I can't wrap my head around why Sega let so many great gaming franchises die. A lot of them had even become household names and then they just abandoned it. We love to talk about Sega's other mistakes like the 32X or hiring Tom Kalinske, but in my opinion this is another really big one that probably eclipses the other two. Games sell hardware, after all.
>>
Not everything needs to be milked like Sonic and Yakuza. Why can't you be happy with what we have?

>I can't wrap my head around why Sega let so many great gaming franchises die
Because they have a shitton of them. It's easier when you're Nintendo and you can juggle the same five IPs forever and keep the fanbase happy.
>>
>>12795801
Was gonna say something, but this anon basically said it best. Be happy Sega just remembered their Dreamcast era franchises exist now
>>
How have they let them go? They constantly re-release games, and make new ones. The fact is Sega's first-party stuff was never that exciting to begin with. You played Sonic because you had a Sega. If you had Nintendo it'd be Mario.

You can still buy Sonic games.
>>
Nintendo carefully ensured Mario games were of the highest quality.

Meanwhile, Sega gave us picrel in the Alex Kidd sequel.

Sega's been shitting up their IP since the beginning.
>>
>>12795790
That's not what milking means. Call of Duty is milking. Making more entries in a fan favorite franchise every console generation is not milking.
>>
>>12795801
Nintendo has a fuckton of IPs
>>
>>12795820
>How did they let them die?
>The only one I can remember is Sonic
You can't remember the others because they're dead
>>
>>12795861
Yes it is. Not everything needs 20 sequels
>>
>>12795846
>Sega gave us picrel in the Alex Kidd sequel.
That looks like fucking kino
>>
They just announced a Golden Axe anime
>>
>>12795887
That's not anime and it looks like fucking garbage that will kill the franchise beyond what was previously thought possible
>>
>>12795868
They couldn't afford a new Shenmue. What are Sega's other properties and characters? I mean particular to Sega.
>>
>I am bereft of knowledge, intelligence, and creativity, let's have the same conversation we've beaten to death 1000 more times! Perhaps then I can finally feel something! I love when people are just as dumbed down to lowest common denominator just like me!

>>12795762
segas thing was never to keep things going as "a franchise". if they wanted to make a sequel they would but unless it was the designated hogslop it died a peaceful death with maybe one or no sequels, because it didnt need them. the studio would come up with a new idea and make something new. this only really changed after the sammy buyout where the companies entire output was sequelslop or nostalgiaslop and sonic became the designated shitting series for any experimental stuff because they knew itd sell no matter what

Fpbp.

All these franchises? Like the arcade franchises? With arcade sequels most times they didn't do nearly as well as the predecessors and if they did you wouldn't get many out of them before people lost interest. Fighting games might be an exception and Sega kept Virtua Fighter going. Console games are one thing but they kept making Shining games, Panzer Dragoon got 3 games on the Saturn despite not being a big seller.

Arcade games were a different beast, it was better to repackage a similar game that could have passed as a sequel as a completely different game. It makes a lot more sense to do OutRun than Hang On 3: Ferrari Edition if your goal is selling cabinets.

Sega hung on to that arcade mindset for way longer than Nintendo and at the point that switched they were already out of money they could use to make all these potential sequels you're wondering about.

>We love to talk about Sega's other mistakes like the 32X or hiring Tom Kalinske
Tom Kalinske saved Sega. You have your facts wrong or you are trolling.
>>
>>12795978
Yuji Naka and his team saved Sega.
Tom was just opportune enough to suggest a bundle in USA.
>>
is there any doubt their later systems would have done better in the West if they had thrown the western market a bone? People wanted Sonic, and they wanted Streets of Rage.
>>
>>12795865
Sega has more
>>
>>12795901
Alien syndrome, alien storm, altered beast, golden axe, space channel 5, crazy taxi, jet set radio, outrun, hang on, after burner, virtua fighter, spike out, streets of rage, fantasy zone, space harrier.

Reminder that Yuji Naka and Bernie Stolar killed Sega. If it weren't for them Sega would still be in the console race today.

Yuji Caca threw a tantrum and wouldn't give the Sonic X-treme team his NiGHTS engine to implement their game, thus the Sega Saturn had no main-series Sonic games. Bernie enforced the no-2D games policy on the Saturn and priced the Dreamcast $50 less than what Sega could afford.

All Sega consoles were a failure in Japan. Sonic was a failure in Japan. Americans saved Sega. Tom Kalinske saved Sega.

every time i see sonic/sega discussion on 4chan, there is always this rigid black/white extremely reductive thinking to everything. im not sure if its ragebait or if people actually believe this, im probably too autistic to realize. the reality is that sega as a whole was and still is a clusterfuck and mistakes were made on both sides. SoJ were not the genius business masterminds who got sabotaged by the americans, and likewise the americans were not the underdog heroes who singlehandedly saved the company from the incompetent japanese. they had a brief period of success with sonic in the west (which was ostensibly a joint effort, as much as i prefer japanese sonic it would not have sold very well in its unaltered form in the west, see nights), and then the saturn had a brief period of success in japan by having a larger quantity of JRPGs and VNs than the n64 before both consoles got raped by the playstation and sega went back to being a shitter third wheel company like it was before. at the same time though, does that really matter?
>>
>>12796189
>underdog heroes who singlehandedly saved the company from the incompetent japanese.

Americans definitely were Sega's Saviours. North America bought like 90% of all Sega consoles and Sega arcade cabinets.

I can tell that you really didn't study the Arcade industry at all. Americans bought the vast majority of all Sega arcade machines. You know how every debate has someone say, "The Sega Arcade division is what made Sega money!"

Who bought those machines? Americans.

Here's another fun fact you probably don't know. The Americans were the ones that told Sega Japan to make Daytona USA. Sega Japan didn't come up with the idea themselves. The Americans told Sega Japan to make a 3D arcade racing game based on Nascar racing. The Sega Japan Executives originally didn't want to do it and thought a 3D Nascar racing game would fail. They didn't understand American taste at all. Eventually Sega Japan allowed Daytona USA have a "limited release" with a small amount of prototype Daytona USA for testing at some American arcades. The game was a smash hit.

Sega Japan was stunned. There are interviews from Sega Japanese Executives that say they couldn't keep up with demand. There was a 6 month waiting list for arcades to order a single machine. During the 1990s, Sega had to run their arcade factories 24/7 nonstop, and it still wasn't enough to meet the demand of the Americans.

>then the saturn had a brief period of success in japan
Here's the problem. The Saturn being mildly successful in Japan doesn't recover the cost to make the Saturn. It was an expensive machine create and produce. Sega Japan took the profits made from selling consoles and arcades in America, and then dumped the majority of it into the Saturn. Sega NEEDED the Sega Saturn to be a huge success in America and Europe to break even.
>>
>A lot of them had even become household names

No. The only thing Sega has ever created that is a 'household name' is Sonic.
>>
>>12795762

if you just mean under utilized IPs, the fact is that it takes more effort to drop a 'modern game' than you're probably giving credit for.

nobody is programming in assembly or without a software layer anymore. the creative force to make a game has to come from somewhere. And the only reason games like Undertale or Tohou succeed are on their highly exceptional strengths despite their obvious weaknesses.

most games simply aren't good enough to put up with half-assery, there's just too much to chose from in the market now.
>>
>>12796268
>the fact is that it takes more effort to drop a 'modern game' than you're probably giving credit for.
Hyper Bloated triple AAA games that cost billions of dollars like GTA 6 have ruined your brain.

It's perfectly possibly to make a good game on a modest budget. Sega is perfectly capable of releasing more Sonic, Crazy Taxi, Vitua Fighter, Daytona, Streets of Rage, etc games.
>>
>>12796273

you're mis-identifying the scale of the problem. How much do you think each of the IPs you mentioned cost to make from start to launch (lets just leave out post launch for now)?

if they don't make money, or they don't believe they will make money... It is a business, and if it smells even a little like one of those two, no resources will get committed.
>>
>>12796279

The fact you are defending Sega's decisions is hilarious.

You do realize Sega is stupid with handling money right? They nearly went bankrupt three times in their company history despite pulling in billions of dollars. Other Japanese game companies have literally gone on record saying that Sega Japan is one of the worst companies they've ever seen when it comes to being financial responsible.

A shitload of new franchises were created during the 5th gen. Those things are what made the PSX successfull, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo, and on PC things like Quake or Half-Life instead of getting "Doom 3".
It was a new era in tech where new franchises and creativity mattered; meanwhile rehashes from the previous generation were often rejected. For instance some people back then complained that on Nintendo 64 you were only getting "the same games as on SNES but in 3D" rather than something new.

The bottomline is that this worked on N64 because the N64 was for kids; while the rest of the market was for teens and adults who wanted to move on from what they played when they were kids.

This "old franchises" look at the 5th gen is purely a modern point of view. The thing is in modern times "franchises" is the only thing that mattered, publishers don't take risk and rehash the old stuff; and as a result players think that's all that matters and this point of view affects their opinion of old games as well. How many threads has /vr/ got about retards who don't know shit about old games and only played Resident Evil/Zelda/Final Fantasy/Dragon Quest/etc because they feel "obligated" to because of new games coming out? How many people only played Crash/Spyro/Tomb Raider because of their shitty modern remakes/sequels?

You'd have to be seriously afflicted by modern gaming-ism to think and claim that making entirely new games, that CREATIVITY, is a bad thing.
>>
>>12796360
>muh hekkin new franchise is creativity
final fantasy 7?
>>
>>12796368
The vast majority of best selling PSX games were new games or new franchises created in that era; the only rare exceptions being FF7 and MGS (and even then those were new in Europe)
