This is the 20th anniversary of the last good Final Fantasy game as well as the game that showed how capable the PS2 really was. Say something nice about it.
It's been nothing but let-downs ever since then. I don't get why they're so firmly stuck against returning to the formulas that worked. They know that's what customers want with how much they make re-selling the classics and remasters over and over again. Even Nintendo makes billions off of keeping the Zelda games classic but with modern resolution and detail while Squeenix bleeds money and hasn't had a good year in a decade. The ony good thing about FF16 is Square's refusal to make medieval Europe to be Black, Indian, and gay "for representation." Other than that, everything from 13 on out has been total crap.

FF12 is fucking trash. It was a game that was beginning to understand the design principles that would later become soulless gacha games: games where idly farming was the entire point. It is optimized for soulless bug people. Say what you will about FFX; at least the story leading up to the Blitzball tournament was a resonant (if not totally coherent) story. The most damning thing about FF12 was how Zodiac Age let players run the game in double time. That's how you know that shit was fucking tedious.The only credit I can give 12 is some of its character designs. Vaan, Penelo, Fran, and Ashe being the best looking ones in the game.
