Its cancellation is still a mystery to me. We have this press release from Jan 91 claiming that it's coming and that they're more than happy with sales of the first games, with plans to bring over FF3 along the way too. We have the leaked US proto from earty '91 as well which is about 90% finished.And although FF1 was published by Nintendo, Squaresoft of US which would have published 2 was already well implemented and making money with the GB FF titles.And then nothing until the release of FF4 SNES November 91.It is widely believed that they gave up on FF2 to concentrate on FF4 but this makes no sense to me. The SNES was released in the US late august 91, it also had a slow start and FF4 released in november. As I said they were established as a publisher and had the funs to release 2, the localization was almost done and in Jan 91 it was considered a done thing that they would release it and they thought it would easily reach top 10 sellers. They even had a WIP cover.They could have released NES FF2 by spring 91, long before the SNES even came out; and it wouldn't be an issue to then release FF4 for Christmas that year.I have a schizo theory that they were pressured by Nintendo and it's Nintendo that prevented them from releasing FF2, to help convince customers to switch to the SNES.
