Who introduced you to Retro Games?
Elementary schoolers. I was also an elementary school student.
i agree gccx fags are retarded but so are you for posting wojaks, fuck off
>>12784808I did.
>>12784808kill yourself my man
>>12784808Games I grew up with are now considered “retro”.
>>12784808if someone introduced you to retrogames, you are too young for 4chan.back the the day we didn't call them retrogames, they were just games.
>>12784826This. I just never stopped playing my old games, and kept playing new stuff for old consoles. Old games never became less fun for me.
>>12784828What is this, the boomer LARP board? I got a badge on retro achievements for beating 12 Wii games this year lol.
Having a brick for a laptop when I was in college. It could only run 90s games at a good frame rate.
>>12784808I've seen that chink posted regularly for the last 14 years and I still have no fucking clue who he is or what he does specifically, and nor have I cared enough to ask until now.

>>12784808>Who introduced you to Retro Games? My parents and siblings when I was 3 years old in 1993. We didn't call them retro games back then, they were just current games.
>>12784831>using retro achievements>thinking Wii is retroYeah, you're way too fucking young to be here.
i went to an arcade in 1987 and played galaga and donkey kong and defenderwas 2 years old. one of the few things i remember about being smol

>>12784808it is weird that there's one specific e-celeb allowed here for years. There should just be an occasional general for any retro game content from anyone
>>12784872>>12784881This isn't a retirement home.
>>12784808i can say i "stopped" playing retro and upgraded every new cycle until the 360 and when the xbox one came in 2014 2015 whatever. i never got one cause the 360 games were cheap. always got shit like "genesis collection" etc knew about emulators but didnt use them alot. did beat some ps1 games like keyboard only basing the keyboard controls of games ive played. this was back in the deamon tools days. eventually i got a good cell phone and rediscovered emulators again so to speak. andriod one of those cheap ipega controllers to bind it and had little retro hand held for a few years eventually i got a wii home brewed it and a pi 4 and homebrewed that. still use my laptop for ps2 emulation sometimes
>>12784887Yes it is.
>>12784895No it isn't, you're just old man who yells at cloud while people play retro games.
>>12784808The less hair I have the stronger my desire to start series and genres at the beginning. And the more I find old games to be refined and soulful. It started with classic DOOM, now I'm on the original Final Fantasy and Warcraft.
>>12784808I just realized that technically I have no interest in "retro" games in the sense that I have no interest in games before my time. I started playing games as a kid with NES and that was "current" for me.
>>12784898This board literally was all millennials and genx before 6th Gen ruined it, fuck off newfag. We're still old 4chan here and you're going to keep having a bad time so go back to/v
>>12784914Well duh you started with the NES, I started with n64 and ps1 and NES is as far back games are good, gen 1 and gen 2 are shit
>>12784808My brother had a SNES. I'm like 7 years younger than him so I'm not part of that generation, but when I was like 3 I used to sneak into his room when he wasn't home and play with his SNES. He always got really mad about that, and my parents got sick of the fighting, so one morning when my dad came home from work (he was a trucker) he woke me up and surprised me with my very own SNES, 2 controllers, and a stack of games (including cool shit like Donkey Kong Country and Dino City). After that my brother lightened up a bit, realizing that I could actually play video games and wasn't going to destroy them. We started playing games together after that. One day I found a weird black thing in my sister's room while she was cleaning, somehow I recognized it was a video game but it looked different from Super Nintendo games, so I snuck it into my pocket and asked my brother about it when he got home and he said it was a Sega game. It was Sonic 2. My sister had a Genesis but she broke it because she's retarded. Soon after that my brother bought a Genesis model 2 and we played that in addition to the SNES. My brother had a part time job and over time he picked up some other consoles. N64, PSX, Dreamcast, even a Game Gear. Also he got a GBC as a Christmas present one year, and I got one for my birthday not too long after since I expressed interest in it. A few years later I bought a GBA and eventually a Gamecube. I had an Xbox at some point too.Eventually I grew up and my love of video games led me down other avenues, and my collective interests led me to move to Japan. Within a few months after moving here I bought a Super Famicom, and over the years picked up other consoles and slowly built up my collection over the years. And yes, GCCX is way better than YouTubers. It's not even comparable.
>>12784885Arino isn't an e-celeb you retard
>>12784921sorry, "regular celeb with a 600k sub youtube channel"
>>12784920Forgot to mention, in the early 2000s when plug and play things were popular we had a Famiclone that my mom bought through QVC. It had like 84 games on it, all real too, just hacked to have the copyright info removed. So that's how I played NES/Famicom games when I was a kid. At the time I didn't know what NES or Famicom were though.
>>12784927GCCX is a TV show and predates the existence of YouTube by several years. They only made a YouTube channel a few years back to upload old episodes as part of celebrations for the 20th anniversary of the show.
avgn had a bigger and wider impact in retro vidya culture and discourse than gcgx could ever hope to achieve
>>12784830That's how I've always been. I was born in the late 80s and had an NES and then an SNES as a young kid. The NES could play games I loved that the SNES couldn't, so I never viewed it as old and outdated, just a different console that could play different games.
>>12784942Considering I know who AVGN is and have no idea who the other guy is, I agree
Both are well liked and celebrated in Japan. Not sure if Japan even likes any other eceleb other than AVGN.
>>12784808The IGN retro website and a newspaper article.
>>12784834Japanese comedian Shinya Arino plays a character called Kacho ("the chief") he's like a supervisor of a blue collar sector but for whatever reason he plays retro games, and the whole gist of it is that his team must ensure the chief can beat the games on his own.The humor is very japanese and most of it revolves around Kacho being passive-aggressive or sometimes outright rude to his team who are trying to help him beat the game.Unlike AVGN, Kacho rarely critiques the game, and instead is very patient and basically exhausts himself (and his team) to long hours of filming and playing until he beats it or doesn't (and the the challenge fails and he doesn't, or rarely, re-attempts).It's a pretty fun show and Arino is a great comedian. Incredibly dickish at times!

But also I was already playing 'outdated' games when I was old enough to play them, my first console was the NES.If a game was really good, you didn't just stop playing it, you'd go back to it even if it was kinda old. Emulation was fantastic to me, because it meant I could, without paying, experience all those cool SNES and Genesis games I had previously missed out on.>>12786681Who the fuck doesn't consider it old? >>12784808Your mom
>>12786693What's retro or not is for the current youth generation to decide. It was like that when you were young, too. I'm sure you didn't care if an older family member insisted that they were still "hip" and "with it". You are that older family member now. You are too old to matter when it comes to this subject. Age gracefully instead of coping about it.
>>12786703seethe
>>12785360Correct.>>12786414All true. I enjoyed 7th gen but it's so fundamentally different from all prior gens that it simply doesn't need to be on here. We basically never left 7th gen for what it matters, and while it would be nice to have a place to discuss the actually good stuff from that era, it simply should go elsewhere./v/ has been made out of increasing amounts of cancer and AIDS for 15+ years, so I understand not wanting to talk about those games there, I sure didn't want to talk about games there either, and /vr/ coming around was a real blessing to me, but I think what's actually needed is a /vr2/ or something for old games from 7th gen and later.I'd personally use such a board, and I think there's a much stronger case to be made for it than most of the other /v/ offshoots.>>12786717That would be a better argument if 4chan as a whole (and especially this board) wasn't primarily populated by Gen X and Millennial men. Doesn't mean that 4chan's userbase must strictly be slowly withering and eventually geriatric, and new blood still comes here, but when that's the current core audience, our say on a niche interest board like this carries some weight.I really think that a later retro board for 7th gen would better respect older users, while also accommodating younger users (or old users like me) who want to talk 7th gen games in peace.I think it'd reduce friction with older users tired of seeing people complaining and shitposting about bringing in 7th gen, which I think would probably relax those people towards younger users, and relax younger users towards older users.
>>12786754>That would be a better argument if 4chan as a whole (and especially this board) wasn't primarily populated by Gen X and Millennial men.Do we actually have demographic data that supports this? I get the impression that older members are moving on and most of the website is now zoomers
>>12786760I'm actually not really sure, in part because 4chan's user numbers cratered pretty hard after the hack (some boards are very slow now), but I'd feel that it's kind of besides the point for this board in particular, because I cannot imagine that /vr/'s userbase isn't primarily Gen X'er's and Millennials, along with the segment of the kinds of Zoomers who actually are into these eras of games.
>>12786770Seems to vary depending on the thread/game/series being discussed. For example, the Pokemon threads even here seem to trend into Zoomer/Alpha territory when it comes to demographics. I remember when moot first made /vp/ and then renamed it to "/tr/ - Team Rocket" and it was all very themed around the older games at the time with people who enjoyed discussing them compared to the newer ones, now those same first couple gens are openly despised across the site and you get called a "balding millennial" etc if you like them.
>>12786760As an older user (2006), there isn't really much for other places to move on. R*ddit is shit and I hate it, Xitter is bad in all its own ways, and Facebook isn't much better. Smaller and tight knit Discords can kind of be nice in their own way (public ones are complete dogshit), but it's still not the same.4chan and its structure is the kind of discussion is what I want and always primarily wanted, I like the general anonymity, and the kind of relaxed attitude and lack of overbearing censorship. It's seen better days, the loss of staff has been catastrophic for post quality all over the site, but I cling to the hope that things can one day be better again, and I treasure the little corners I still have left here, because there are still good people here who I want to talk to.I don't really care if posting slows down some, because boards being on a slow boil can be pretty nice and comfy (/vr/ has had periods where it was slower than even this), all I really crave is that shitposting gets actually dealt with.I'm holding on here for as long as the ship stays afloat, because it feels like it's going to be difficult to effectively build a new place QUITE like this. Could I try one of the alternate chans if it finally sank? Maybe, but they aren't going to be the same.
>>12786793Many of the old guard have moved on to altchans. The annoying politics-obsessed activist types became redditors.
>>127867602009 oldfag hereSpending too much time on any board makes me wish the website would kill itself already, but I doubt it's much better anywhere else. Loving videogames means having to share the hobby with the dumbest motherfuckers who ever lived. Simple as.
Uh, I was 5 when the Super Nintendo came out? But I didn't have a console until the PS1/N64 so I played everything I missed out on in emulation in the late 90s/early 2000s
>>12786785>Seems to vary depending on the thread/game/series being discussed. Most probably.>For example, the Pokemon threads even here seem to trend into Zoomer/Alpha territory when it comes to demographics. I think in part because many of the smarter ones recognize that recent Pokémon games are becoming increasingly shitty and low effort, so they look back towards what was regarded as the best stuff. Since Pokémon broadly plays the same as it always has, the older games are pretty easily accessible to newer kids because they already know what to do, there's rather little friction to try them if you just understand basic emulation.>now those same first couple gens are openly despised across the site and you get called a "balding millennial" etc if you like themI think that's an overcorrection in response to older overcorrection. In part because there were insufferable people way back then who more or less made it their personality to reflexively hate anything after Gen 2, or even Gen 1, because they were less into the games for what the games were, and more into it for their own nostalgia. Those people aren't interesting or worthwhile to talk to if you like any of the games after that, so people started hating them, and this snowballed into hating them becoming trendy, and then hating anyone who liked the old games at all (compare a bit to how weeaboo once meant insufferably obsessive japanophile, rather than anyone who liked anything Japanese in any capacity). It's kind of like two different contrarianisms at odds with each other.I think Gen 1 is good, and replaying it for the first time in like 15 years recently, I found it pretty fun still, even if Gen 3 was my favorite. Also I have long and full hair still.>>12786797I know. I miss when there were less people on the web and it was less polarized.>>12786815Roughly same. Stopped mattering that I didn't have a SNES or Genesis, because my big brother revealed the magic of emulation to me.
>>12786754>That would be a better argument if 4chan as a whole (and especially this board) wasn't primarily populated by Gen X and Millennial men.I don't think that's anywhere near as true as it used to be. I think specific topics attract an older demographic, but like the other guy said, I think most older users went to either altchans or discord at this point. I mean I'm in private discords too but I don't use them as a substitute for this.
>>12786824>I think specific topics attract an older demographicI play the mobile game Umamusume and its general on /vg/ is jokingly known as an ojiisan general because it seems rarer to find a poster under 30 than over. To be fair, you basically are required to have a decent-paying job to play a gacha unless you're full f2p, so that would attract older people who generally have more stable and thus more disposable income.
>>12786430Same, though I find that jaks are like 300x times as annoying as frogs.>>12786572Weeb interests were brewing pretty strongly in the western world while us Millennials were still in diapers, and moot sure isn't a Millennial. 4chan was created in 2003 by a 15 year old who wanted a place to discuss anime, and it became a hub for people of a similar age and older.>>12786824>I think specific topics attract an older demographicProbably true. Definitely true on /vr/.

>>12786848>moot sure isn't a Millennialmoot is absolutely a millennial. Everything about him screamed millennial weeb. >>12786850Yep>Millennials, also known as Generation Y or Gen Y, are the demographic cohort following Generation X and preceding Generation Z. Researchers and popular media use the early 1980s as starting birth years and the mid-1990s to early 2000s as ending birth years, with the generation typically being defined as people born from 1981 to 1996.[1][2] Most millennials are the children of baby boomers and older Gen Xers,[3] and are often the parents of younger Generation Z and Generation Alpha.[4][5]>Members of this demographic cohort are known as millennials because the oldest became adults around the turn of the millennium.[28] Authors William Strauss and Neil Howe, known for creating the Strauss–Howe generational theory, are widely credited with naming the millennials.[29] They coined the term in 1987, around the time children born in 1982 were entering kindergarten, and the media were first identifying their prospective link to the impending new millennium as the high school graduating class of 2000.[30] They wrote about the cohort in their books Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069 (1991)[31] and Millennials Rising: The Next Great Generation (2000).[30]

Decided it sucked and I missed gameboy advance games. Got an emulator for gba on my computer, then a ps2 and played whatever I found in the GameStop discount bin. Sly, ratchet and clank, shadow of the Colossus. It was dope. Recently got a crt and hacked the ps2. plan to crack open resident evil for the first time. Ace combat was awesome and so was metal gear solid.
This thread is hilarous because of the simple fact that the Japanese love AVGN just as much as Arino. They even have their own memes about James, and he even shows up as a cameo in an anime or two. It's really just /vr/ that keeps shitflinging over this.

>>12784808>>12784834Host of a popular retrogaming show in Japan, just like AVGN is popular in the West. Both were casual players, Shinya Arino (GCCX) was first and foremost a comedian / television host, and James Rolfe (AVGN) a filmmaker / content creator. The difference between Arino and Rolfe, is that the former started taking gaming "seriously" for his show.Rolfe is nostalgic for NES and SNES games, but he is a movie guy. His actual passion are films (like old Godzilla movies) and filmmaking. Mike "motherfucking" Matei, the guy who has a 10-inch cock and owns a legit copy of Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire for the PC Engine, was the "true" gamer guy of the AVGN show.

>>12786714The video games industry got too big for its own good, capturing the attention of soulless corporatives, who will do anything to satisfy their masters (which is, all the investor, rich fuckers with political connections, who hold the industry in a vice grip) who really don't care or really know what video games are, except that they're "sorta like interactive movies, right? So make them like this". They're the ones who have enough money to buy out any promising studio and turn it into another gear in a big, slop producing machine. Before, even TV serials required a lot of brainstorming and only the best ideas came through. Today, they're produced like toys by a variety of streaming services, which also make their stuff streamlined as well, a new production or more a year, for every age group and genre, in order to capture as wide an audience as possible. Same with the AAA games. There's no room for anything new, just taking what worked previously, changing some things around in order to avoid getting sued for plagiarism, and voila. Same happens in the general music scene, I'm happy that at least the genres I like keep developing in a natural way (Down -> Top, people getting recognized for their sound and work, instead of Top -> Down where literal nobodies get promoted worldwide as "stars" and they're really nothing special - stuff that everyone with good looks and corporate training in this direction can achieve). We no longer have as many artists as before, they have been replaced by "content producers" and rewarded for enough "community engagement".

While I grew up with the tail end of snes and mainly the n64, I suppose it was the wii virtual console, virtualNES, and zsnes that exposed me to "retro" and got me into those games. A fond high school memory is my mates cheering me on playing Mega Man 3 over the summer on a school pc on VirtualNES. I couldn't figure out how to beat the final wily machine before the end of the session.

Playing Namco arcade games as a kid, because they were only like ten years old at the time.I have literally never not been into "retro games". They were just games back then.
>>12784942He had a pretty negative effect on video game discourse, all things considered.A lot of perfectly good games and even consoles are written off because of AVGN. I used to believe a lot of that stuff, back when I didn't know better. I thought there were no good games on Virtual Boy, when there are actually like a dozen of them.
>>12787639>Worms, Lemmings, and Another World are bad games because they just are, okay. I will not elaborate
