A classic.
Did gook wrestlers just never have any gimmicks at all?Was it all just "serious wrestling man"
>>12783391Their gimmicks were to do more extreme stunt work than Americans were willing to do
>>12781908>The player controls a submarine travelling across the bottom of the screen shooting at fighter jets flying by>When a level is completed, the game plays a pinging version of "Deck the Halls".>the instructions on the back of the packaging appear to have been lifted word for word from the blurb of a boxing gameLmao it's even more fucked up than I thought.
>>12783391They got one dude that shrugs.
>>12781281Funky dad?
>>12781346Patriotic anime...
>>12783402My gimmick is I sawdust my neck and retire at 35.... like 95% of the roster kek wab

>>12781282>>12783680Probably a case of guys in their 40s who didn't play or understand videogames being tasked with creating box art for a game which features an art style that they found personally repulsive, so they just leaned on their generic late 90s/early 00s advertising artstyle skillset, and went with a "let's do something weird and striking" approach

>>12785148The original Finnish cover art looked like this. I don't know whose great idea it was to add those ghosts to it for international releases
>>12786792>Clown World: The Game
>>12785325Curiously the genesis version box art was one of the coolest
>>12785430What is it with box art designers drawing random stuff on people's chests back then?
>>12783391They've got some that have gimmicks. Hard Gay's gimmick was being a buff-homo leatherman, there were those three guys who did a thing as the Black Tri Stars' Doms from the original Gundam doing a Jet Stream Attack gimmick, a bunch of female wrestlers who did facepaint or masks with one having a specific little aluminum trashcan that she'd beat people over the head with, and a few modern ones have gimmicks like being unintelligible retards.
>>12786308>super galdellc hourNah that can't be right, someone had to make a spelling error.
Always was a fan of this one.
>>12787105What a shitload of fuck.

Are you a bad enough dude to kill a dragon on a motorcycle?
>>12787136Fun fact Fatal Frame was called Project Zero in PAL land. For a very long time nobody really knew how to market Japanese games.
The Gunstar Heroes cover artwork we didn't get
>>12783391Unlike gimmicks in sports entertainment promotions that are so shallow they are easily understood the instant one looks at the wrestler (one guy is a dentist, the other guy is a zombie, the other is really patriotic), the gimmicks of (at least some) Japanese wrestlers are more nuanced since they're not nearly as cartoony and are more like actual people with depth to them.
>>12785126Is that a celery pizza

>>12786782Reads «kgazch eevaee» in Russian lol
Part of me thinks that this one is one of the reasons why they ended up calling the Blue Bomber Mega Man - kinda like how Starfox became Starwing/Lylat Wars due to some German company called StarVox.

>>12788969Ok nlw this is really fucking cool.
>>12783680In the 90s, youth-targeted marketing in the US was all about looking edgy, weird, and gross, like a grunge music video.

>>12786308Played this after seeing the cover and I am in awe at how good the models are for a PS2 game, they pretty much look like they do on the cover, sans the resolution (and that can be fixed in an emulator)
>>12789916i keep getting this game mixed up with flashback for some reason.
>>12789951Same
>>12789951>for some reasonSame studio, spiritual sequel. There was an actual direct sequel, Heart of the Alien for the Mega CD, but few people played it back then for obvious reasons.
>>12789979>spiritual sequel. Then where does fade to black fit in?
>>12783391>Was it all just "serious wrestling man"Pretty much. Japan's "slam heard 'round the world" moment was the Rikidozan - Masahiko Kimura match. To give you an idea, imagine if prime Hulk Hogan and prime Chuck Norris had a pro wrestling match in one of the biggest televised events in Japanese history, but it turned into a shoot and all of Japan watched as Hogan beat the snot out of Norris. That's basically what happened in Rikidozan - Kimura, and that moment solidified the image of pro wrestlers as the ultimate badasses in Japan. And then two of who were practically Rikidozan's adopted sons went on to create the Japanese equivalent of WWF and WCW in their father's image and dominated the industry for 50 years. Rikidozan was the archetype that Japanese pro wrestling idealized and followed; he literally was the gimmick, or more accurately, he was the philosophy and legitimacy. That is, until PRIDE happened, and Antonio Inoki almost destroyed what he and his "father" created, and FINALLY forced Japanese pro wrestling to reinvent itself.
