>THPS1: 7/10A really good game and there's something to love about playing Tony Hawk without trickmashing autism. Here you have to actually FIND good lines. The Downtown and Streets levels are too big though; game would be 8/10 without them. Soundtrack is middling but Superman is a standout.>THPS2: 9/10Fuck yeah. I don't need to explain this one.>THPS3: 7.5/10A lot of the level design is pretty repetitive in this one, and Suburbia is the worst map thus far. Soundtrack is a huge step down from 2, though there are some standouts.>THPS4: 5/10Level design is perfection, but that doesn't make a bit of difference when you can't do multiple goals at once anymore. Most goals aren't interesting enough to be isolated, and you have to listen to an NPC's life story before and after each one. So, the game is just a slog with zero replay value.>THUG: 6/10Level design is perfection, and the goals are more interesting than THPS4, but the replay value is still weak. Getting off of your skateboard is the stupidest innovation they could've thought of: imagine if the commercials for an FPS hyped up the ability to disarm yourself.>THUG2: 9/10Story mode lets you chain goals together again! And classic mode brings back the two minute timer!! AND there's SIXTEEN maps, all of which are fantastic!!!>THAW: 4/10Absolutely witless game. So boring that its mediocrity isn't even laughable. Anyone who rates this higher than a 6 is trolling you.
>>12781108Forgot to mention that THUG2 has a 10/10 soundtrack.
>>12781108The 4 from PSX were the only good ones. 2X on Xbox gets a pass for the extra levels but that's it
2 on PSX and 3 on PS2 are 10/10 for me.
3 is the best thougheverforth
>>12781108I got tired out by the time THUG came out. So sadly never got into THUG2 by the time it came out in 2004. I can see why the series crashed and burned though since even my friends who were into skateboarding and the THPS games were waning in interests over it by Gen 7.
Pretty legit rating but focusing on the thps4-thug1-thug2 are the most interesting points.Thps4 -> thug1 made it so you can start and end a goal in one second and select all the goals from menu. Pretty good and they obviously tested and got complaints a lot about how long it takes to activate or deactivate a goal in thps4. Even tho retrying a goal was instant even in thps4, which was real nice. Zero delay. In thug1 the vehicles also suck but you are not forced to drive one that often, gladly. The missions are just skate letters, combo letters and high scores but masked better but what more can you ask. Also getting off your board is instrumental to skateboarding compared to other extreme sports where you usually just don't get off your roller skates, snowboard or bike for a quick walk or climb. There are different ways they could have limited it's usage in combos or if at all, but they embraced the silliness where your combo doesn't end the moment your feet touch the ground.Thug2 is where it gets interesting. They were really going for something with the thing where goals can be started anytime (after they are found first, anyway) but the game never clicked with me well.
>>12782491The levels are not that great except Airport which is interestingly a downhill level. Too bad they only had a teleport to the beginning in the later ports but it doesn't hurt it much. Suburbia is the worst example of having adventure levels where you just explore different places like it's a spyro level but it doesn't have much flow at all.Thps4 had a similar level design, it was a full adventure game at that point, but the levels were huge with few useful lines. Kona is the worst one but they probably realized it quickly themselves that the real park didn't transform into a tony hawk map but went with it anyway.Thug1 has some real golden levels with endless but creative lines. Some mid-game levels can be a bit empty in that game too but some of the best are in thug1.
THUG2's Classic Levels having background characters skating in them was genuinely mindblowing given what had come before
I don't know how I would rate it today, but I LOVED American Wasteland when I was a kid. Today I would probably get filtered by shitty voice acting or something.
>>12782612>goals can be started anytime (after they are found first, anyway)Nah, you don't even need to go up to NPCs for most of them.
>>12782729I meant that you need to find other characters hanging out or hiding to unlock the goals. Then you can often complete them with any skater unless they are secret skater specific.
THUG has a great story though.
>>12781108>THUG2 9/10Not a single mention of the obnoxious goals not involving a skateboard. The maps are not all good. THUG1 is by far superior for skating.
>>12783110THUG2's non-skater characters actually control nice. If you want obnoxious goals not involving a skateboard, look no further than your beloved THUG1.
1 was the only tony hawk where I enjoyed the 2 minute goal system. with the bloated goal lists of 2 and 3 unless you were an ultra autist the system felt half baked. easily crossing off 2 or 3 off and then quitting wasn't that interesting.
>>12783136So 10 goals is bloated and for autistic people but 5 is still okay. You realize you don't have to complete more than like half to unlock the next level and in most levels you can do that in one run when you start knowing the level.
If we're just looking at THPS1 through THUG 2, what is:The worst map?The best skatepark map? (I think a lot of the maps set in skateparks are pretty dismal.)To me, Chopper Drop from THPS2 is pretty abysmal, considering you could pretty much recreate it in the Park Editor with two quarter pipes and a shitton of punji sticks. Doesn't help that it's supposed to be a secret level. I appreciate the idea, but there's nothing to it other than trying to see how far you can jump.Marseilles from THPS2 is probably my favourite skatepark themed map. Has a good mix of vert and street. Rio from THPS3 is good too, but it's way too easy to just do the infinite grinding loop on the boarder of the park. Kona from 4 is pretty alright.
THPS has the best soundtrack and Police Truck is the best song to appear on any of these games.
>>12783420Favorite skatepark map is the Vancouver one in thug1. Based on a real indoors park but really good flow for the game.
Before 4 even came out I was playing 3 online and was doing 20 mil+ combos. You do one combo, land at 1:59, and start a new combo that you keep as long as you can post-timer. 2 combos / run. I remember buying THPS1 in early '00 so I have the most nostalgia for that.1 - 5/102 - 6/103 - 8/104 - 8.5/10UG - 9/10UG2 - Don't really remember but I think it was great, everything after? Not so much.
>>12783961Doing 2 combos gets you far in upper middle tier games in thps3 I guess but if you start another combo the multipliers go to trash. But the combos were shorter in thps3 so it was probably safe to land at 1:59 so you at least have the base score.
>>12781108first game is the best. 2 and 3 are just extra levels
>>12786509If 1-3 had the level out of ramp air thing which was introduced in thps4 then they would hold up even better. Also being able to get off the board to cross stairs or some grass/dirt but not being able to use it for combos. Those things would be cool to see modded/reverse engineered in and someone has probably already tried or even done it.
>>12781108>2, 3, 4Pretty good>UndergroundMy childhood, loved it>American WastelandIt was all right.>American Sk8landPretty good for a handheld. First time playing online. But I was already done with this lovely series of games, moved on to other things.
>>12781108Downhill jam is kino Hank and American Wasteland is the best of the 6th gen games
itt: a bunch of losers who never played the original game because all the lists said 2 was better so now they pretend it’s bad
>>12786920How can AW be the best when the whole game is a tutorial unless you like the story and characters the best.
>>12786925the first one is bad because there's not a lot of combos to make
>>12786960Classic mode is peak in THAW
>>12782708yeah but removing all the existing classic NPCs and soundscapes in favor of generic THUG2 pedestrians is a sin. a whole generation never got the two guys arguing in LA or knocking the guy pissing into the lake in Canada.
>>12789363Explain to me in detail how the actual fuck you can think this.>hmm yes rather than the actual classic games, or THUG 2's massive new-and-old classic mode, I would like six (6) maps rehashed from a PSP port that look like shit, play like shit, and don't even have the bare minimum of interactivity or goals beyond hi score and collect the doodads
