How the fuck do I get gud at these games?
>>
Truxton Extreme (2026) is very good at teaching noobs how to learn a shmup through its game design. Try that game
>>
But the way is, play over and over until you get good and can 1cc. You have to be able to enjoy the short term gameplay so the slow progress don’t bother you
>>

What I mean here is the story mode incentivizes you to play one level until you beat it, and then do it 2 more times to master it even further. It feeds you story after each one, and doesn’t make you redo level 1 a hundred times to get to the new stuff.
>>
>>12794961
The R-Type games are puzzle sandboxes, where routing and experimenting is hella fun (Final especially since it has 100+ ships to unlock, and some stages will alter from run to run).
>>

>How the fuck do I get gud at these games?
(You), the fuck, don't. They're full of artificial difficulty, bad design, yada yada yada.
>>
You play them. It's a transferrable skill. I had no problems beating the game with little setbacks (fuck the time travel level tho).

R-Type also has amazing storytelling, you only get a few glimpses yet it's enough to get hooked.

>where routing and experimenting is hella fun
Are there any good routing guides for Final and the other R-Type games?
>>
>>12794961
R-Type Final is one of the easiest SHMUPS out there.

You don’t need guides zoomer, just play the game and learn from it

As someone who played R-Type Delta, everything about Final feels so tonally off and weird especially the way the game begins. I refuse to believe these games were made by the same people.

If we are gonna go with tone than R-Type 3 had the coolest tone.

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/TrKiXT7Uie8

I actually played R-Type 3 as a kid on emulator but I could never ever beat the first level. But it just seemed so cool back then, especially the intro when you are inside the cockpit and selecting the forces. The music too is the best, I remember I would just boot up the game and sit and listen to all the stage BGMs in the sound test menu lel.

Also is there a good rule for when you wanna use your wave canon on bosses and when you should just rapid fire them? Or do you just have to learn it for every boss individually?
>>
Damn, only made it to the boss on Stage 6. Is there any way to give yourself more credits in R-Type Final?
>>
>>12794961
I suck at shmups. Like chronically bad at them.
I fucking DEVOURED R-Type Final. One of the only games I gleefully 100% completed and it didn't feel like a grind.
>>
>>12794961
R-Type is one of those shmup series where the execution is like floor level so you just learn exactly what to do and that's it. In fact it's the main shmup like this.
>>
>>12795479
Luckily I still have my CIB copy I got for cheap back in the day. I could only make it to the 4th level. First was pretty easy. You need to get good.

save states to practice levels/sections is the fastest. Obviously you didn't beat the game if you save state during real runs though

You didn't beat the game if you did that
>>
>Picking anything but Shadow Force when available.
Literally unbeatable without dettaching it, keeping it close and positioning the Arrowhead to get the opposite shot right.
>>
One complaint I have now after play this game a little bit, is just how much the camera actually moves during boss fights. It has happened more than once now that my ship has just been dragged in to an obstacle or a boss hitbox from the camera moving.
>>
I found R Type Deltra when exploring psx emulation, I fuckin loved it. Poured hours into it to figure it out, although I still struggle with penultimate level. It's a perfect game, looks and plays nice, has fantastic music and level design, the setting is perfect. I wanted more of that.
So the obvious choice was to pick up Final. It's so fuckin bad. What the hell happened? Everything is wrong with this stupid game. The difficulty is uneven, the music and art is untasteful. The levels are boring. Did the series peak with Delta? Are the arcade classics good? I'm afraid I'll be disappointed if I try them too
>>
>>12795595
Same here. Unlocking and trying new ships felt so good. You were always wondering what kind of new weapon will the next ship have.
>>
>>12796757
>I'm afraid I'll be disappointed if I try them too
Try R-Type III.
>>
Gradius V and R-Type Final are the finest shmups of the PS2 era. Absolute masterpieces imho
>>
>>12794961
Not truely retro
>>
>>12797890
The PS2 came out 26 years ago.

There is a part on mission 6 that I can't get past. It's after the skeleton dick dragon thing, when you get swarmed by enemy from behind you, from in front of you, from below you, and from above you, and I have no idea how you are supposed to make it through without just perfectly twitch dodging everything. I can't tell if there is actual trick to it or not. Most other screens in this game you can prepare for, but that one I have no clue what to do.
>>
>>12796757
Final is quantity over quality. They even made another one recently.
>>
>>12798106
How much easier/harder is Delta compared to Final? I like the puzzle element of R-Type, where you can just prepare if you know what's coming up, like where to position your ship, or to put your force behind you to block incoming shots/enemies for a section, but that stuff is not really skill based as much as it's strategy and memorization, any section where you actually have to use your skill and reflex dodge a bunch of different bullets or enemies all at once is when I just die.
>>
>>12798116
Delta is perfect balance of strategy/memorisation and those frantic sections where you have to be good at dodging. Also, if you're fully kitted it's trivial but good luck learning how to recover.
>>
>>12798116
>How much easier/harder is Delta compared to Final?
To me Final is very inconsistent, lots of sections where nothing happens followed by the most ball busting areas and lack of good checkpoints. Delta has a perfect curve and fair checkpoints
>>
>>12798141
>Also, if you're fully kitted it's trivial but good luck learning how to recover.
Yeah recoveries seem to be by far the hardest part of these games.
>>
>>12798093
Sometimes you can save up a bomb for a particularly hard section. You gain meter for it by having your force touch enemies or absorb bullets.
>>
>>12796757
Final being less dense than the older games is something you learn to enjoy. The difficulty being uneven is tied to the fact there's 100+ ships in the game, some which are really fucking weird like walking mechs or ships stuck with melee weapons.
>>
>>12798673
Dumbing down the core aspect of the game just for some gimmicky ships I haven't unlocked yet is bad game design
>>
>>12798206
At least your chance for survival is higher compared to Gradius since you can control your speed and have a Wave Cannon.

>>12798673
>some which are really fucking weird like walking mechs or ships stuck with melee weapons
The Misty Lady takes the cake on the weirdest ship in the game. A close range Wave Cannon thats not as strong as the Pile Driver one and all of its Lasers are downward attacks just makes it more of a challenge ship.

I got the original arcade R-Type 1cc a couple of weeks ago. The game punishes you so hard for dying its best to reset if you get a death. In theory you can beat the game by hard memo but in practice its too long to do that. One of the things that helped me was having macrostrategies for each stage. Eg in stage 4 I am going to push forward and attack backwards a lot, in stage 5 I barely ever leave the left edge of the screen. Stage 6 is an execution test and stage 7 is deceptively easy, it only has like three different screens before the boss, which is easily cheesed. Stage 8 is just a "hit the clutch shot and dont choke" test

1-3 is easy to get consistently. Memorize 6-8 and have strategy for 4-5. Each run is a slog because of the first three strategies so its better to practice the end more. Your ship will be the same every run so its easy to save state practice. All you need is consistency for each level before you attempt runs.

>At least your chance for survival is higher compared to Gradius since you can control your speed and have a Wave Cannon.
I think that really depends on which checkpoint you are resetting from. But I haven't played Gradius so I don't actually know. There are a few checkpoints, one on stage 2, and one of stage 6 that I have no clue how you could possible recover from if you weren't playing on literal kids mode and got to keep your upgrades.

What R Type you talking about there?
>>
>>12799741
I'm playing the one in the OP. Final.
>>
>>12799789
oh yeah I got to desert themed stage 2 and one of the checkpoints is seemingly impossible there. What a shit game
>>
>>12799790
I think I was on the swamp version of the stage? It's either one up, or one down from the default stage 2 at least. It's the version that has those frog things that shit out endless dragonflies that chase after you. After about halfway through the stage you get to a narrow T section, where in the top left corner sits on of those frogs things. And if you have to recover without any upgrades I just don't see how you can reliably get your force, attach it to your back, and move up the shaft before the frog fills it with the dragonflies and kills you. Then right after you get to an open room with two of those frogs at the bottom, and doing that whole sequence from the T section to the open room, reliably, seems like it must be inconsistent at best. And you'd have to do all of that with just a level 1 force.
