It's understated how much damage this port did to the Saturn early on. It was the hottest game of the era, a good port would've sold the console like hotcakes and yet they released something that made the console look like the 32X. Put it next to PS1 Ridge Racer and it's obvious what people would choose.
No one plays this Shitga Gaytard crap.
All they had to do was listen to KalinskeVirtua Racing on the 32X mogs this garbage
>>12782785Dunno why it was so shit when the Sega Rally port came out the same year and was actually great
>>12782785Daytona USA arcade released later than Ridge Racer arcade so it was far more complex to port to console. Ridge Racer was a very simple game with a low detail track and very few cars on screen which made it more appropriate for a faithful port.
>>12782785nah, it looked great back in the day when it was new. this and sega rally both were pretty stunning at the time after coming from NES and SNES.
I wonder if they rushed the game to coincide with the surprise early US launch. I know it released in Japan a month before that launch but that doesn't necesarilly contradicts that. When you consider that Sega's certification method was failing other games because of small polygon pop-out when at the same time Daytona had much bigger more obvious pop out, it really begs the question.>a good port would've sold the console like hotcakes It wouldn't have at least not at launch in the US because the console was too hard to find until September of that yearand when it comes to games they also had Virtua Fighter release with flat shaded polygons when they could have had Virtua Fighter Remix .So anyway it's not the only thing that damaged the Saturn early on; in fact both Daytona and Virtua Fighter were well received at the time with their flaws being noted as small quirks rather than the deal breakers people have made them out to be in hindsight once they were re-released. The real issue for the Saturn early on was the surprise launch and the lack of support for third party devs before the console launch and in the first few months after its launch.
It's not even bad, sure framerate is a bit worse but you have 3x the cars and tracks of ridge racer. The only sad part is they changed the driving in the new port
>>12782974>Dunno why it was so shit when the Sega Rally port came out the same year and was actually greatThe 6 months between releases probably gave them time to get more out of the system. Daytona had wide open tracks with long draw distances and up to 40 cars racing. Sega Rally had narrow tracks that twist and turn with only a handful of cars racing.
>>12782785Most people who bitch about this port have never even played it. Whilst it's far from perfect, it plays just like the arcade version and has both much higher detail cars and far more cars on track than Ridge Racer. Its flaws are greatly exaggerated by Jewtube grifters because people will only click on retro gaming videos if they're about some "disaster".
>>12782785>Daaaaaaaaaaytoooooonaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa it's moving! this game was fun as fuck back then. fuck off.
>>12782785DAYTONAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
>>12783301Sega got new tools during that time, see chapter 2 here for a run down https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OrMqYVB5G-4
In Japan, Virtua Fighter and Daytona made some people doubt the 3D capabilities of the Saturn but this quickly changed with Virtua Cop or Sega RallyIn the US most people got access to the Saturn much later on, around September since nobody could get their hands on a Saturn from the "surprise launch" till then, so the reception was different. Looking at old usenet posts there are people comparing it to Ridge Racer and saying it's not that different (there are also dubious posts of people supposedly seeing the game before the game came out but those were doubted even at the time by other posters) while also saying the showcase/test for the Saturn would be Sega Rally which was closer along by that point. The last poster claims RR is a better home port than Daytona. So overall this particular cause shows a mixed reception, not a "disaster" Just search old usenet posts for "Daytona USA Saturn" before 1996 and you'll find these 2 threads easily "Daytona USA Saturn is out!" and "Daytona USA: Arcade Vs. Saturn"
I dunno, man. I had this thing playing in my living room in May of 1995 and it was the most mindblowing thing I'd ever played at home to that point. It's a rushed port for sure but I was still impressed with it at the time.
Another bullshit revisionist thread.Daytona was one of the reasons people bought the Saturn, and was the envy of Playstation owners.
>>12783310This is inexcusable bromy own footage, in b4 screeching about youtooooooobers>>12783398L O L (You)
>>12782785I know this is a thread fixated on "what could have been" in 1995, but the Championship Circuit Edition is a lot better
>>12783424it's way better than the release title but it still suckssega should go full on super scaler games instead of THREE DEE which absolutely sucked
>>12783435because the saturn wasn't enough of a flop
>>12783412Looks great to me, even for an emulator!
>>12783435>hurr durrr le ebin gimmicky superscaler shitStale and even then saturn was far away from the system 32, the rad mobile port sucked ass
>>12783424The performance is great but see >>12783232 they changed the gameplay and original aesthetics too much
>>12783412Looks absolutely fine for a 3D game from 1995. Have you considered that you're the problem?>>12783424CCE sucks. They completely broke the handling and the improved draw distance comes at the cost of smaller, uglier cars that look nothing like the arcade game. The new soundtrack is also total ass. However, the later revised version of CCE, released as just Circuit Edition in Japan and later the NetLink Edition in the US, mostly fixes up the handling and restores the arcade soundtrack. It also pushes out the draw distance even further, though still has the ugly cars. It could be considered the definitive version on the Saturn, but I'd still rather play the original port.
>>12782785I got this after playing Ridge Racer 4 and the first 5 minute impression comparing it to RR1 was terrible. Its not even a bad conversion, the game can slow down a bit because it can shove more than 5 cars on screen in front of you but otherwise its generally very good. There are many especially early ps1 games that have far worse graphics and detail. The biggest issue is the demo loop shows the worst parts of the game and has some of the choppiest frame rates. They probably should have tweaked the game to be like Sega Rally or Dayton CCE, just have limited cars on screen, do it like how early Genesis arcade ports were tweaked to be less demanding.>>12783301During the early period the Saturn was considered good enough. It was around Final Fantasy 7 that the trouble started.>>12783373it was insanely expensive at the start anyway
>>12783539>and later the NetLink Edition in the US, mostly fixes up the handling and restores the arcade soundtrackI downloaded the NetLink edition and feels the same? even the soundtrack. Fuck me why I do keep falling for /vr/ memes?
>>12783412>ITS NOT 60FPS??????? AIIIIIEEEEEEE IM GOING INSAAAAAANEEEEEE
>>12783767The original game on the arcades is 60 fps, and people did expect a port to respect the standard set by the arcade game. Of course, this was a very difficult task, which is why most console ports of arcade games were not viewed favorably, and why "arcade-perfect" was a real term. Ridge Racer's console port was one of the few that got very close to that when it came out.
>a game with two levels where you drive in a circle 5 times would be a huge system sellerOk bro
>>12783778>He wasn't alive during DaytonamaniaSucks to be youPS1 Ridge Racer sold 1.5M and it has even less content than that.
>>12782787fpbp
Daytona USA and Ridge Racer is trash I'd rather play Mario Kart
>>12783412I wonder what was the first 3D console racer without noticeable or egregiously close pop-in.
>>12782785Mediocre graphics and frame rate aside it's infinitely more playable and fun than Ridge Racer and it's horrible physics ever were
>>12785219Both can be fun. Also both are mogged by Sega Rally.
>>12785220I like v-rally better but sega rally is good too. Have you ever played segaGT? I couldn't get into it as much after playing the others, and I also haven't tried ridgeracer yet either.
>>12785227>Have you ever played segaGT?Nope, from the outside it seems like decaffeinated Gran Turismo, can't say I've felt tempted to play it.
What killed the console was the fucking price. It was expensive and you couldn’t convince your parents to shell out 400$ for a “Sega Saturn” no matter what games was on the damn thing. Not to mention the 32x was a flop and had a nigger in the commercial. The Super Nintendo and Genesis sold because accessibility. When parents noticed other parents buying it and kids begged for it because their friends had one, it was considered a normal thing to adopt into your household. Saturn was an expensive niche enthusiast rich kid product destined for failure because it wasn’t accessible. It’s like the laser disc of gaming consoles. Nintendo was VHS. It just wasn’t suited for easy adoption. No killer games would have made it a must have because the purchasers almost never cared how good the games were. Nintendo had tons of shit games and it sold. Tons of people had full library’s of super nintendos shit games with maybe 2-3 games that didn’t suck.
Reminder that you could also see the track pop in in arcade Daytona
>>12785264But it popped at good framerate
>>12785219>Ridge Racer and it's horrible physicsFor some reason the games feel much better in first person. After Rage Racer they lost their touch though.
>>12785301Hating RRT4 has become pure contrarianism like the people throwing a tantrum at FF7 or OoT>but it's le easy!If you pick DRT as your team it's in line with previous titles, it's never been a difficult series to begin with.
>>12783445you don't need to type like a retard, dudeI'd rather have the "gimmicky" arcade Super Monaco GP or Outrunners instead of this botched port
>>12785306I'm not hating R4, but they did simplify the driving.
>>12785317BS, the model was simplified from Ridge Racer Revolution onwards and stayed the same. The drifting never became as tactile as the first game.
>>12783412it doesnt look worse than Ridge Racer PSX to me
>>12785329>20fps with super short drawing distances look the same as 30fps with sensible drawing distancesget your eyes checked or stop being a fanatic, pick one.
>>12785332not a fanatic, I only played Ridge Racer. Calm down, it's a discussion about a videogame, you'll be fine even if someone doesn't have the exact same opinion as you.
>>12785337Try playing Saturn Daytona and you'll see it's a lot worse in action than in video, as your reaction times will be actually affected during gameplay, something you can't appreciate when watching a video.
>>12785323>stayed the sameR4 removed reverse 360 noscopes
Modern Ridge Racers missed the mark by not improving the sense of speed. I'm snoozing trying to play the psp games. They are so slow.
>>12785514Slow to progress, yes. There's a LOT of grinding in the PSP games (and the 360 and the PS3.) But you won't be complaining about the slow speed once you unlock the higher machine classes, you'll be complaining about how bullshit the physics are as you try to thread the needle on your sideways drift at 300km/h+ while the AI gets in your way all the time.
>>12785901It's an FOV thing I'm complaining about. When you do the external cam it looks awful compared to Burnout for example.
>>12785312You are delusional retard thinking those ports would be better than daytona, let alone more relevant commercially
While it's still leagues better than Championship Edition they didn't even get the physics right. Collisions with walls are off and the whole thing is just slightly off. If you're gunning for good times in MT on the Expert course you'll notice it.
>>12786334I implied it would be better games with acceptable performance, idgaf if it would sell well as I'm not a marketer or store owner
>>12786803and I already proved you wrong retard, rad mobile is 30 fps, has worse draw distance and looks worse, same board as outrunners. Saturn isn't as le ebin 2d powerhouse as 2d hipsters thinks it just can do older mid 80s superscalers
>>12785220A racing game were you race alone? Looks boring as fuck
>>12786970>"Why aren't there a bunch of cars ahead of me on the screen at all times??"That's called being last place, buddy.
Daytona USA was a top seller for the Saturn in the US all throughout 1995, even after Sega Rally came out.
TU TURU TU TUTU TUTU TURUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
>>12782974because it was rushed
Meanwhile, in Europe, players had taste.
This piece of shit is unplayable however
Ooooh the damage! Look at the damage!!
>>12787808This is literally an advertisement
>>12787817An advertisement based on what a shop was selling the most. If Daytona was such a disastrous port, it should have been outshined by Sega Rally by that point.
>>12787808>Smooth animationu wot m8
>>12786049I tried RR5 with the widescreen patch and it's so much better than the default view.
>>12788890lookin' blocky

>>12788890huge difference in gamefeel
>>12782974Circuit edition fixed all problems, plus sega lost the deal with nascar.Even the pc port of daytona has problems, second that they tried to shove that garbage known as sega touring car championship with the most atrocious controlsever down everyone's throats.TOCA shat all over this and gt when it came out.
>>12783424The jap release fixed all issues and included the full soundtrack.
>>12787764All ports btw, ir only someone claude this faggot to discover what the fuck sega did with the asshole handling.
>>12788974>Circuit edition fixed all problemsControls like fucking shit though

The only Saturn racing games that matters.
