Thief got an update on GOG a bit ago that updated NewDark, added full controller support, and also added in a radial menu that slow down time to select weapons and items that you can use on kb+m by holding Tab.
Also, you can choose at startup if you want to play Thief Gold or the original release version of The Dark Project. I'm playing TDP now because I never played it and I didn't feel like doing any of the add-on missions.

This feels like a huge update, almost like a stealth remastered port.
>>
>>12797140
Are the Gold edition extra missions really that bad?
>>
>>12797143
Not really except for Thieves Guild. Mage Towers isn't bad but like Thieves Guild it takes like an hour, and this time one of the Talismans is tied to it.
Also I'm curious to see the differences to the Lost City which should have less humans and more crab people.
>>
>>12797140
a radial menu that slows down time? the fuck?
>>
>>12797181
It's a mod to NewDark created by a ttlg.com forum member.
>>
>>12797143
Mage's Guild is probably the worst of them but they're all decent to good like the opera house mission.
>>
>>12797140
This kind of game is entirely pointless when you can spam quicksave and quickload
>>
>>12797143
>>12797245
I don't get why mage's guild is hated
>>
>>12797249
show some restraint and don't use em
>>
>>12797252
It's just a mostly symmetrical and boring mission outside of some of the gimmicks in the towers
>>
>>12797252
the level itself isn't bad as much as the lore. randomly introducing a generic mages guild into the hammer keeper pagan trinity was retarded.
>>
>>12797140
it's really dumb that no one has ever made a gold lite mod. nobody who plays thief wants the original shitty textures or the absence of the little big room in the sword.
>>
>>12797278
The devs designed the whole game with these save functions in place. Any "gotcha" trial-and-error moments in the levels becomes 10x worse without these functions.
>>
>>12797338
show some restraint, get good, and get over it
>>
>>12797340
>get good
at this game? anybody can with quicksaves
driving a car without using the brakes doesn't make you a good driver, it makes you a retard
>>
>>12797343
How do you think it should've been? that if someone hears or sees you it's game over and you need to start the mission from the beginning?
>>
>>12797343
it's obvious to anyone you're speaking from a very crutched experience
>>
>>12797245
Nah, the worst is Thieve's Towers, IMO
>>
>>12797359
>How do you think it should've been?
Autosaves placed by the developers throughout the levels when you complete main objectives. Trivial solution.
>>
>>12797140
>and also added in a radial menu that slow down time to select weapons and items that you can use on kb+m by holding Tab
Holy based (if this applies to items). Since when was this a thing? Going through the items was always a slog.
>>
>>12797553
If they can add radial menus that slow down time, why can't they add actual cool shit? Those menus are for console slobs.
>>
>>12797559
Have you played the game? Do you know how tedious it is to cycle through the shitload of items in your inventory, that seemingly goes out of order every now and then? And what cool shit, do you not play fanmissions?

I press 1-0 on my big keyboard with my wife
>>
>>12797570
that works for your main equipment but not every random item you get. It was probably designed as a heavyhanded console feature but it will still be nice for random items every now and then.
>>
>>12797570
Retard thinks I'm talking about weapons instead of the items
>>
>>12797565
>>12797574
>And what cool shit

But unironically something like split screen coop, but it doesn't HAVE to be that radical. I can only think of a couple of games from that era that would be absolutely saved if you had a proper weapon switch.
>>
>>12797395
Thieves' Guild was a pretty cool concept mission with the sewers and tunnels under the city leading to some mansions and other places. Wasn't that well executed compared to what fan mission authors did later on but it wasn't as boring as Mage mission. Some people's problems were there weren't maps (even rough sketch ones) for some of those underground areas so they got lost.
>>
>>12797695
The biggest fundamental problem with the thieves' guild is threefold.
1. You start in the middle of the sewers. West, you end up at one manor. North, you end up at another. Whether it's Donnel or Reuben's, I don't give a fuck, and neither does most anybody.
2. Going west first? Oops, no key. Backtrack all the fucking way back to neutral and then go north to get the key from the north manor that opens the safe to complete the vase objective in the west manor, if you lost this coinflip then fuck you.
3. Oh, playing on expert? Did I say you find the key to the safe in the north manor? Nah, you find it in a secret compartment under some boob underboss's fucking fireplace that you can hardly fucking see even when you're paying attention. This shit is diabolically out of sight and you're supposed to spot it. Too fucking bad most players start on expert mode, making this pain in the ass mission even shittier.
>>
>>12797249
>muh quicksave ruins vidya games
Console-cuck babby shitting his diapy because Miyamoto isn't hamstringing with forced-replay mechanics, lmao.
>>
>>12797424
>Autosaves placed by the developers throughout the levels when you complete main objectives. Trivial solution.

That would make sense if the levels were linear console-cuck dogshit. On the adult's platform of choice, the computer, there's a little thing we like to call "player autonomy", where an adult determines where he wishes to save, and when.

So grow up and grow a pair. It's one of the best video games ever made, and your autismal retardery over quick saves is never going to change that fact, kiddo. So, like he said, get good or get over it, because you're very clearly neither.
>>
>>12797424
I tend to be closer to your viewpoint than the average save stating pc chud but I think with the way thief is designed free saving *mostly* makes sense. you're presented with fairly open ended levels where dying is rare, either a spike of obvious danger or you badly fucking up and compounding getting spotted. basically the devs are presenting you with a dnd scenario and letting you have at it.
if thief were a game where death was routine and unavoidable and you needed to create layer checkpoints to avoid constantly getting knocked back I'd have a different opinion but it's not really that sort of game.
>>
>>12797249
So I guess quake is pointless now too then, huh? What a retard.
>>
>>12797776
anyone serious about quake or doom plays levels without mid level saves. the levels where that isn't reasonable is usually garbage trash like evilution.
>>
It kind of bothers me that people tend to regard being caught as the end of stealth games. You're given lots of tools, including a sword, use them. Ghosting is cool and all but you're missing out on an entire side of the game. Escaping detection is also fun and makes for a narratively interesting experience.
>>
>>12797803
while I get your point I don't think I could ever tisk tisk someone for doing that. most stealth games don't have very interesting survival or escape mechanics, and going through killing feels sloppy/cheesy. if you're really gameplay focused and just want the meat, saving around stealth segments makes sense.
for instance mgs3, I had a lot more fun with the game playing it on an emulator where I could savestate every major stealth encounter and treat it as its own self contained puzzle.
>>
>>12797820
if the game clamps its teeth around your neck and kills you instantly for being spotted, it's borderline linear dogshit. thief has a lot of options for escape, and so do stealth games in general if you just take the "run away and hide" option, but that doesn't mean a player shouldn't atleast fucking try to boil their own noodle for a bit to achieve a happy middle ground on their own terms. no one tells anybody to reload their save instantly the moment they're caught, but it's the default phenomenon when failed npc normalfags who post on /v/ try to shit on this series.
>>
>>12797820
Shit. Mgs3 in particular gives you so many guns, explosives, systems to fuck with the ai and environmental reactivity, it's a downright sin to play on european extreme.
>>
>>12797834
it can be fun to fuck around with the weapons but it has a low ceiling, you just rofl stomp everything with various chaos and either jog on to the level exit or hang around. if you're plugged into stealth waiting for the reset is pretty tedious.
>>
>>12797874
note I'm not talking about ghosting here just the full alert, reinforcements shit storm

isn't that just the Nightdive demaster? I wouldn't touch that shit for any love of money
all I want is a version of TDP that isn't fucked on modern machines with EAX support. all of the ports using Gold as a base has been a mess
>>
>>12797915
Nightdive? More like shitdive. Y'nawsayin? Sheeeiit. Fuck that bunk ass demaster.
>>
>>12797732
>thieftard mad that his game is easier than his mum
seethe
>>
>mad about quicksaving
1. Don't use them.
2. Save every few minutes like most PC games require/recommend since the days of King's Quest 1.
3. Quicksaving gives you the freedom to explore and experiment; it is the ultimate expression of the superiority of PC gaming over consoles.
>>
>>12797915
>isn't that just the Nightdive demaster?
No, it's a free update for GOG copies of Thief Gold and is the original game running on NewDark like most retail releases for over a decade.
>all I want is a version of TDP that isn't fucked on modern machines with EAX support.
That's what this is. Just launch and select TDP on the launcher pop-up thing.
>>
>>12797915
nah that's what's so funny about this, gog cucked nightdive big time by releasing a definitive version of the game without any nonsense "upgraded visuals" and even with the original TDP included as a bonus. I've no idea if they even contacted them behind the scenes before making this absolute power move but it would be hilarious if they didn't
>>
>>12798302
the update didn't happen automatically for me though I can't tell if it was intentionally done or not. this update really happened between July and August, but it was done with absolutely no announcement or hype.
>>
>>12797776
Yes it is. PCasuals aren't ready for the truth that any game with arbitrary saving is trivial and has an unfinished design.
>>
>>12797143
Only neckbeards hate those missions, they're pretty good, very atmospheric, I've played fan missions that were way more obtuse than Thieves Guild and for some reason those fan missions are praise to the highest degree possible
>>
>>12798305
I was lucky enough to have it dropped on me via the youtube algorithm, practically minutes after the announcement video was published. Didn't occur to me that it was a rather low key release,
I would've been shouting from the rooftops about it had I realized
>>
I can see why we don't have Thief generals anymore.
>>
>>12797915
the new version is too polished, I don't like it
>>
>>12797143
Compared to other levels in the game, yes. Compared to the last few levels of the game, not at all. Compared to many other games, absolutely not. The only truly bad missions are unfortunately the final few where you can tell they were really rushed
>>
>>12797249
just link your quick save and load buttons to a shock collar. every time you save it dials up the intensity one notch, and every time you load it zaps you. this should deliver the desired effect for you, no?
>>
>>12797731
meanwhile we have you shitting your diapy over nintendo out of nowhere
>>
>>12797249
I don't really agree, but it might be neat to tie saves to levels so you only get like 3 per or something.
Make it a usable object or something. A wax cylinder data recorder.

The absolute state of the mustard race
>>
>>12797803
The Alert phase has to be as fun as the stealth phase, I think this is one of the biggest downfalls of Thief, it just isn't as thrilling as sneaking around and sometimes it just highlights the limitations of the AI.
Stuff like the blackjack only knocking out guards when they are unaware of you or are blinded makes it flow really poorly in Expert, which is the best way to play the game.
>>12797834
I think you can still mess with most of those in European Extreme since you only get a game over if you're seen by a guard, so explosives are fine to use as long as you're well hidden.
>>
>>12797707
the first thing you hear when you enter the sewers are two thieves talking about the fact that the vase is one guy's safe but the other one is holding the key. you are supposed to put two and two together to figure out where are you supposed to go first. also iirc the fireplace compartment is holding a special loot objective item on expert, not the key.
>>
Well I used joy2key and it was flawless
So I am not really all that excited about this
>>
>>12797707
I missed the extra loot objective the first time I played this mission (I played on Expert blind because I didn't want to miss out on fun objectives) and ran around for like 40 minutes doublechecking everything and blackjacking every guard but still had to look it up online. Another problem with every new mission and fan mission is that the maps never mark where you are or where you have been, it's just a sheet of paper.
>>
>>12797915
all I care about is the supposed new campaign, and hopefully a new level editor from this century; I do not have the patience or the brain for DromED.
>>
>>12797140
>added full controller support, and also added in a radial menu that slow down time to select weapons
fucking disgusting. these faggots can't stop ruining these classics. "game preservation" my ass

bullshit
Atari would never allow for the expense. The best you can hope for is a mod and fan mission manager that pulls from a GoG mirror.
>>

There's going to be an OST for the upcoming graphic novel. I lost interest in the comic book when I learned that it's done by the same people behind that LoK story, but the OST might be cool.
>>
>>12801049
It's just a community mod they bundle it with. Just like newdark. If you want the game "preserved" you're going to need to play it on windows 95. But that would be retarded.
>>
>>12797249
that's why you play the game as an arcade game by not using them. i pretty much just use the save feature as a way to get to my favourite missions without playing through the whole game again
