90s games never needed raytracing

Zoomers think no one found these graphics impressive in 1992 and therefore no one ever cared about graphics back then

Haha, hashtag retro gay man

System Shock 2.is weird without textures blurry beyond recognition.

>WHOAAA NICE GRAFFIX
>>
>>12793843
I still find them impressive today. Playing those games today is like a mindfuck thinking "holy shit, I can't believe this was possible in 1992". I get a similar feeling from old CGI videos like that Dire Straights music video or the old Pixar shorts from the 80s.
>>
I love how more and more buzzterms get added to the vox populi.
>>
>the days when nobody cared about graphics
GPUs literally exist as a profitable market because of videogames.
>>
>>12794010
nta, but i think about this kind of thing a lot, because it's a weird phenomenon when you're living in the moment, and you're more impressed by it because it's a completely new experience and something you've never seen before, so when you look at it for the first time, you tend to think it's better than it actually is. It's also like being a kid, where everything is unknown, so everything has a greater impact on you.
>>
>>12793829
that image is wrong back then graphics were a big deal
>>
>>12794052
I think so. Like I remember seeing the old Pixar shorts as a kid because they included them on the VHS for Toy Story and other stuff. But as a kid, it just looked like Toy Story, so I never questioned it. And I had no idea that those shorts were from the 80s, nor did I even really know anything about what computers were like in the 80s. Now I'm an adult and I'm into retro stuff as a hobby and I have a few consumer level computers from the 80s so I know how shitty they are so it absolutely blows my mind to know that at that time there were computers available which were capable of 3d animation and it actually looks good. Sure, those computers costed millions of dollars at that time, but it doesn't change the fact that it's impressive.
>>
I think what was kind of true back then is that a lot of what made a game look good came down to pretty static traditional art
>did competent texture painters work on this game and give a damn
>>
>>12794081
I think what you said is true, but I don't think it was ever phrased like that. It was always phrased like "damn, this game has great graphics!" but we were talking about the art style. An artist could really make or break a game back then.
>>
>>12793829
People cared way more about graphics in the 90s and 2000s than they do now.
>>
3D was the raytracing of the 90s

>>12794001
It is unreal how the remnants of /v/ still repeat AMD bullshit to this day. Realize retards that raytracing is good and that RTX cards are real ray tracing.

I can not believe what kind of retarded Sneed neet posts this retarded garbage to this day unreal how once programed by AMD propaganda the Sneed neet will repeat it.

And I say Sneed neet because I bet that these are the same retards who spammed the Sneed meme shit who was never funny.

The facts are simple people enjoy rtx cards and use them even outside of gaming
>>
>>12793829
Actually when this game came out reviews complained it had bad graphics, and it was a financial failure. Why do you think there was no system shock 3?
>>
>>12794464
You have no idea what you're talking about, and you're also very mad. Weird way to live.
>>
>>12793829
too bad system shock always fucking sucked
>>
>>12794052
There's also a bit of relativity for graphics, when 7th generation consoles came around, I struggled to spot any problems with the graphics, but now coming back to these old games, I can now spot lighting issues galore and the meshes and textures look muddy
>>
>>12794464
I think I agree with you? I genuinely cant tell because of how retarded you type. What the fuck is a Sneed Neet?

Here, have some 90s (by the 1-10 definition) realtime raytracing.
>>
Personally, I think graphics peaked by the early 00s. We sure have more polygons and shit now but the mid-late 90s leap in graphics was truly quantum-tier.

In motion it's totally different too, I love how fast and clean that game is
>>
>>12793829
early 1990s already had raytracing though?
just not REALTIME Raytracing and all those "god rays" bouncing off each other.
older cartoons like Ice Age 1 was shilling "raytracing" too.

is this another AI bot post???

look i played the Unreal 1 Demo when it first came out and it didn't look that ugly. i swear the mag editors are morons or actually like the ugly screenshots they pick.

2000s were peak polygons and nice water effects.
but 2010s was the real peak before the games actually started getting uglier for various reasons and sys req bloat.

this smells like offtopic samefagging from /pol/tards trying to make 4chins look more nazis.

anyway , no. realism in art is fine. it's when they try to pervert art and beauty like with "Cubism" and "modern art", where none of the artists can even draw a decent fruit bowl or a human who looks human. then we get "art for the sake of art" made by wankers just to sell to collecterfags who don't love art or play videogames at all. look at the artists today? in the west at least, they're filled with trannies who draw the ugliest creatures or it's all basic super-deform artstyles , not because it's popular , but because most of the artists can't draw anything realistical or beautiful anymore.

>inb6 banned for offtopical reply to offtopical shitposters.
look at the box art for Everquest and MnM6. now look at modern cover art for CRPGs. they're not trying anymore. and the old masters have since died or retired.

UWs and SSs were cutting edge 3D graphix back in the day. and they still flopped. it's like how Xbox console games had better graphix than PS2 and still flopped. stop rewriting history.

Looking Glass' dev history is well documented.

yeah those '90s 3D games look 'bad' now but not at the time. it was also 'whoooa, look at those graphics!' back then too.

This cover did not look as contrasted out as this picture shows. It was darker and looked way better in person. And I think that cover used a special cover type paper that other magazines didn't use. Not sure if just for that one issue, but it felt different. I remember buying that issue.
That or I'm schizo. Plausible.
>>
>three levels of bait
Impressive.
Now get the fuck out.
>>
>>12794873
People were blown away by the graphics back then because the leaps in technology were more significant than we've had in the last 25 years. We went from 2D sprite graphics to fully 3D modeled and textured virtual worlds.

Of course we still cared about gameplay, but graphical innovations were more boundary-pushing back then, and as a result, more impressive and worthy of praise.
>>
>>12794971
You're quoting a Frenchie, the people who are most famous for bastardizing the art of Western Culture into abstraction and relativism. The reason realism coincides with decadence is because the culture that bore that realism was at its zenith and capable of supporting the knowledge, technology, and training for such individuals to perform it. Jean Renoir is just a post-modernist apologist retard.

People have always cared about graphics, the difference is games didn't bloat their dev time by literal decades for them. OOT got delayed by less than a year to have its graphics updated.
>>
>>12793829
>90s games never needed raytracing
ahem
>>
>>12797205
>People have always cared about graphics
Some people. Other people care more about gameplay. Better graphics can enhance an already good game, but they can't make a bad game into a good one.

The newest trend of hyper-realistic facial modeling and animation to go with the dialogue? Keep it. Metal Gear Solid's vague facial shados were enough.
>>
>>12796790
>Is this ugly? I rest my case.
It's also not realistic you dumb midwit loser. fuck off and never come back here.
>>
There was never a time when people didn't care about graphics except maybe the days were people thought games peaked with ping pong and tetris and didn't expect more. By the 90s people were impressed and cared about graphics fully and the graphics developed quickly indeed (in turn you would have to keep buying newer computer tho). Nowadays the graphics have stalled for 15 years but more computing power is needed every year because there's zero optimization.
>>
>>12797560
Not disagreeing but mgs1 was probably one of the first games where devs wanted to have mouth movements but it would have taken too much work/processing power (to make them passable) or delayed the project and that's the only reason they weren't included.
>>
>women
>minorities
>bureaucrats
These are who are responsible for the entire gaming industry being shit.
>>
>>12798279
Adult white men still buy a lot of these games they claim to hate with their heart. Granted, big part of the business has been kids with their parent's credit card being the customers.
>>
>>12793829
I cared.

Until everything became brown with brightness and bloom, then i stopped caring.

>>
>>12798278
>devs wanted to have mouth movements but it would have taken too much work/processing power
Yeah but that forced an artistic decision that's still great.

Sometimes less is more/
>>
>>12797560
Even old games were trying to push their consoles to the limit. However those consoles still had pretty hard limitations. The problem now isn't that people are chasing graphics, its that effectively all the limiters have been removed, there is no ceiling if you have enough money to throw at the engine. Which results in a lot of wasted dev time.
>>
>>12793829
I remember seeing the N64 kiosk in the toy store as a kid and being blown away by the graphics upgrade from Super Mario World

What are you talking about. The mid-late 00's trend was to keep desaturating the color out of everything for the sake of realism and this was also around the time when developers discovered what bloom was and started shoving that into everything.
>>
>>12798267
>Yea, you see this incredibly life-like realistic statue with the wrinkles of the skin carved into it? It's not realistic at all
