masterpiece, must-play. transcends strategy rpg and has a richer, more vibrant world and characters than most if not all jrpg games of its era and any generations. a game you need to experience
inb4 fire emblem autists shit the thread up
>>12792069OP already started this thread as engagement bait, you may as well hide it if you don't want to see people calling OP for his shit.
>>12792085Sorry, but SF mogs FE.
>>12792085it’s a thread about my adoration and appreciation for sh2 and that i think everyone should play it. it’s not engagement bait at all. i’m not part of any turf war regarding fire emblem, i haven’t posted here in several years. please engage with the thread sincerely
>>12792090>it’s a thread about my adoration and appreciation for sh2I get that you love Silent Hill, but you don't have to be so obtuse.
I played it for her.
Yep. The rancid stench of FE homos has already turned the thread to shit.
>>12792090>it’s a thread about my adoration and appreciation for sh2I get that you love Silent Hill, but why bait with a mediocre Genesis game?
>>12792140try to chill out and not add to this, my only intention was to make a thread about how must-play shining force 2 is and that it really is timeless and has a wonderful story to tell. it’s my first post here in almost 3 years, i’m noy involved in the fire emblem rivalry, i’ve never played it. it would be cool to be able to have the thread be about how awesome shining force 2 is but if you must do your thing, go ahead. it does not make the board appealing, however.
>>12792123>>12792145it was a typo. do you really need 2 posts for this corny joke?
I played the first shining force. It was pretty fun, though if sf2 is more of the same I'm not sure I'll play it. Is it significantly different/ worth it to also play sf2?
It’s mid. I played it because of its reputation and it’s the same kind of game as lunar: generic 1990s anime world, generic jrpg plot, no creativity at all. Almost every FF game has better worldbuilding and characters.
>>12792171no. In some ways it's better, in some ways it's worse, but overall it's more of the same
>>12792171It’s more of the same
I will say that the combat is great and that’s 90% of the game time. So its not all bad
>>12792171it is significantly different and improves a lot. it is vastly more expansive and various in battles and exploration, and the story is much longer and more involving. all npc kings hsve inique abatars now instead of everyone looking the same. there is mithril for secret weapons and special promotions to make new types of classes. you get a caravan for travel. it’s a much better game overall, the story is more original ratger than light vs dark star wars ripoff
>>12792062> masterpiece, must-playDebatable> transcends strategy rpgNo chance lol> and has a richer, more vibrant world and characters than most if not all jrpg games of its eraShameless lies, you can’t even argue this as personal preference> and any generations. Even worse liesa game you need to experience> not really, only if you like the genre
>>12792180Shining Force 2 is basically a level pack for the first game with a new plot. You’re just setting ppl up to be disappointed
>>12792173the last thing shining force ii is, is generic. the story is full of unexpected twists and turns with colorful villains. your own party is very unique. you have a rat that gets promoted to a ninja with ninja magic spells. you have a robot shooting lasers out of his eye. you have a fight with a sea monster on board a ship and a battle where you’ve been shrunk and put on a chess board. this game is equal to any final fantasy in its imaginative and endless ideas throughout
>>12792186>Shining Force 2 is basically a level pack for the first game with a new plot.you’re overstating the similarity. 2 blows the first game out of the water in story presentation, battle variety, size and scope. it’s a superior game, not disappointing in the least and different enough to merit a playthrough
>>12792187FF7 or 8 have more originality in their tutorial zones than SF 1 and 2 combined. I played them both because of retards like you who seem to think it’s on the same cultural level as the bible. It’s anime trash. And I like anime trash but don’t tell people it’s anything better than that
>>12792194this is disingenous and childish. you are not to be taken seriously
>>12792201You're the one who thinks a jrpg boat getting attacked by a sea monster is an original idea
Faggot corral thread
>>12792215i cited it as one aspect of the game being more than generic, like the chess battle. a ninja rat with magic is certainly unique. you have to use strawmen and cheeypick out of context because you’re being willfully disingenous and hyperbolic. why not just argue in good faith instead of being an imbecilic child? it hurts the board and makes having a thread pointless if you use hard retard tactics instead of just being honest and saying why you like a more than b. no need to lie about things
>>12792239A jrpg sea monster is the most generic thing possible, there’s no point in this if you actually believe that’s creative. Secret of Evermore and Atelier Iris 1 also do the chessboard gimmick.
I actually like shining force because it’s like fire emblem for people like me that hate permadeath. But this is just stupid. There’s nothing special or creative about the story
>>12792243ok again, i am just citing a few things. i noticed you ignored the ninja rat with magic. a monk in a bikini who will beat you up and cast spells? how about a robot with lasers? how about a small turtle that gets huge when promoted? i’m not going to sit here and type every battle, villain, setting or character class to prove the game has a unique setup that is anything but generic. you are a retard being disingenuous and you know it. there is enough unique and creative flair in sh 2 that the label of generic is absurd, and i can sit herr and pick apart final fantasy and say it isn’t unique in the same way you’re doing but i am trying to engage truthfully, not use childish tactics to “win” but rather just discuss games for fun
>>12792250>There’s nothing special or creative about the storythen no game has a special or creative story
>>12792194well now you’re going to have to explain what is so uniquely creative and special about ff games and their story so we know it’s not mere retard bias. what isso original and beyond generic about ff7 or 8 ? be prepared, i’m going to argue inbad faith like you and quote only partial points and deliberately miss your overall points, and ignore specific points to avoid being truthful and generally play dumb and keep downplaying and being obtuse and retarded on purpose like you, ok? now tell me
for me, it's the gba version. i liked the new characters and the bullshit you could do with cards
>>12792289you're an idiot
I'm playing it right now, and I like it a lot less than the first. The music is worse, the pacing is worse, the story is probably the same, but feels worse because it forces you to interact with it more, the art style is worse.
>>12792327the pacing is probably one of the best things about it. it’s a vast game that never rushes its story but also trrats each chapter very urgently. i think you’re just saying things to say things. i mean you haven’t beat the game and you’re talking about its pace. you’re complaining that the story is interactive in an rpg.
>>12792336It's been a long time since I last tried to play SF2, but I think I understand his sentiment. Compared to other SRPGs like Fire Emblem or Super Robot Taisen where your interaction between stages is limited to picking options off of a menu and reading story scenes, having whole Dragon Quest-style towns to walk around in I think significantly slows the pace of the game down without adding much.I'm sure there are some people who do enjoy actually being able to walk around the towns and talk to random people, but for me the scale of a strategy game makes stuff like that feel like an unnecessary level of detail.
>>12792389>without adding much.it adds how you find your party members for the game, fleshes out the story (it’s a role-playing game, not mere strategy) and allows for player choice that the first game lacks. if you think that’s too much detail, why play an rpg at all? why not just play command and conquer?
>strategy games where players spend 2 hours preparing for a battle customizing equipment and character stats>muh pacing is an issuefuck outta here
>>12792417You don't do that in either game. The first shining force you quickly go from combat to combat, with brief pauses for story or shopping. In the second the preparation is no more in depth, but you have to sit through tedious dialogue and that retarded head shaking animation for the two hours you mention.
>>12792503you have to shop for new weapons and armorand decide who carries which items and rings, and decide which party members to bring in battle. it’s a mystery why you play this for strategy if there is not enough customization, and why you would play it fpr rpg elements when you hate the concept of reading text. you must be autistic
>>12792515I'd be fine with reading text if it was well written, unfortunately your pet game is not.
>>12792594wow bro you’re really deep, you play the well-written 16-bit rpg’s, you’re not about that fun stuff the normies play. deep writing in games like umm… uhh..
>>12792069Wow. How did this Nostradamus anon know what would happen to this thread?
Shining Force III is so much better than the rest of the series. Not that the other games are bad, it's just if you're gonna play one of them, play the SF3 trilogy.
>>12792289That's a remake of Shining Force 1, retard. Not 2.
>>12792738>The best game in the series was never released in the West and you can only play it if you can read Japanesefuck my life. Loved SF 1+2, wish i could play 3 but I'm not spending 3k hrs learning Kanji just for a video game.
>>12792171In some ways better, some ways worse. The battles are more varied and interesting, but the overworld is tedious to move around and random(-ish) battles can be quite annoying. And the story is a lot longer and more forced down your throat, but the writing and dialogue is still very juvenile. It's like a child reading a book he wrote to you.Overall, I much prefer SFCD. It's more one-note (no exploration, overworld, or towns), but IMO it's a tighter experience. It trimmed a lot of fat, and put less emphasis (compared to SFII) on an immature underbaked story.
>>12792239>a ninja rat with magic is certainly uniqueThat's not the story. That's a character. No one is saying the characters aren't unique. They're saying the story is extremely generic.>Game, Japan: MWEHEHEHEHE I AM THE BIG EVIL GUY AND I WANT TO DESTROY THE WORLD!!!>Game, Japan: (I am the silent hero and I will slay you with the legendary sword)>You: the story is so nuanced and deep, I am literally crying tears about the creativity and depth of early JRPG writingMan, I don't get you people. It's like you feel like your maturity or masculinity is threatened if you admit you like kid shit. Just admit the writing is underbaked and cliched and say you enjoy it, anyway. Don't pretend it's Ulysses.
>>12792883>No one is saying the characters aren't unique.read the thread. and the story isn’t generic, either. it is as far-out as its characters in many places. the first game is generic light vs dark, it copies star wars blatantly throughout.
>>12792891I read the thread. It consists of every person telling you the story line is generic, and you need raging that's it's ackshually not. A single person said FF7+8 had less generic characters, which, who gives a shit? Every other comment was about how bland and poorly written the story is.
>>12792893lol you are butthurt and can’t even be honest
>>12792834There are translation patches and emulator for all three game you fucking sperg
>>12792895I know you are, but what am I?
>>12792171more of the same but with pretty much every QoL problem from sf1 fixed. the only remotely valid complaint is that since it is a longer game, that its "too long" or "drags", but i feel like thats just a personal problem for people. if you enjoy the game and it continues scaling, whats the problem? some people just get anxious and want to "complete" something.
>>12792171SF1 is the most basic bitch S-RPG there is, the only tactic you need is "don't lead with ranged attackers", the enemy AI is dumb as a rock and level design isn't that interesting. 2 improves it in a lot of ways though I personally hate how almost half the battles take place on the world map. The Gaiden games have even more interesting battles, especially 2 and 3; and SF3 is where the series peaked. Forget that the GBA remake exists it's one of the the most vile and repulsive remake there is, hyper casualized and new mechanics that miss the point of what an S-RPG is supposed to be.
