As much as I appreciate the ambition and production value of MGS1. I didn't enjoy the gameplay, like at all. Some of the boss fights were tedious and there were alot of backtracking in this game. I just played it out of obligation, so I can play MGS2, 3 and etc.
I hope you enjoy meaningless walking around and "gameplay", there's more of that with every new game
>>12795883At least those games have smoother analog control unlike MGS1.
>>12795879I agree. If you want better gameplay, then MGS2 will amaze you. It takes the formula to the peak. Still my favorite game ever.
>>12795968Pac. Man.
>>12795968I already did. Currently playing MGS3.
>>12795879it's not amazing but I think it's an ok overhead action adventure with some gimmicks. I definitely get if you're unimpressed by it but breathlessly coming in to say how crap it is seems kind of unnecessary.
>>12796016Don't get me wrong, I love the aesthetic and atmosphere in MGS1. It's just that ps1 limitation was holding its back. It's obvious that it was made before analog control became an industry standard and it shows.>>12796016I didn't mention anything about Super Mario World.
>>12796016>ai slopKys
>>12796009Lol I was supposed to respond with this.>>12796027
>>12795879MGS1 is a product of its time. When we were kids, we were mind blown by it. I remember everyone at my school and neighborhood loving this game
>>12796125Exactly. Even though there's a GameCube remake that also has it's own problem.Like it doesn't really offer much besides completely breaks the gameplay flow since MGS2 engine doesn't transition well with the original level designs.
these games that rely on breaking new ground story-wise don't age great
>>12795879>I just played it out of obligation, so I can play MGS2, 3 and etc.You shouldn't waste your time playing games you don't like. It will only make you want to complain.
>>12796295But I do like the cast tho. Its just that I didn't have a good time with MGS1 gameplay.
>>12795879MGS1 got mogged by later games but in 1998 it was something special
>>12795879It was amazing for it's time and it will always be a very special game to me. The menus and control scheme can be frustrating though for modern gamers and I would have appreciated if they added an option to skip codec scenes without having to tap tap tap the button until the end. It's still a classic gem and I recently did another playthrough of it, the overall experience is still great.
>>127963341998 was PEAK
>>12795879I agree, but I also think it's more enjoyable than the sequels. Maybe it's just the PSX aesthetic.
>>12795879play vr missions, it made me love the gameplay
>>12796334>>12796337>>12797913We all agree that it's still better than Twin Snakes, right?
>>12795879>needing more than PEAK PS1 gameplayback to /v/ with you
>>12795879You should play MGS1Then play VR missionsThan play MGS1 again
The level design of MGS1 peaks at the very start and drops off afterwards. It keeps on doing the same basic box grid till the end with no cool exterior stealth. The end game is a total waste, literally just one guy in the final real area, the Metal Gear hangar. No kind of difficulty escalation at all, but there sure are lots of codec calls! Despite this, MGS1 is still better than its sequels as it has no tranq gun to trivialize the challenge that is there and the setting is more interesting than Home Depot in MGS2 which is just the most boring Lego shit ever. After that MGS just started ripping off western stealth games to its own detriment, MGS3 is for faggots.
>>12796132Gamecube at least removed the bullshit time sink that is backtracking with the launch key.
>>12799476the indoor setting is better. the thing I dislike about 3 and 5 is the lack of indoors
MGS1 is beautiful.
>>12799701Indoors is better, you're right, but MGS1 could have used at least one more cool ass area like the helicopter pad bit at the start. Always fun to sneak through that area without the radar. That's another problem with these games, the radar is fucking gay, MGS1 is mostly playable without it except for one bullshit part in the second building that you've got to memorize, the room where you find Meryl in the bathroom
>>12799694Backtracking isn't necessarily a problem. The problem with that sequence is that nothing new is added to the areas you backtrack to except like two guards in the Vulcan Raven arena, wow. The story is also so awful at that part. Otacon says, "if you put the key in while it's armed, it'll disarm, and if you put it in while it's disarmed, it'll arm." My first thought was, okay, can we check if it's armed? Well, none of the characters ask that question. So you've got to spend an hour doing this retarded key thing, while listening to a billion boring codec calls, and what do you know, Snake ends up arming the warheads like a retard and it was all according to keikaku from Liquid that there's no guards in the final area. Comically horrible design both mechanically and narratively.
Kojimas obsession with movie shit in games is really annoying. Mgs2-4 gameplay is great when you actually get to play it. MgsV had the right idea even though it was done sloppy
>>12801301>MgsV had the right idea even though it was done sloppyBecause it's literally unfinished. Konami went cold feet after Kojima spent most of the budget on marketing, celebrities and Silent Hill P.T. It was a shit show.
>>12800451They allude to the twist pretty heavily when you've got Liquid and Ocelot loudly talking about>oh yeah Metal Gear is totally armed for real>boy I hope Snake doesn't use those pal keys to shut it down on this terminal right here *wink wink*while the cutscene shows that Ocelot can see Snake standing right outside the door on the security monitor. It's telegraphed a mile away but it's still bad that there's not even a bit with the Colonel or Otacon going>snake, are you sure it's activeand he goes>god yes I just heard them talking about it jeez shut upor anything like that.
>>12801596Liquid tracking Snake's movements the whole time is another horrible part of the story. You mean that in this stealth game, I wasn't actually sneaking by or fooling anyone, and the only reason I survived is because the villains wanted me to? Wow, thanks, I really feel accomplished as the player now
>>12801639>and the only reason I survived is because the villains wanted me to? Wow, thanks, I really feel accomplished as the player nowTo be fair, even if Snake died immediately to the first guard, the FOXDIE he was injected with at the start would infect/transmit to the first soldier who killed/touched Snake's body and would spread itself among the rest of the genome soldiers eventually making it's way to their intended targets. Thus, killing the bosses for him after death. So, I guess you could say his mission was a success as soon as he arrived at Shadow Moses.
>>12801639It's also dumb that Mei Ling is immediately able to work out that Deepthroat's codec calls are coming from inside Shadow Moses but somehow she's not able to see that "Miller"s are as well
>>12800451The PAL key isn't the only backtracking you have to do, it's kind of annoying how often the game makes you do it.>you can go back and get the Nikita launcher immediately after the tank fight, but most people wouldn't think to do it until reaching nuke storage B2>game won't let you run back to get the PSG-1 until the Sniper Wolf fight I get that this is so they can have Meryl get captured, but it's still shit since Snake gets captured immediately after the fight anyway>have to make the run all the way back to the comm tower again after getting captured>climbing up to the REX hangar control room, dropping the PAL key, then going back down to get it out of the drainage ditch, then running back up to the control room again>all the additional back and forth with the PAL key in the freezer & furnaceWithout the backtracking the game would be 2 hours long at most.
>>12795879>alot of backtracking in this gameI played this game recently and I have no idea what you're talking about.
>>12801859This is like 10 minutes worth of backtracking altogether
>>12802027Did you at least finish it?
