Assuming it's a working tv, the process is to pull the circuit board out, cleaning, check all important capacitors in-circuit, replace marginal/bad ones, reinstall and make physical & service menu adjustments. Often repairs are needed but that's a different topic. I have a plastic bag full of bad components pulled from TVs.
so this 13" I found a couple months ago was an easy clean up. I debated opening it up to dust off the internals, but I decided not risking breaking some plastic tab. looked through the vents with a flashlight and it looked clean. I'm sure theres a thin layer of dust. has to be after 23 years, but I dont think its worth the effort.screens immaculate and it has 9,400 hours on it. my superstation one is arriving tuesday so I can check it over and calibrate it with 240p test suite then.

Someone finally added a different rebrand of the mystery ID plate missing Insignia flatscreen I've had for a while to CRT database a few months ago, yipee. I have the vaguest chance of getting a remote and maybe into rhe service menu for this thing now.

Because if you aren't putting out 15khz, then you need something to convert it to that, which will work with everything you put into it, but will be the same 480i on the crt. That will not look near as sharp as a games original resolution and refresh rate. Sending out 15khz can be a bit of work, but its worth it on linux, on windows they will bother you about stupid shit all the time, telling you the resolution is too low, or wanting to update, its so stupid.

the downside to using low end hardware to emulate games is that the shaders aren't good. your limited to using zfast and crt pi because the hardware is not powerful enough..the only way to get a good picture with a raspberry pi is by using a CRT. all the shaders suck due to the underpowered raspberry pi

I have two like-new looking white 9 inch trinitrons I got deom an e recycling place. Out of all my crts they would be the last I expected to fail, but one went out and both kind of having a slight acrid smell coming from them. It's acrid but it also kinda has that new electronic smell. Anyway the one that failed still turns on, just no display. When it failed it was kind of like a light bulb when it flickers a bit then just goes out. Also months later it worked again but eventually went out. Is it probably a capacitor issue? And is recapping that hard? Someone pill me on that

Main issues are finding the appropriate circuits on the board (power, H and V deflection) then narrowing down the bad caps. They don't always look bad visually but you might be lucky. I use LCR tweezers to measure in circuit. At minimum I would get an electric desoldering pump ($10 AliExpress) and normal soldering supplies.

how bad are black bars on a CRT? How long would it take for uneven phosphor wear to become noticeable?

Manifests as power issues or raster distortion.Usually it's only a handful of caps in areas that run hot/see a lot of voltage that tend to be problematic.I don't do 100% recaps of boards. It's pointless and adds risk. Targeting certain circuits (power, deflection, crt) is the way.
