Just picked up Curse of Darkness on og xbox and Lament of Innocence on ps2. I remember Lament being a big deal for some people in my area when I was working at GameStop when it came out but I never tried it and I know next to nothing about Curse of Darkness. What’s your thoughts on these games or any 6th gen Castlevania games? I also just picked up Castlevania 64 but I think I’m going to start w Lament because the ps2 is hooked up. But yeah, Castlevania thread in general.
>>12784442Lament honestly doesn't feel like Castlevania but some people like it and the story is interesting if you're a Castlevania canon fag. I've never played Curse but I've seen more people say it's the better of the two games and feels more like CV, basically a 3D Igavania.Castlevania 64 isn't considered canon if you care about that sort of thing.
I finished both Lament and Curse like 3 months ago. As a 3d ''Igavania'' is not good. Only 1 weapon type, whips. You can unlock alt versions like fire and ice whips but they share the same boring moveset. Level design is almost non existent. You will go through the same looking corridors over and over again. Platforming is terrible. There is almost no equipment compared to SOTN. When the shop updates with new items, they are direct upgrades of something you already have. Like a better armor. The unlock bonus after finishing it is really boring. You can play as a vampire who was a shitty boss earlier. The only things I liked were the music and sub weapon system. When you kill a boss, you acquire a gem, Equipping it, changes sub weapons and there are like 6 games so 6 attacks for each sub. Pretty cool. Curse of Darkness is Lament but better in every way. A plethora of equipment, items, weapons with unique move sets and special attacks, a weapon crafting and demon forging system, familiars who help you unlock secrets, a fun stealing mechanic, better boss fights, characters, story, unlockables (can play as Trevor). Is a loaded game compared to LoI. If you like it, try the enhancement mod. It adds even more stuff. Level design is still terrible though. Still, Curse is the closest thing to 3d SOTN.https://castlevaniamodding.boards.net/thread/773/castlevania-enhanced-curse-darkness-modI was upset when they cancelled Igas Ps3 and Xbox 360 game in favor of that God of War clone. Loved Curse and was very hyped for this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5cANFk2FRE
>>12784507>Only 1 weapon type, whipsThat's a good thing
>>12784442I enjoyed both at the time, but it has been so long since I played them that I can't critique them very well. I liked Curse of Darkness more than Lament, largely because it was sort of a 3D metroidvania and there wasn't much competition at that regard, while Lament was fun but underwhelming compared to the top action games on the console.
>>12784507Interesting thanks for the info. I’ll start w lament so I don’t lament (haha) going back to an inferior product. >>12784484Why is CV64 not canon to the lore? I’m not a Castlevania lore fag but I do love lore and if I get into I may like to know more.
>>12785006Yea I think I missed Lament initially because there were so many options for 3rd person action games or whatever the genre is called. DMC, ninja Gaiden, god of war, Rygar, all kinds of variations on that type of game during this era I feel like. I’m excited to try them out tho and see what I missed.
>>12784507I liked Lament more than you but I mostly agree with all of this. I think the individual levels are better in Lament but Curse having like a horizontal igavania map nudges it over Lament slightly. Lament has the much better soundtrack however.
>>12785010>Why is CV64 not canon to the lore?I think it was just a different development team. They also made the first one on GBA iirc which isn't canon either, or it just belongs to the alternate canon of the games they made. Very few people are autistic enough to care about the Castlevania story and timeline though anyway.
>>12785580Interesting. Yeah I don’t see people at least on this board, who seem to care about the lore of Vania games but I’m assuming the story in the 6th gen games is more emphasized because well, this was when games started really going all in on story for many games across many genres w voice acting now easily possible etc
>>12784507Curse of Darkness is not better in every way unless you're a dopamine addict who needs to see new stuff all of the time with the item crafting and Innocent Devil systems. It needed more time to bake in the oven before they released it. It was very poorly balanced compared to LoI and the area design doubled down on everything shitty about LoI's areas like lack of verticality and long hallways like the 2D games but in 3D, very boring and tedious since they didn't even add any kind of sprint movement ability.
>>12786805That’s a stark take. I’m curious to see how I’ll feel when I play them. Going to try and play them back to back if possible and see how that goes
>>12786789Lament is supposed to be an origin story but it honestly isn't very memorable in that regard. Somehow the limited tidbits of lore you get in the Igavania games is both more interesting and memorable. Classic case of less is more, a lesson Metroid failed to learn too.
>>12787502Sounds like it’s pretty short too, is it only 8 hours long?
>>12784442They're both shit. Some baffling design decisions in these games considering it was the same team that made Sotn.
>>12785153CoD does not have a horizontal "metroidvania" map. The exploration is almost non existent. The game is literally just long hallways. If the game had procedural levels instead it literally wouldn't make a difference. It's basically a diablo type game.
>>12787930Around 9-10 if you explore to collect power ups.
>>12787930My one playthrough of the game back when it was new was exactly 10 hours, and I tend to take longer than average to finish games.
>>12787985>>12788015That’s cool for me right now because I need a shorter game. Kind of in a what to play rut but I feel motivated to play some Castlevania that I haven’t played before for some reason so 8-10 hours is perfect.
