again and do it all again lol" for no real reason other that Kojima needed to have some contrived reason for their being a clone of Big Boss instead of just the original story where he survives Outer Heaven and goes on to form Zanzibar Land. The gameplay's pretty great and it gives us Babby Liquid and Mantis even if it does literally nothing with them but other than that all the shit with vocal parasites and metallic archaea and Sahelanthropus and Skull Face and the Man on Fire is completely irrelevant to the rest of the series' plot.
