So let me review this game as I experienced it as a child playing it when it did come out.Lets ignore the ultra fagots who go>AWCHULLY it is bad because I can not 2xTripple jump to get the unreachable star because the camera control's in my speed runThis is a game made for children and I played it as a child. The game was so bad that I did feel cheated I did feel jealous of my friend who did have a SNES with real Mario games on it not fucken mario 64!For context I did play the NES mario before in another friends house (bootleg hardware they got from these bazaars) I also played some SNES mario at another friends home. And then I really wanted to get a N64. WOW what disappointment it was! At the same time I got a game boy before the N64. I also got Mario Land 1 and 2 and played them to death to this day they are my fav games in the mario series. And then there was Mario 64. WOW what trash game. First you are thrown into a world map and find out that there is only 1 door you can open. So you start the map and.... basically get fucked . I walk around and there is no explanation to what to do next I fuck around in the game it is OK I guess and then I do not know what to do to finish the level it is OK I guess. It turns out the big guy on the mountain is the boss so I go fight him. Here is the first thing I try and it is to throw him off the mountain. I mean it makes logical sense that should damaged him hard. However he comes back up and babels something. I try this like 5 times. And we get bad design, peak bad design instead of rewarding logical thinking or alternative or sensible options the game forces you into defeating him in the one way it dames to be the correct one and the correct way is the most ass backwards bullshit you can imagine. So I defeated him and move on.1/3
>>12801436Now it is important to note I am ESL and my parents got me the game in a language that I almost can not speak, so no I am not fucken reading a wall of text for that. I suspect other kids also did not read the bullshit wall of text because games have a hard time even today making adults read text in games. So the next world is wamps castle or whatever(I made up my own names for the enemies BTW I called them the flat ones) to the games defense this one is far more logical then the previous bomb boss. Before this the flat guys did slam and have a plaster on their back(showing a crack) and the only way to damage them is to stomp on them. The same is true for the boss. A far better level should have been made the 1 level. So I finish this and.... yea here the bullshit starts. Now the first map has a race to complete. and map 2 has to go to the top and we are fucked. Now the game turns into idiotic frustration. You need to collect the stars however you basically run from painting to painting to get all the stars it is tedious since often you have no idea what to do to get one. There is the obvious>Collect 8 red coins however that is a boring scavenger hunt and frustrating if you have no radar like in modern games and trying to find the last coin.Lets contrast this to Mario Land 2. You get a open map and can do any of the levels in any order you like. Progression is simple. You either move right or up to the end or defeat the boss.Loved the game. Real mario game VS what feels like a fake Mario game made by some bootleg company2/3
>>12801438And after you go to the 3 segment or whatever the game becomes a pain. You get trash like wet dry world and other maps who look like some trash that should have gotten thrown out and you need to dick around in them to find the retarded stars and you need like 120 or whatever so you constantly are thinking if you need to go back to other shit levels to get stars and how to finish this garbage. This is where I did give up. What is there? Throwing Bowser into bombs for the 3 time?In contrast I did take a long time to finish Mario Land 2 (the mechanic if you hit zero lives you lose all the gate coins) is pure brilliance! And the castle was the most difficult part. I was actually excited to see what is at the end of it.>Herp derp the manual says1) I did not really read it2) Even if it says Wario or whatever he can still start a battle by throwing a crazy boss at you or get into a mech suit like in Mario Land 1! i also loved the shop idea and the power ups in that game. In contrast Mario 64 has shit. I see only 1 box for the wing cap and it is ghostly and the game wants me to unlock it or some shit.Truly the game is trash it really feels like some repetitive shit some bootleg company made. >NO it is great it is MARIO IN 33333DDDDD!!!!!!>IN 33333DDDDD!I seriously was disappointed and not impressed I wanted a real 2D game not this cut down tech demo. >No you are wrong!>If youThis is a statement only made by Mario 64 fagots who play this game to death and memorized the location of all stars.Guess what a child did not do while starting this game blind for the first time? What irritates me is the level of obsession and dick sucking Mario 64 gets while it is so painfully a retarded tech demo that gets worse and worse as you play. All I wanted is a real game and real Mario game. Why was it not 2D? The N64 era did feel like I was born to late and every retarded dev was chasing 3D games. No real 2D games.SP: Mario Kart 64 was fun
>>12801439Not retro, but you'd get a lot of enjoyment from the 3D Land/World games since they go back to Mario's 2D roots and are more linear.
Mario 64 is actually good because you haul ass and beat ass with a flurry fury of punches and kicks. Die goomba POW oh you want some too koopa? BAM come get me chuckya fucking cunt BACKFLIP GRAPPLE THROW KABOOOOOOMMMMMM! you wouldn't get it OP because your powerup pussy using ranged attacks
>>12801447Mario's most OP part of his moveset is the ability to crouch and do a sliding attack. It's gotten me out of many tough scrapes with Goombas. The Bullies can fuck off, though. Always hated those fuckers.
>>12801447there's supposed to be an "ass" in between "pussy" and "using" but nevertheless OP is a mega faggot and he should kill himself NOW preferably with an explosive so no one has to suffer with his putrid organs being donated to them
>>12801439Console gaming in the 90s was trash. Handheld pc and arcade hard carried the 90s. Thank god we had gb and ds to keep devs from going full retard with gfx whoring
>>12801447>>12801452You have to be 18 to post here.
>>12801456Handheld... PC, in the 90s? That didn't see mainstream adoption until the Deck, which is WAY beyond the scope of retro. I guess laptops existed back then? But their screens were literally Gameboy tier.
>>12801456>>12801460
>>12801439It is curious that Nintendo thought the 3D games were a total replacement for 2D Mario. Regardless of which style you prefer, they're not even close to similar games (not until 3D Land/World, at least).
>>12801436is this our daily goat/good game is ACTUALLY le bad. here are 100 reasons why:I am getting sick and tired of this kind of engagement baiting.
>>12801514Sunshine was more worth getting angry about. At least SM64 doesn't require you to collect ALL the stars, just a certain amount to unlock doors.
>>12801514As long as you engage with it the threads will continue
>>128015133d land and world are trash too. Nsmb was the successor to 2d
>>12801513Mario 64 is ultra trash however, you are stuck in a world with no real guide to progressing. (this could be fixed with a radar)The idea to collect stars ends up with you being confused and fucking yourself over because you need these 100 stars to fight the boss however you now need to run back to previous rooms to try a mission you can complete>Wait where can I collect 8 red coins to get a star? And other bullshit, because some of the stars are basically random unlocks after you swim into 8 rings of air underwater or some shit. Sounds fun to collect frustrating when you need these stars to progress and only have shit maps like dry wet world to play. >>12801514>game is ACTUALLY le bad. Explain how the fuck it is good>IT WAS REVOLUTIONARY FOR THE GENREDo not give a shit some game needed to be the first. I was still disappointed as a child.>Actually if youThat is the perspective of a adult fagot who completed this game over 300 times and memorized all the stars and how to get them.>If you think thenSorry this is a game for children and I was a child and I was disappointed.>is ACTUALLY le bad. I was a child and I did feel this way back in the day. Not sure how you can argue with this. Did you even grow up with this game? Or are you a zoomer indoctrinated by the Mario 64 community?
>>12801635Not him, but I was a child when SM64 came out, and I loved it. Granted, I did have the NP guide, so I'm sure there were plenty of things that might have frustrated me had I not had a guide. The only complaint I really have about it now is that perhaps they should have had Star groups or something, where collecting certain Stars doesn't automatically boot you back to Peach's Castle. I know some of them require getting kicked out of the level due to level differences between Stars, but there's no reason for the game to prevent you from collecting the Chain Chomp Star and the King Bob-omb Star in the same run.
>>12801653>Stars, but there's no reason for the game to prevent you from collecting the Chain Chomp Star and the King Bob-omb Star in the same run.Not a problem for me.>The only complaint I really have about it now is that perhaps they should have had Star groups or somethingYea I interpreted this totally differently when I did first read it.I was thinking they should have made it that there are like Yellow and Red and Blue stars. So to open the Level 1 boss room you need 10 yellow stars. To open the Level 2 boss room you need 10 Red stars and to open the L3 you need 10 blue stars. So you do not run like a insane maniac all over the castle looking for another star only to remember that level was shit. However the game still is a total mess of no real vision.Contrasting this game to Mario Land 2 is absolutely unbelievable. Mario land 2 levels are so easy to understand and complete. VS dicking around in a map to hope to find or guess where the next star is. Then you have the power ups in Land 2! Like LOL! Collecting the coins makes sense and you can play around with the power ups. In Land 2 there is a debate if to use the fire flower or the bunny carrot thing. Mario 64 has basically no ? boxes and the one non activated wing cap is an insult in the first map. That shit was not impressive to a child when it was released no idea why anyone think this is a good game. It only made me feel despair at the industry(YES EVEN AS A CHILD) who instead of making good 2D mario games like on the NES and SNES and game boy are making total 3D meme trash for the 3D meme. >Not him, but I was a child when SM64 came out, and I loved it. Did you complete it? What did you like about it? I simply played it a little and then did go to playing Mario Kart 64 a far better game in every way. >I did have the NP guide,NP? What was so great about it? Did they tell you how to get every star? I never did have Nintendo Power.
>>12801635>you are stuck in a world with no real guide to progressing. (this could be fixed with a radar)fuck you. the title of the stars are supposed to be the hint. its not the game's fault you couldnt read it.
>>12801456>>12801460>Handheld... PC, in the 90s? That didn't see mainstream adoption until the Deck, which is WAYNot him however I did think he did mean>Handheld. [END OF LINE]>pc. [END OF LINE]>arcade. [END OF LINE]Only forgot to place the , in there. And I think he did mean the game boy and the PC like DOOM on the PC.
Mario never got the 3d gameplay figured out until Odyssey
>>12801683>. its not the game's fault you couldn't read it.YES IT IS if English is not my first language.>dude read the mini text1) How many people did skip this because this is some mini text bullshit? Even EFL? How many children?2) They did say it the best in DOOM 2 where there is no plot and you can skip it all, I also remember others remembering how they skipped all dialogue or lore bullshit in early games as kids back in the day.3)Reading in games was not a thing, I remember playing NES games and you did not need to read, you memorized what some of the names did mean in NES mario and that was it.>Start Game>ResetETC.Basically we did read it kind of like this>Ey-Ey-Ronhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dd7FixvoKBw
>>12801436The only issue it's the camera, Nintendo went through all the trouble to make moving in a 3D environment fluid but forgot to tell the camera to do the same
>>12801635>this could be fixed with a radarIf you really think that radar is needed in a game as simple as Mario 64, you should just take yourself out of the gene pool and do society a favor. Hopefully you don't reproduce.
>it's another "I got filtered by a game made for children and I'm salty about it" threadit happens to the best of us, OP. Just jack off, go to sleep, and come back tomorrow with a different perspective.
>>12801731>"I got filtered by a game made for childrenLOL more like I was a child and did not like this game. All you bitching can not change that and I today can finish the game with an adult mind no problem.Funny how you fucks ignore that I managed to complete 2 Bowser battles before giving up on collecting more stars in progresivlley shit levels. >>12801726>If you really think that radarThe game is unfixable. Did anyone enjoy the maps on floor 3? The dry wet world and the other ones who look like someone smashed random shit together.
>>12801738>Did anyone enjoy the maps on floor 3They're intentionally more complex than earlier floors and is intended to challenge your platforming skills. Its called difficulty progression and is a core concept of game design.
>>12801738If your complaint is that 100%ing the game without a guide is tedious that's fine, but completion autists need to be put to death.
>>12801723Just so we're clear, you believe that it's the game's fault that you don't speak the language that a game that you bought was in.
>>12801723Yeah, this game requires reading and understanding english for sure. My nigger friend that could barely read and had like only 30 stars even though he owned the game for a year. When he lent it to me, I beat it and collected 120 stars in less than a week. I really loved the game, but sorta agree that the 2d games are better games, but no mention of donkey kong 1996 the best 2d mario, still makes you a pleb.
>>12801778I meant 1994
>>12801740These maps look like random crap smashed together!>>12801741>but completion autists need to be put to death.I was a child looking for more stars to fight bowser!
>>12801746Games where not like this before.>that you bought was in.Dude all the NES cartridges we got where all in English and we barley did speak English.
>>12801806>These maps look like random crap smashed together! You keep using Wet Dry World as an example, but that's the only level I can think of on the third floor that is uniquely abstract in that way. What other levels on the third floor are like that?
diarrhea in my mouth
>>12801815>What other levels on the third floor are like that?Others mentioned them beforeThat mini gigantic world(forget the name)The mushroom map with the monkey(forget the name)https://youtu.be/fYQkN7BDIzY?t=490The game really feels like they did run out of good ideas the longer you go.
>>12801829>That mini gigantic world>The mushroom map with the monkeyTall tall mountain was not abstract at all (monkey map), you were ascending a mountain. Tiny-huge island was also a themed pair and not abstract. It really sounds like you're just bad at platforming when it gets challenging.
>>12801814So are you going to answer the question
>>12801835Watch the video the map looks like it was thrown together, there is no real composition even to the previous levels like bomb map.It clearly looks like they where running out of creativity or something. >Tall tall mountainFeels empty and the mushroom a little out of place. Hard to describe, not so polished like the previous maps. Wet dry world is the worst there however.>Tall tall mountain was not abstract at all (monkey map),Thanks I did not memorize the map names and probably never will.
>>12801839>So are you going to answer the questionI already did.
>>12801829>>12801835>>12801894I think I got the perfect analogy. You know the doom WAD "the thing you cannot defeat" ? And the further you go the more distorted the maps become? Thy start normal and then get more an more distorted until only nonsesne is left? This is how the maps in Mario 64 feel. They start normal and then get more and more distorted like this is some idea of an island floating in water and the big/small gimmick however here the geometry looks like it was corrupted and here it looks like you smashed [polygons together and called is something! I like them however I see that something is going very wrong here. Like the devs did not sleep for 5 days and are rushing to complete the map. Wet Dry world was what broke me and the literally what crap CGI render of its painting. The quality was decreasing I was getting more and more shit maps and trying to farm the 100 stars was a pain now and I did not feel to do that to only throw bowser for the 3 time.Did literally no one have the same reaction as a kid? I remember people talking>Oh ye wet dry world sucked assAnd showed the gameplay and I was like>YES! I remember that! I did feel the same way! I did give up on this shit game then!
>>12801897You didn't. Apparently you still can't read English.
>>12801923Answer me this question first:>WOW are you seriously blaming the game that your parents got you as a present?!>For the fact that you need to have registered your DNA profile with the government to play it?>Are you seriously blaming it for this?Or how about>WOW I can not believe you are blaming the game for the fact that all the dialogue and written text in it is Esperanto (no other language options only Esperanto). Why did you a child not learn Esperanto already?! Are you seriously blaming the game for this?
>>12801938>Still can't answer the question.
>>12801938If you can't read English, you aren't the target audience for an English language video game. I play Japanese language video games despite not being able to read Japanese. I don't whine on the internet that the game is bad because I cannot read the text. I accept it as a consequence of playing a game that wasn't made for me.
>>12801945You failed to respond to mine. You hopelessly lost this debate.
>>12801950>>12801945
>>12801949Still evading the question!>If you can't read English, you aren't the target audience for an English language video gameOK zoomer! This was not the case for >DOOM 1 and 2>Duke 3DAll you needed to memorize where what words start the game etc. >>If you can't read English, you aren't the target audience for an English language video gameNot a problem for contra or NES Mario or SNES mario or game boy Mario(Mario Land 1 and 2)>you aren't the target audience My parents did buy me this game, jesus fuck do 30 year old zoomer only experience this game after watching some mario 64 streamer and then getting it as 30 year old or some shit?
>>12801436>>12801438>>12801439I wanted a n64 for shadows of the empire. I eventually got a used copy of mario64 from blockbusterBut it was disappointing until I played the DS remake
>>12801436Nobody cares, ESL.
>>12801715Okay, that makes more sense. Also about the anon's point about gfx whoring on portables, some devs were doing exactly that on GBA. While Nintendo themselves liked to position it as a beefier SNES, it was MUCH more powerful than it let on.
I'm replaying for the first time since it came out in 96. Going for all 120 stars which I never did before. I'm having a blast and once you just start trusting the auto cam the camera is fine most of the time. The only time so far that the camera was shitty was in Lethal Lava Land, in the pyramid climbing up the one pole to the little platform that had the spinning fire trap. The camera was just not showing me what I needed. As far as platforming and secret hunting it's been a blast.
I managed to almost get 120 stars in this game when I was kid that barely knew English, you might genuinely be retarded, anon, the "I'm ESL" excuse doesn't cut it.
>>12801436If you're really going to do a post in three parts with reddit spacing you should make sure to at least, you know, write concisely instead of a long immature rant.TL;DR btw.
Nigga I ain't reading all that
As far as janky 3D tech demo Mario games go, I thought Sunshine was more fun
>>12801960You're being completely ridiculous. When I was a kid, my Dad bought a copy of Gyromite out of some used bin and gave it to me as a gift. This is the game that came packaged with R.O.B. and required one to play, and I didn't have a R.O.B., so I couldn't play it.Do you see me going online and complaining that Gyromite is a terrible game because my Dad made an uninformed purchasing decision? No, because that would be ridiculous and make me look and sound like a complete idiot. What I did was I explained the situation to my dad, telling him that I still appreciated the thought behind the game but that it didn't work, and he started asking me what games I wanted instead of buying them at random. The next three games I got from him were Zelda 1, Metroid, and Punch-Out.Frankly, I have a lot more grounds to complain about Gyromite that you have to complain about Mario 64, because even if you were to skip every star that involves reading, Mario 64 is still a quite enjoyable game.
>>12806561Yep chatGPT wrote this.>Do you see me going online and complainingWhen was that chatGPT? the 80s???? I remember as a kid running around these paintings and trying to farm enough stars to progress to the next level. And all I got where terrible levels or no idea where to find a good star. This is what I remember and I did give up.
The issue with Mario 64 is that it's basically empty, there's nothing going on really. You have vast, vast empty spaces with fences here and there, some hills, a bit of water maybe here and there. Platforming levels with just... black space as the background. It was clear that they were straining the hardware and couldn't put much into the game at once. But it also gives you a vast feeling of emptiness. The way you're corralled into these empty areas is insulting too.The control is fairly nice and fluid, I will admit. That's the best part of the game, maybe the only GOOD part. The plot as usual is fluffy meaningless Nintendo nonsense. The enemies are boring. You get those coins same as always.
OP is a faggot but the one thing that really sucks about Mario 64 is the graphics. Look at this shit >>12801738 there is simply NO art direction. They just took stock photos, reduced the resolution and slapped them in the game as is, with no cohesive art style or direction, it looks completely random. And no it has nothing to do with "early 3D" or the limits of the N64, most other games from the era and platform have actual art direction.
>>12801738>I today can finish the game with an adult mindThis is actually not something you can reasonably claim. You have never possessed an adult mind, so you can't have any evidence of what you would be capable of doing with one.

It's just a really boring game imho
>>12801436I'm not a Nintendo fanboy but this really was a great game at the time. I personally consider the N64 to be kind of a shit console but this,Blast Corps and Conkers Bad Fur Day were pretty good games. I didn't care for Ocarina of Time and will actively diss that game but Mario 64 was actually good
>>12807125Dude it was a tech demo that they had been working on before the hardware was even finalized, then they finally decided on Ultra 64, and the Nintendo devs (and a select tiny handful of studios) got their dev kits and furiously tried to complete a game before the Halloween deadline so the GM could go out to the cart making facility. As is usual for the first crop of new games for any hardware, computer or console, it was just a way to make some cash off the backs of the efforts of the devs learning their way around the system. So it's hollow and empty and the art kinda sucks and it's boring and has levels with no backgrounds at all, the one thing the product manager did correctly was insist that controlling Mario be fun and smooth and that the game should be discoverable, there never was a real open world Mario. Given the hardware constraints, the fact that early developer tools would be both lightly buggy and unopitimized, and beta qualty at best, they did an OK job.Nintendo only made a tiny handful of games, most proof of concepts released when the console was brand new so it'd have launch titles. Remakes / enhanced versions of older games, etc. Aside from having some launch titles, they had to do this to attract developers, who themselves would need proof that this machine was good and invest the money in the dev kits, and more importantly their employees, so Nintendo could have some games on its system.Nintendo's N64 games are basic in terms of gameplay AND technical feats and other developers ended up doing more with the hardware.
