How do I break the stranglehold nostalgia has on the games I remember fondly and really separate the wheat from the chaff?

By playing completely random stuff for longer than 2 minutes. You'll build a frame of reference. All that really matters is that you enjoy yourself though, so it doesn't matter unless you want to act the pseud.

who cares? If you want to have fun just play whats fun. If you want to be taken seriously as a well read journalist then if you are asking this question then noone is going to take you seriously anyway.

If you have some free time, the best way to do this would be trying to make a game yourself.
Nothing gives you more perspective on why games are made a certain way than actually developing one and realizing and dealing with all the issues that every other game creator has struggled with over the years.

It doesn't have to necessarily be a big game; even a short little project in Twine or Renpy or RPG Maker will teach you a whole lot. You'll start to appreciate all kinds of things you never noticed before, and gain a firmer foundation to be critical of games when they're flawed.

Kind of like how studying a foreign language can open your eyes about your own language's nuances and quirks in the process.
