As a kid I didn't, because I played 10% English translated ROM leaked 1 year before the game's release, quit at the Unkown part; and didn't look back at it again until 10-15 years later when it became acceptable again to play Pokémon.

I do remember my go to for roaming being false swiping and sleeping it then just chasing after it with quick balls, but those weren’t a thing in Gen 2 so I can’t remember if my strategy was that refined back then.I just remember I ran into and caught a shiny rattata in the process
