Gee mister, no thanks. If I want an emulator, I'll download it on my gaming PC, thank you very much.

then why dont you go post in those threads? theres even a general. ya homosexual

it took six days for my SS1 to arrive at usps distribution center in queens ny from china using 4px. I thought it would take weeks from what I heard. only took 10 minutes to clear customs. will probably be at my door in 2 days.

the newer PCs are having them built in iirc. it lets them use older pc applications

Had my SSO for a while now and it's pretty much replaced all my 5th gen and back consoles.

After messing around a lot these are my go to controllers depending on games. I LOVE the Mod Retro controller, really hope the wireless rumble update comes out soon. The Pro 3 has the best d pad for platformers and action games in production right now. Love how clicky it is. The M30 is my fighting game controller, works great for circle inputs. The M30 is also my go to for TG16 games as well.
>>
>>12799463
nice. i have m30 i used wired and wired xbox 360 as my daily drivers
>>
>>12799471
If I'm going wired I go to SNAC adapters and oringial controllers.

I thought that m64 controller had a shit dpad, but you're probably use to shit dpads since youre like 8shitdo
>>
>>12799493
Agreed. Talking about snake oil is gay as hell.
>>
>>12799496
It does but they have a revised one they mail out to you that makes it pretty good.

What do you think is a good modern D pad?
>>
>>12799497
you just talked about it gay boy
>>
>>12799501
Can you prove that in the court of law?
Didnt think so. back off me, BACK THE FUCK OFF ME
>>
>>12799498
for NES and SNES I use the Classic Controllers from their mini conoles and the NSO controllers. I also have an iBuffalo back from 10+ years ago before they went to shit.

every other nes and snes style pad I have tried had the same problem I had with every 8bitdo I tried, so if I didn't have all the controllers listed above I would probably just use playstation controllers (ps1, ds2, ds3, ds4). yeah it doesn't feel "right" playing nintendo with them, but atleast you don't get false diagonals and ghost inputs.
>>
>>12799510
To each their own but for me Sony never made a decent dpad. I really like clicky style which is what the Pro 3 has and I love it. Just not for circle movements in fighting games.
>>
>>12799513
but does it sometimes press down when you're pressing right?
>>
>>12799514
Pro 3? Never. Have had it on other 8bitdo that I returned but the Pro 3 has been perfect. To be clear the Pro 3 fails the contra test of pushing down and kinda rocking the dpad but a regular SNES pad fails that test. I don't get why people use that as the benchmark
>>
>>12799370
No, a generic, reconfigurable accelerator.
>>
>>12798994
B-but they said multiple phases…I thought each phase would be about a month…?
>>
>>12799463
>Mod Retro controller, really hope the wireless rumble update comes out soon
It’s out

>>12799496
Yes, both of my pro controllers had shit dpads. Requested replacements for them and the new pads work just fine so far (not getting any false inputs in The New Tetris or Killer Instinct Gold, but I’ve barely put any time on them so far)
>>
>>12800448
It's not out, not out for Bluetooth connections anyways
>>
>>12799475
The problem is that those controllers are all at least 30 years old.
>>
>>12798761
Is there a way for random wallpapers to be selected from a folder every time I power on or reboot?
>>
>>12800543
what's bad about that?
>>
>>12800546
yeah that exists. theres one for loading a random one at boot, and one to load one everytime the menus is open
>>
>>12800598
Sauce for random at boot? Not having much luck
>>
>>12800452
Ok, I thought you were talking about the Pro controller. Wired and wireless rumble both now work with the M64 Pro controllers.
>>

Using a snes coded controller to play sega games should be a crime, mainly 3d analog and dreamcast.
>>
>>12800546

I think it's already built in. You make a wallpapers folder and press F1 until one of them shows up then it picks one every time the main menu loads. I always just use the grid.

Not him but you pretty much need SNAC for light guns. Also not all controllers have the same latency via wired USB but that goes for original hardware to some degree as well (especially PlayStation)

Sadly it's the only platform that offers decent CD-i/3DO support. Thankfully I'm about to change that by vibecoding some DVC support into SAME_CDi, but it's been a fucking bitch having to validate bugs without real hardware. (MiSTer has its own fair share of CD-i bugs, so the core isn't perfect.)
>>
>>12801172

Why do some people ITT think FPGA isn't emulation at all? SiSTer's CD-i core referenced MAME's driver a lot, and I wouldn't be surprised if most of SiSTer's arcade cores were direct MAME ports.

FPGA is 100% emulation,
this is why they come with a compatibility list.

computer illiterates just think that because the emulation happens on a programmable chip, somehow it is not,

>Why do some people ITT think FPGA isn't emulation at all?
Because most gaymers are retarded and technologically-illiterate, meaning companies like Analogue can just straight up lie in their marketing and people will not only believe it, but parrot it as gospel until the end of time.
>>
>>12801517
>this is why they come with a compatibility list.
That's a great thing! Helps me figure out whether or not certain software emus benefit from any improvements on the SiSTer side of things. I know for a fact that SAME_CDi is capable of not only supporting DVC, but doing so in a way that allows plenty of headroom for things like fast forwarding, rewind, and runahead.
>>12801521
I've noticed this same sentiment cropping up around recompilation projects too, with some people outright saying they're "native" ports. The whole point of a recomp is that it's still translating instructions, wheras a decomp has no such instructions to translate. (Decomps have helped out immensely for Recomps that needed mod support, though.)
>>
>>12801521
At least Modretro states FPGA is emulation

>>
>>12798996
One of main reasons to use FPGA is not actually for accuracy, but zero latency fully synchronized audio and video output. If a PC had a FPGA but the output had to be routed through standard pc sound and graphics output it would defeat one of the main reasons to have FPGA
>>
just got my Mister this week.
Best device to play 2D games on my CRTs. Low latency (not that i can tell), accurate (modern emulators are too), but most of all: easy to hook up to my CRTs.

Also fewer options in terms of shaders is relaxing, just pick out of the few configs that exist instead of the endless options + parameter tweaking, less time wasted on shaders.
Also i've never seen Gameboy games look as good as the build in core shaders on the mister core, although it should be 100% reproduce-able in Retroarch.

I did realize i'll keep playing 3D games on emulators though, I like uprezzing 3D games and then downsampling them back to 1x or 2x native res, Mister cant do that.

Also Mister is nice for playing some systems that i normally wouldnt bother setting up the emulator for, like Arcade systems or PC-Engine CD-i or 3DO. I know its probably just 1 click in Retroarch but i dont like Retroarch.

Been playing Merio 64 on my Superstation One with the Mod Retro Pro controller and having a great time. Using the 94+ core which as I understand it over clocks the CPU, RSP, and memory. I know Mario 64 doesn't have a lot of slowdown but i'm playing using the new SM64 H2X patch that makes the game run at 640×240. I think it's similar to what Analogue 3D horizontal rendering option does but to my eyes the patch looks better then whatever the Analogue 3D is doing.

On a side note, does anyone know of a test rom for n64 or a way to see what the CPU/RSP/Memory is running at? I'd just like to confirm what each core is doing.

Just having a FPGA plugged into your PC would not be as beneficial as having a dedicated device, like >>12801975 said, while it can be much easier to code an emulator for a FPGA (assuming it can reasonably fit on it) because a FPGA can naturally run things in parallel while software emulation cannot (e.g. it can run the CPU, GPU, sound hardware, etc of a system at the same time like thry did on real hardware while software emulation has to run them one at a time and add delays to make them sync up) and it can be more accurate assuming the core was developer well, it's not magically going to be more accurate just because it's on a FPGA, you would not be getting many of the input and output latency benefits.

The reason SNAC adds zero additional input latency is because it's wired directly to pins on the FPGA, which in turn would get internally directly connected to the controller inputs on the emulated system. There is no additional layer translating a USB controller to the FPGA, which can add latency. Even on the MiSTer using a USB or bluetooth controller has more latency than SNAC, though there are ways to heavily reduce it if your controller supports it, but never match using real hardware on SNAC. Even USB adapters to use your original controllers on a PC would add latency because they have to translate the original signals to USB commands, and they might not work with 3rd party or special controllers, it would be as bad if not worse than just using USB controller.

Output is the same, the FPGA can directly output the video signal, on a PC it would have to go through your GPU, which means additional processing, as well as the latency of a modern screen.

While in theory you could bypass these by having something like a FPGA PCIe card with it's own inputs and outputs, but at that point all you PC is doing is providing it power so it would be pointless.

The CDi core might not be that new but DVC support is. Also I would not shrug it off as "MiSTer has its own fair share of CD-i bugs", nearly no software CD-I emulators even have DVC support at all, but the core is leagues more accurate than any current software emulator. The bugs are generally really intricate small things, the dev of the CD-I core is very adamant about attempting to find every tiny fragment of inaccurate behavior and perfecting it.

>>12802362
Literally nobody, just another thing that the seething poorfags love to bring up as if everyone insists that FPGAs don't emulate left and right. Literally the only one who does that is Analogue in their BS marketing, a stunt that many Mister devs have called out. And as you can see in >>12802372 they aren't even capable of reading comprehension, they try to twist any comparison of FPGA vs software emulation as "You are claiming FPGS are not emulation!"

>>12802564
Many of the cores have composite blend options, if not also other filter options.

>>12802576
>you know this shit is a scam when it has a compatibility list
I guess every flashcart ever is a scam then, oh, and every software emulator too. In fact, even real hardware is a scam according to you, since the slim PS2 had a compatibility list of some games that didn't work on it that worked fine on the original.

I can't tell a difference between a good RF controller with USB dongle and SNAC as far as input lag goes. While I'm fucking old and I'm sure my reaction times aren't what they used to be o cans till easily feel lag on cheap flat screens so I'd say I'm still pretty sensitive to input lag

that's your argument.... really?

if you want to use original hardware so much, it is understandable,
then fucking use the original gun on an original NES.

if you don't care about the shape of the thing you are shooting with, and you only care about the gameplay and the game being fun,
then you could use one of the many lightguns that already exist for pc
aliexpress is full of them.

the gun can be used in all emulators, in every game that requires a gun

so I don't know whatever the fuck point you are trying to make there

>>12803653

>>
>>12803679
>>12803704
Likely not unless you are doing frame-perfect speedrunning techs, even then I am not sure. It likely WOULD matter if you wanted to use light guns however, though you would also need a CRT for that.

SNAC also lets you use any original accessory that plugged into the controller port, people have used it for the active shutter 3D glasses the SMS and Famicom had for example. USB adapters are unlikely to work with them either, they are generally are designed to support a specific device, usually the original controller, they can't just support anything you plug into them.

>>12803774
>then you could use one of the many lightguns that already exist for pc
>aliexpress is full of them.
I see you never tried one of these things, those are basically overly-elaborate Wiimotes, they suck. Even the expensive ones that use full image recognition instead of just IR tracking can have accuracy and drifting problems, and require a computer doing the processing.

>so I don't know whatever the fuck point you are trying to make there
Clearly, the point that you don't know shit and think any crap your poor ass saw on aliexpress is the same as using original hardware, or even decent 3rd party hardware.

>why bitch and moan and complain?
Why be retarded and post shit you clearly don't know about? Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and to remove all doubt.

>>12803912
What makes you think I don't also have original hardware zoomie? Unlike you I was alive when it was the latest hardware, and I still kept it. It's a hell of a lot more convenient to have a box that takes the place of dozens of my consoles and acts as an everdrive/ODE and several other enhancements for them, especially ones that are a mess to setup like the 32X.

>>12803953
Yeah, he has real hardware, pretty sure multiple models. Some later models apparently had issues with earlier games because of the BIOS.
>>
the migration script from https://github.com/Natrox/MiSTer_Utils_Natrox/tree/main was a godsend. just plug in an sdcard in a usb reader into your mister, run it, uncheck any too-huge games folders you dont want copied at usb 2.0 speeds like ps1, and now you got another mister card with all your settings and updates ready to plug into another mister device.

took like 45 minutes to migrate, then 8 minutes to copy all my ps1 chds from my pc and now my card is ready for my superstation one thats getting delivered tomorrow
>>
>>12804076

That's exactly the problem I'm having with certain games too, makes a few "bugs" hard to verify against real hardware recordings since even those can vary.

I think I'm pretty keen at detecting lag since I'm both autistic and psychic. I have two of those shitty ibuffalo controllers that are no longer made that're low lag and I still notice a very slight difference between those and snac. Not anything to give a shit about, but it's there even if only my someone of my cunning and calibur can notice it. Snac is mainly good though because original controllers are just soo much better, as long as you can get them in solid condition or fixed up /w new membranes and shit like tht. Although, unless you're using light guns, you might consider getting reflex adapt which is still very low lag but is more versatile than snac. Version two of it drops pretty soon like within a month I think
>>
>>12804240
> might lose a single frame
At that point you might as well just use an emulator from 2003. To be clear one frame is a big deal. Also, its not just about video out. Its about audio synchronization as well. The sound and graphics devices on a PC are separate and un-synchronized. With FPGA audio and video are in perfect lock-stop.
>>
>>12805297
>The sound and graphics devices on a PC are separate and un-synchronized. With FPGA audio and video are in perfect lock-stop.
Passthrough could be instant with the right design. Of course you could "add" this to a standard PC motherboard.

And it doesn't have to be limited to games. Different applications could use an FPGA to accelerate their workloads.

NTA but rather than have a ultra-specific niche FPGA slot on a motherboard, it would be easier just to make it a PCIe card. They already exist, ones that come in a M.2 form factor too.
>>
Just got my SuperStation in the mail today. Any good resources for finding good roms or basic stuff to know going forward?
>>
>>12806018
The M.2 form FPGA is 100% useless as it has no audio or video output which forces you to go through the worthless PC video and audio hardware. At that point its practically no different to software emulation. The pcie card is more promising, but you would still need to had a HDMI and sound output to the FPGA card.

Don't bother with the update script, get update_all, it will handle bios and arcade roms for you.

Look for no-intro vrified sets for roms and redump verified sets for disk based games, don't just download any random rom or disk image.

I haven't even fucked with PS1 games yet. Don't see much reason to unless you can play homebrew that requires extra RAM like the WIP Mario 64 port. I guess memory card management and saving would be more convenient too. I already have a PS1 with an xStation.
>>

It would make more sense for it to be its own platform, many companies manage to do essentially the same thing already. Mu Commodore 64 Ultimate is just some computer that runs / manages an FPGA, the Mister is the same deal. These are hobby projects.
>>
>>12806107
using update all breaks the ss1 specific shit that isnt part of the main mister releases. you should totally use update all and treat it as mister though. just know you wont be able to use the ps1 snac port controllers to control the menu and yo'll have to flip a dipswitch and edit mister.ini to connect to a crt, and console mode might no longer work
>>
>>12806140
I have a Mister and a PS1 with a X Station install. I prefer the mister for ps1 games. The mister has optical audio out which is really really nice. Also the ps1 core has over clocking options, been playing Brightis a lot lately and the OC settings really clean up the FPS drops.
>>
>>12806215
You do not have to flip a dip switch to connect to a CRT with SSO. I use the D Sub port on the back to component cables and just change the ini to component out and it works great

>>
>>12806140
>Don't see much reason to unless you can play homebrew that requires extra RAM like the WIP Mario 64 port
Huh? It has nothing to do with homebrew, or extra RAM, which is useless really and likely will only ever be supported by that one game, and causes instability in others.

I was saying that because the SS1 ships with an open source BIOS that is incredibly minimal in what it can do, and I think has compatibility issues with some games. Legally they can't ship it with Sony's BIOS but it's obvious many would want to replace it with a real PSX bios.

Also have a PS1 with a PSIO here

>>12806215
Without update_all though you would need to hunt down the bioses for every other non-PSX system yourself, as well as setup all the arcade games yourself. (And this is ignoring any other features you might want like Zaparoo, wallpapers, game manuals, alternate cores, cheats, and shitloads of others)

>>12806445

Currently the GBA core does not have link cable support, it needs to be rewritten for higher accuracy. You can link most other systems that supported it like GB/GBC or PSX though.

new m64 update, they finally let video settings save and added low latency
The low latency was desperately needed, it feels as good as original hardware now (on an oled tv). On integer scaling mode I noticed screen tearing, but on the other modes it went away. Maybe this is the equivalent of vsync off, but I'm not sure.

I did the whole emudriver thing for years, it sucks when compared to mister. And yeah I'd say anyone with one who doesn't connect it to a crt is missing out on one of the main advantages that it offers

>>12807931

Mister's is very simple vs pc software emulators. The main menu is almost nothing except a few remap options, scripts and picking games. The core menus usually have a decent selection of things you can customize, all the important stuff that you'd find in Retroarch most used cores. Hardware emulation makes unnecessary alot of the stuff you'd find in pc emulators. On a side note, mister just works and it works really fucking well, unlike retroarch which I used for years and it can be such a pain in the ass in so many ways and it's really a buggy piece of shit that always finds a way to act up, even when you thought you finally had everything perfected once and for all.
>>
>>12808147
yeah, just getting something close to mister's default takes a lot of fiddling in RA and you have to make sacrifices to get good glitchless audio and smooth video. you usually end up running games not at their original speed if you dont have a vrr screen.

and then you have to tweak runahead on a per game basis, fucking pausing and frame stepping after pushing a button, then looking up how much native input lag the game originally had. fuck that shit.
>>
>>12808153
also I bet I've saved money playing on my fucking 10 watt mister these past 8 years than emulating on my fucking 800 watt pc even though I paid 3x what a mister costs today

Well, I would say it's far less confusing than RA's, but that's not a high bar since RA's UI is horrible. MiSTer docent' really try to go for looks at all, it's UI is as barebones and minimal as it gets (especially since it's intended to be used on CRTs so you can't have too much tiny details) and is basically just large pixelated text. It basically looks like picrel.

You CAN have wallpapers that can be pretty high res (which is present in this screenshot) and you can change the default font (which I think was also done in this screenshot, this looks slightly more curved than the default one) but in general without some kind of frontend, which a few people have worked on, it's not going to look fancy. Again, it's not going for fancy, it's going for pure functionality.

I think the SS1 either now ships with, or is going to and will be a free download (even for MiSTer users, not just for the SS1) a "console mode" UI that will look a lot better, I know there is a beta of that, but I don't recall if it's fully out yet.

Zaparoo also released a frontend recently that looks a lot fancier, can have boxart and such like some modern frontends. Keep in mind that the DE-10 Nano was intended for FPGA development and the ARM CPU on it is very very underpowered, I think it might lag if you try to load hundreds or even thousands of cover art at once.
>>
>>12808173
A screenshot from the Zaparoo frontend, supposedly, I haven't tried using it myself.

It's CPU is a Dual-core 800MHz ARM Cortex-A9 pro, hardly anything impressive these days, it's about on-par with the Raspberry Pi 2 from 2015, but it's hardly something too weak to at least display a UI like that. Don't forget that the CPU, on top of the GUI, is also handling all the background tasks like the updater, the remote access, the FTP, the SSH, and doing all the file management (inclosing loading of ROMs/disk images) while the FPGA core is purely acting like the emulated systemm and it has 1GB of DDRR3 RAM. It's not going to out-emulate a modern Pi in software emulation (There was an attempt to get CPS-3 in software on it, it ran in slow motion), but you aren't dealing with an ancient Commodore64 level CPU either.

Where it would probably chug would be if you tried to make it load hundreds of even thousands of that box art at once I think. Again, I haven't tried using these UIs yet. I think I would need a bigger SD card if I were to download boxart for the thousands of games I have on it, enabling the manual database already almost took up the rest of my card, and I have a 500gb card in mine.

Here are screenshots of the SuperStation1 console mode beta for example.
>>
>>12808192
I've heard that there was an experimental DC core that used ARM on the side, thought it was an interesting usage of both hardware and software emulation.
>>
>>12808193
Yeah, a "hybrid core" as it was called, not a new concept, it was proposed before back when people assumed N64 or PSX would be impossible. Problem is on top of the fact that you are using partial software emulation, it's very very hard to keep timings in check this way (especially when the CPU is doing many other things at the same time). This is in fact why many PC emulators like Dolphin or PCSX2 have heavily depreciated their multi-core features and disabled them by default when they used to be touted as a game-changing performance enhancer for emulation. Even purely in software with two cores dedicated just to the emulator it was still very very hard to keep timings accurate between the two and not have them go out of sync and crash. I can't imagine how much insanely harder it would be to pull that off with instead of two dedicated CPU cores, a FPGA and a CPU, while the CPU is also juggling a zillion other tasks, including reading the disk image that the FPGA and CPU are emulating together.

Yeah, real convincing argument there. I just don't like them anymore because their support is ass and while the rest of the controller is good, their d-pads suck. I switched to a Gulikit controller for the better d-pad and support. Was significantly cheaper while having more features too.

Hmm, not really looking for an Nintendo styled one, I prefer more Xbox styled.

Currently I am using a Gulikit ES Pro, I like that it has a good d-pad (though I am not a fan of it being circular) and it has hall effect triggers and TMR sticks. The fact that it also has wireless and motion sensing to work with a Switch is a bonus, but I mostly use it wired to play modern games on my PC and retro games on my MiSTer, which is why I wanted one with a good d-pad.

Haven't tried looking into the more expensive controllers yet since they are, well, expensive, and I would want to get three of them (one for my PC and two for my MiSTer for when I play with friends). I guess I could get two cheaper ones for my MiSTer and splurge on a single good one for my PC, but so far this Gulikit has been better than any other controller I have used, I used to use Xbox360 controllers.

Honestly, I don't care for wireless, all my 8BitDo controllers are wired only, if this controller came with a cheaper wired-only version I would prefer that. It's actually annoying having to turn it on/off even when wired.
>>
>>12808429
(Also forgot to mention, not a fan of where Start and Select are placed, I would prefer they be in the center, but I guess it's designed that way to mimic a Switch controller even though it's face buttons are labeled as an Xbox controller)

Did you already start Saga? If not you can just copy over your PD2 .sav file and rename it as your Saga save file. If you already started it you will likely have to use something like an online save converter to extract both saves and then write them to a single save file to use in Saga.

I guess you could also try mounting a memory card and using the BIOS to copy your PD2 save to it, then manually mount that same memory card when you load Saga and copy it back to internal memory.

TCT ones can, they audio is just slightly distorted and is in mono. (Both can be modded if you know what you're doing.)

they are flooded with fakes too. check it.

marketing, companies like analog specifically say its not emulation, it is better than software emulation though, especially because there is no overhead of an entire os and you can emulate the actual chips kinda physically with all their correct io etc

I think it's neat how Argonaut went from pototyping their SuperFX on FPGA hardware to itself being emulated on FPGA hardware.

What do you think is one of the main things FPGAs are used for? They were made so you could prototype a chip design before committing it so silicon.

i just started using the disc cores yesterday for ps1 its comfy. you should enable the auto detect thing it will auto launch correct core for a disc when inserted
>>
>>12812061
i probably won't use it much but it just dawned on me today i had a usb drive sitting in a drawer

where can i find this? may as well fuck with it while i have the drive hooked up
>>
>>12812084
idk i just used the companion tool they mention in the readme https://github.com/Anime0t4ku/Main_MiSTer_Physical_Disc

in the extras in the install center there is also something called misterdvd which lets you play dvd from disc all decoding is done via an fpga core instead of arm

I've been messing with the Jaguar core for the past few hours and it works great, but the one thing that really chaps my ass is how it doesn't allow me to map a button combination (like L+A for example) to one of the numpad buttons on a Jaguar pad. Is there some sort of workaround or is this just a stupid design oversight or technical deficiency I'll just have to live with?

>Famiclones

While I have a few for curiosity sake I don't play on them. My NES machine these days is a FC Lava or a mister

I know I'm responding to a days old post but most of the recent 8bitdo controllers have 4-5 ms of lag. I looked up the one I use and thats how much it has.

Since so many people were shitting on the 8bitdo D pad I went out and got the Elves 2, which a lot of people say is good. I fucking HATE the dpad on the Elves 2. I know it looks like a Saturn style d pad but it doesn't feel like a dpad at all. Feels like a short analog stick with a dpad topper.

I'm sticking with my (almost) perfect dpad on my Pro 3. The only other D Pad I like is the Mode Retro N64 Pro Controller (once you get the updated dpad). That feels great. Ran through Mario 1 a few nights ago with it.

I really hope Mod Retro makes a dual shock shaped controller with all the repairability and build quality as the M64 controller they make.
