I'd swap games from the corner store with ones I had that were shitty. I sticker swapped Superman 64 with Smash Bros and Madden with Majoras Mask. I think no one else used that store for rentals other than movies and they never checked.

I used save states to hasten my power-up cycles when playing through the SMW hack Jump 1/2. Instead of traveling across the map and re-powering up at the yoshi house I just did it once and used a save state to save myself the 30 second chore of doing it every time I died.

Once I start becoming competent though, the save states go out the window. That being said, I really only did it with Mega Man 1-3 till I learned you can use the moves relatively liberally to get through the harder parts of levels and Castlevania 3 until I got used to the platforming.

>>12790628Yeah, there are some bosses I just don't understand, and I beat MM7 Wiley with no savestates and genuinely enjoyed him. Even passwords to practice on bosses are a nice inclusion, but Sonic 2 is wild in what it expected from kids. I genuinely wonder how many children in America actually beat that game legitimately. I mean, I can run through it now with minimal problems now, but if it weren't for save states I legit don't know how you'd have the patience to get there, get 0 rings for the final two fights, and just have to die over and over to trial and error your way to finding his hit points until you run out and have to restart the whole game. Also, didn't know that about Ristar, I'll have to give it a go sometime. My backlog is booked for a bit though. Wrpg's and mecha games are priority at the moment.
Dropped the Amiga version of Turrican multiple times after first running it on NTSC speeds with a DS4 on WinUAE. I later remapped the buttons to switch the jump button (defaults to UP) to one if the face buttons. That felt awkward, so I left. I came back again, and reset the joystick inputs to default, and for some reason that felt better. I then dropped the game again after having a hard time using the powerup abilities, and then I realized that the best setup is a keyboard in your left, and a joystick with a button on the joystick on my right. I am now waiting for a "new" joystick since I don't feel like building a gameport adapter for the perfectly good PC joystick I have in-box. I also spent more time tuning Workbench 2.0 using custom icons and a decent background pattern. One day I will listen to myself and stop procrasting my fun.

I had a blast playing Bulk Slash and Sonic 3D Blast on the Saturn definitely took me back, but the jaggy dots that I know are supposed to be shadows kept putting me off. In any case, I see that the shaders behave differently between SNES emulators (or cores, rather). Everyone says bsnes only yet I find guest advanced looking a touch bit better on SNES9x core. Royale however, makes some parts bloom too much. Again, I'll have to play FFVI long term while comparing shaders in different environments. Narshe doesn't really tell me much, I'm sure. Retro Crisis, I'm avoiding as they dim the screen way too much.
