I still don't understand why so many were scared of this red screen.
>>12783383When there is something strange, in your neighborhood.
>>12783385Who you gonna call
>>12783383zoomers like you wouldn't get itstick to your gacha ''games'' kiddo
>>12783386He-man
>>12783383It's the colour of delirium
>>12783383It means your disc is potentially fucked.
>>12783383It was the 1st liminal space in gaming.
It's scary in that it could mean your disc is no longer readable, but zoomers love to pretend that everything about old gaming is utterly terrifying due to having no culture
There is nothing scarier than loading up your portal machine that takes you to other worlds to escape reality and it says the portal is temporarily out of order...This screen has caused countless suicides
>>12783465>PortalNot retro
>>12783471YOU'RE not retrogotem
>>12783463It's more annoying than scary desu.
>>12783383Only collectioncucks care about this. Us real gamers who actually play games dont worry about this screen. Its non existing
>why does something familiar suddenly changing scare people?Mystery that one.
>>12783383First, you need to learn to contextualize.Back then I was 14. Had a gaming PC (Pentium 4 and Radeon X800 pro) and a PS2. I don't remember exactly what happened to trigger this PS2 red screen, but it happened, and it terrified me... "dad and mom are going to kill me if I break my own console." Thank God, all it took was removing the disc, putting it back in and turning the console back on for the problem to go away.Doom 3 on PC scared the shit out of me. And not only that, a simple antivirus alert made me freeze in panic... imagine breaking my family's computer.
I as a poorfig piratechad, was used to it.
>>12783383Nobody was, it was just an exaggeration that too many people started pretending they actually felt.
The actual feeling when it happened was pic related
>>12783529I would say scary initially because you wouldn't be expecting your game to suddenly not work, then turning to annoyance once you clean the disc and it works without issue again. The momentary "uh oh is my game broken!?" was a big deal for me whenever it happened. Sometimes, like with GTA3 and VC for me, it did actually mean the game disc was damaged.
>>12783471>No later than december 2007>release date october 2007Portal is retro
>>12783383Yes, the prospect of your videogame dics becoming too damaged to run was scary considering the prices.
>>12783383>be 2004>disc is borked>oh well i can just buy another used disc for $6 at gamestop lolbe 2025>disc and/or console is borked>[bank account vietnam flashbacks]
>>12783383I hate this bait format. you'd have to be the most dense person in the world for this to be a genuine question.
>>12783383What do you mean "scared"? DRE was a massive problem on the PS2 back in the days. However that probably mostly affected most retards that couldn't open the system and clean it and play with the gears a bit. I got sold in High School a PS2 for cheap, pretty sure the guy tried to scam me, as the PS2 was doing this a lot, but me and dad opened it up and cleaned the lens and it still works to this day>>12783463We are talking about the very weird trend of a few years ago that fascinated zoomers somehow of weird fake anti-piracy screens and other shit like that, which the PS2 DRE screen would fit into?
this thread is weird I was a little kid when I played the ps2 you millennial guys were im highschool of course you weren't scared seeing this late at night when you just wanted to play cars the movie game
>>12783383Because it meant you now have to go back to the store and argue with the clerk that the game you paid $60+tax+tip+reservation fee+complimentary blowjob from (you)+tip does not work
This is why disc based = bad. I have never seen a game cartridge fail.
dont think i ever saw it
Aspergers
>>12784153>I have never seen a game cartridge fail
>>12783383I've literally never seen this screen is it because I would put discs back in their cases when I was done and not let my dog chew on them?
>>12784395I was going to say the same thing but in reality it was the edge connector inside the system that was failing to make the game work
>>12784410>it's the system that was failingThat's... worse.
>>12784414Only a problem for USA cucks because we had to have a VCR style system to trick us into buying it
>>12783421Or worse, the laser.
>>12783383American protestants think the color red is demonic
>>12784410Well how am I supposed to blow on that shit if it's not a toploader?
>>12784395tbf, this seems to have been an NES-exclusive problem. I never remember having to blow into an SNES or N64 cart to make it work.
>>12784395>>12784410>>12784463>>12784467The problem wasn't the cart, it was never the cart, it's that the NES used a retarded spring system that was prone to failure.
>>12783383Earlier model PS2s were defective, their disk drive would eventually start to fail reading disks, giving you this message. There was a class action lawsuit over it, which Sony lost. I was effected by this, and their "repair" from the lawsuit barely lasted a few months, got a modded PS2 after that, fuck Sony. Also that message itself is just somewhat creepy. Expecting the usual boot image but getting the blood red background and the weird off-putting tone it plays during this instead. Feels like it was meant to invoke being isolated in a horror game.
>>12784467>>12784516It was primarily the fault of the NES10 chip, but the spring-loaded mechanism didn't help. Remember how the NES would just blink a grey screen if you powered it on with no game inserted? And even the power LED would turn on and off every time the screen flashed? That's thanks to the NED10 chip, whose job was to basically internally press the reset button every second if the cartridge you had plugged in didn't pass it's copy protection check. Problem is the NES10 chip was VERY VERY sensitive, and dirty or loose contacts could trip it, even if the rest of the game was working perfectly. This was made worse with the spring-loaded cartridge port, it would bend the pins over time, which eventually would cause a poor connection over years of use that cleaning would not help.Blowing into the carts did jack shit, it was not a dust issue, and even if there was dust in there unless it looked like it had not been touched in decades it's unlikely there was dust that you could just blow out in there, it would have required scrubbing with alcohol. If anything, it was worse for the carts because your spit could corrode the contacts. Maybe if you were lucky said spit helped temporarily form a better contact, but it would dry up quick.
>>12783545That's because you had shitty parents. My dad would explain to me what was wrong and help me troubleshoot fixing it, and if something was actually broken they wouldn't get mad, losing whatever I did was punishment enough.
DRE's and red screen meant the laser was fucked. Like with PS1, Sony rushed production and early models had lasers that worked great. Until good games came out and they finally got a stress test.
>>12783383Death laser simple as that, and that was caused by mutt games mostly either mortal kombat, jak and daxter, crash bandicoot, gta games , because were poorly made shit.
>>12783383Because it's telling me I did something wrong when I didn't. It's like getting pulled over by cops or "You did an illegal operation." in Windows./thread
>>12783383the ps2 laser literally kills itself when it has trouble reading a disc happened to two of my ps2s
>>12783386the nut-busters
The music piece when that happened was real creepy.
The screen is beautiful.
>>12784153Those things rot if they go too long without powerIf you haven't touched your ds/3ds games in a decade some of them are probably fucked right now
