What are your thoughts on the game boy modding scene? Worth it or should you just get a chinese emulator handheld instead?
>>
It's fun to do mods and stuff, but if it's more about just playing the game, I'd just get an emulator. Though, if you're a hardware hobbyist, there's cool stuff.
>>
>>12785091
It's fine, and I'm glad those options are available. That said, I view the display tech as part of the gaming experience for handhelds, so I tend to be a bit more of a purist in terms of it being the original display and not a modern drop-in.
>>
>>12785091
You didn't beat the game
>>
>>12785091
Only acceptable if the original hardware is beyond salvage and spare original/replica parts are unavailable at a reasonable price. Removing an original screen that is in good working condition and mutilating the Game Boy to add some modern, brain-damage-inducing laggy chink LED slop is a crime against humanity. Use an AGB-101 or a 3DS with open_agb_firm if you don't want to deal with a reflective display. End of discussion. Everything else goes against preserving the original hardware. Fuck you zoomers, and all the TikTokers and YouTubers who promote this crap and the people who blindly follow them.
>>
>>12785106
I've seen for DMG game boy and game boy pocket you can back light mod the original screen. You get the convenience of backlighting along with the original look and feel of the OEM screen. I haven't seen it in person, but it might be up your alley if you're purist. Unfortunately there's no such mod for GBC. Something to do with the screen tech making it impossible to modify like the older screens.
>>
gameboy flash carts are a pain in the ass and expensive. I just use chinkhelds
>>
>>12785091
I have a backlit screen and rechargeable USB-C battery pack in my childhood GBA, so I can't condemn it entirely. I still think most mods are shit and go unused, though.

Honestly, I don't know. I have a DMG Game Boy that I had since 1993 whose screen is pretty much bleeding/dying and I thought about putting a new screen in, but the fact that I gotta desolder the damn thing from the board (and my hands nowadays aren't exactly steady compared to a decade ago, and the replacement I saw that, while it looked kinda cool, involves mutilating the plastic shell (something that I DON'T want to do) to get it to fit properly and soldering the speaker to it (you're basically replacing most of the board), seemed like too much work for little gain to me. That, and I have a Teal (the best color) Game Boy Color and a GBA SP so it's kinda defeats the whole point unless I really, really want to play Conker's Pocket Tales in Game Boy mode.
Thanks for reading my blog.
>>
>>12785091
I wouldnt replace the screen in my GBA or GBC, its part of the experience to see the low contrast colors.
i might aswell use a chinkheld or a laptop+emulator if i want a better screen.
>>
I have a GBA SP that has a broken screen, but those replacements screens are too expensive and im too lazy to sell the broken SP, so its just sitting in a drawer.
I have a original GBA that i need to clean the powerswitch contacts because it keeps restarting because theyre dirty, but that requires desoldering it and im telling myself ill do it but im probably too lazy. I just play GBA on my GBA Player now
>>
>>12785091
i like screen mods because old screens suck ass the gameboy advance is especially dogshit and unusable indoors. for the gba there is a screen mod that uses a dsi panel thats my favourite as you get gaps between the pixels like the original screen playing on original hardware is better than emulation especially for connectivity with other old hw
>>
>>12785868
ags 101 is pointless in current day when the ita mod (dsi panel) exists also hard to source as most of them are fake chink panels
>>
>>12786323
>its part of the experience to see the low contrast colors.
do you own a gba? you literally cant see them indoors even with lighting
>>
>>12786361
i do own both a GBA and GBC, both without backlight, but its not that bad if you have a bright light and angle the screen JUUST right that there isnt glare but still enough light
>>
>>12786367
idk i bought one and couldnt see it at all in my bedroom sat in a bunch of different places in my room thats what made me look out screen mods in the first place
>>
>>12785175
Are there replacement screens for the original look?
>>
I prefer the way the Original Phat DS screen looks for GBA games, so i tend to play GBA games on my DS, it has a backlight but it still has desaturated colors
>>
>>12786828 (cont.) if you are curious what it looks like, try the nds-color shader in Retroarch/Shaderglass, its pretty accurate
>>
>>12785091

I have an IPS gbc and gba but I tweak the screen settings like LCD grid and desaturation to look like the originals but with a backlight. I like them alot more than chink handhelds. A bit pricey for what they are but it's worth it to me.
>>
>>12785091
I don't see the point in screen mods. I'd just use an emulator handheld. The original screens are hard to come by and have a unique look that you can't emulate. I don't know what other mods exist.

>>12785784
A chink everdrive gets the job done for like $25.
>>
i bought a reshelled one out of curiosity/needing a 2nd gameboy to trade pokemon. the dpad is so shit on it. you have to press it pretty hard to register.
>>
>>12787008

Sounds like a you problem. The buttons on mine are totally fine and feel like how I remember them being. Maybe a shitty button kit was used in yours
>>
>>12787014
Probably. The a and b are fine, its just the dpad that bugs me. But I have only used it for pokemon and don't plan to do anything else with it anyway so it's a very minor issue.
>>
I would like a gb/gbc and gba with video out mods.

It has better colors than the AGS-101 though, that thing gives everything a blue tint and lots of ghosting

ive got a wide gba with the afterburner light from way back but I much prefer my RPC now. big OLED display with a matrix overlay looks better than any OEM gameboy display or mod, period, and its really not even close. plus the benefit of all my other retro collections on it too.
>>

Anon?
>>
I think it's cool as a refurbishing/repair thing but it's pretty shitty to gut perfectly working consoles to do it, especially when it's a destructive mod. I also think past a certain point you're losing so much authenticity that you might as well just be using a chink handheld.

I also think it's fucking stupid how modding scenes drove up the price of broken/for parts consoles to the point that a broken handheld just costs the same as a working one now
>>
>>12789426
The OG screens are shit anon
>>
>>12789428
Don't use OG hardware if you think that.
>>
>>12789435
How about no, I do what I want
If you use a modern IPS screen that's the wrong resolution I'd agree
I also changed the capacitors, speaker and power switch too what you gonna do about it
>>
>>12789439
Call you a faggot on the internet.
>>
>>12789441
I also put an XStation in my PS1 and Fenrir in my Saturn
My Dreamcast has new silent fan with a GDEMU and modded battery socket too
I've got a bunch of mods on OG hardware
>>
>>12789450
These mods are at least non-destructive but I still don't see the point.
>>
>>12789471
Because I play games anon
>>
>>12789428
GBA fat and AGS-100 I guess, but there's nothing wrong with any GB/GBC screens
>>
>>12789507
The AGS-001 is fine for what it is desu.
>>
>>12789507
Well there’s no good native resolution screens for GB/C
The Chromatic has a fantastic screen if you want a backlight
>>
>>12789523
There's no reflective displays at all.
>>
>>12785091
for the original dmg-01 model you only need 2 mods:
1- Backlight Display Mod V3 with bivert chip(pay 20-bucks at a repair shop for the job if you dont know how to do it)
2- rechargeable batteries

anything else is overkill faggotry, if you want modern features buy an analog pocket or play in your phone with the taco controller or whatever its called

The GBC screen is legitimately good looking. Zoomers hate it for the retarded reason of no backlight.

The GBA screen in contrast has always been dogshit.
>>
>>12789524
Sorry dude, but I like not needing an outward light source
>>
>>12789658
Nothing wrong with emulating, then.
>>
COMRADE!
You have destroyed TWO perfectly functional Game Boys to construct ONE AGS-101 abomination. For crimes against the proletariat's Game Boy supply, you are hereby sentenced to LIFE IN THE SOVIET DMG LABOR CAMP. No parole for your bourgeois decadence.
>Repair 47 cracked DMG screens before breakfast
>Recap Game Boy Pockets until your hands stop working
>Restore every console damaged by an AGS-101 modder

TWO GAME BOYS WERE PERFECTLY FUNCTIONAL. TWO GAME BOYS WERE TAKEN FROM THE PEOPLE. ONE MODDED GAME BOY WAS PRODUCED.
>>
>>12789662
And nothing wrong with modding
>>
>>12789687
It destroys perfectly good game boys for no reason, so not really.
>>
>>12789689
Nah
>>
>>12789689
To add to that, you people obviously have no idea about how plastic ages, enjoy this shit while you can
>>
I dont understand why you would destroy gameboys with these mods. just buy a chinkheld or FPGA console, instead of ruining the genuine hardware
>>
>>12789778
You don’t know what the word destroy means, stop being stupid
>>
>>12789801
the most unique thing about the hardware, the screen, is taken out, basically just turning it into a chinkheld.
>>
>>12789841
You sound like the type of person that can’t repair broken electronics
>>
>>12789873
what does that have to do with anything here?
if the GB or GBC or GBA screen isnt broken, dont replace it with a regular LCD screen that any chinkheld already has, it makes the GB lose what makes it unique from just a chinkheld.
if it is broken, you arent going to repair the actual broken screen.
>>
>>12790007
