What are your thoughts on the game boy modding scene? Worth it or should you just get a chinese emulator handheld instead?
It's fun to do mods and stuff, but if it's more about just playing the game, I'd just get an emulator. Though, if you're a hardware hobbyist, there's cool stuff.

>>12785106I've seen for DMG game boy and game boy pocket you can back light mod the original screen. You get the convenience of backlighting along with the original look and feel of the OEM screen. I haven't seen it in person, but it might be up your alley if you're purist. Unfortunately there's no such mod for GBC. Something to do with the screen tech making it impossible to modify like the older screens.
gameboy flash carts are a pain in the ass and expensive. I just use chinkhelds

I have a DMG Game Boy that I had since 1993 whose screen is pretty much bleeding/dying and I thought about putting a new screen in, but the fact that I gotta desolder the damn thing from the board (and my hands nowadays aren't exactly steady compared to a decade ago, and the replacement I saw that, while it looked kinda cool, involves mutilating the plastic shell (something that I DON'T want to do) to get it to fit properly and soldering the speaker to it (you're basically replacing most of the board), seemed like too much work for little gain to me. That, and I have a Teal (the best color) Game Boy Color and a GBA SP so it's kinda defeats the whole point unless I really, really want to play Conker's Pocket Tales in Game Boy mode.Thanks for reading my blog.

I have a GBA SP that has a broken screen, but those replacements screens are too expensive and im too lazy to sell the broken SP, so its just sitting in a drawer.I have a original GBA that i need to clean the powerswitch contacts because it keeps restarting because theyre dirty, but that requires desoldering it and im telling myself ill do it but im probably too lazy. I just play GBA on my GBA Player now

I prefer the way the Original Phat DS screen looks for GBA games, so i tend to play GBA games on my DS, it has a backlight but it still has desaturated colors

i bought a reshelled one out of curiosity/needing a 2nd gameboy to trade pokemon. the dpad is so shit on it. you have to press it pretty hard to register.

ive got a wide gba with the afterburner light from way back but I much prefer my RPC now. big OLED display with a matrix overlay looks better than any OEM gameboy display or mod, period, and its really not even close. plus the benefit of all my other retro collections on it too.
