>This PC FPS sucks because moving with the keyboard and looking with the mouse is too complex

I mean yeah there's a reason Doom is so fondly remembered.

This is the magazine with the unhinged n64 hate.
I swear some articles were so insane you would have to believe that the n64 fell on the floor and killed the author's cat.

Pre-Iwata Nintendo treated the European market like crap. Ultra-late releases, many of them staying overseas, poor ass PAL conversions, untranslated games outside of Bongland, retail prices a lot higher than the US market this hasn't changed, etc. And even then the mags still had to obey the Nintendo bonus directive whenever a big title dropped.

The N64 did extremely poorly in Europe.

duke nukem 3d was literally made to be played with a joystick

The base joystick controls in Duke3D isn't looking, it's movement.

It takes a while to get comfortable using keyboard and mouse. I remember having a hard time playing Half-Life at a friend's, coming from Wolfenstein 3D/Doom and being used to X-Wing had me reverse looking up/down.

Little do they know that decades later there would be stupid 2D platformers with mouse aiming
>>

Doom was made with keyboard and mouse in mind. Its just that WASD wasn't standard.

I feel like the Dreamcast should have the ps1 or n64's phrase

I remember they shilled the fuck out of the 3DO and the M2 vaporware.

Next Generation reviews were always the most contrarian shit-takes.
>>
>>12789376
That's because you're not looking at it from the point of view of august 1998 but august 2026.

To be fair most people make that mistake with old games related stuff.
>>
>>12787880
Gaming press said similar shit when FPS' started using twin stick controls on consoles.

Try playing it with a ball mouse on a low res screen and you'll understand.

They're very hit&miss. Considering the amount of games they reviewed each month and that most reviews are 2 paragraphs at best, they probably did not devote a lot of time to most. They also care a great deal about innovation. They really missed the mark on Crash Bandicoot for instance but it's a funny read. The funny thing is that when a popular game got re-released on another platform and they re-review it on that platform, suddenly they liked the game a lot more.

But on a technical level they knew more than every other magazine out there though I still laughed at their preview of Dark Forces, saying it has "beautiful texture mapped 3D", it was a preview though so it was probably only based on looking at screenshots
