Were there really dinner parties and singing in the streets on release like I hear oldheads say?
>>12802184Doom was so huge its name became a regular word in the English language. If something bad happened to you, you would say something like "I'm DOOMed!", referencing the marine's death at the end of the first episode
No there were not.
>>12802184Nobody says that faggot. If someone told you something like that they were mocking you and you were too stupid to realize it.
>>12802184No, but, it was more widely installed than windows, and at least one university mainframe crashed because too many students were playing doom together.Windows 95 almost did have dancing in the streets, so it's almost weird doom didn't. I guess that's the difference a corporate marketing campaign makes.
Yes and everyone fucked your mom while uour dad and brother cried in the corner
>>12802184Never heard of that, I was there
>>12802184At the time, Id Software switched from Apogee being their publisher to self-publishing. I even pre-ordered it even before the game came out, and I still ended out getting version 1.1 instead of 1.0. It was okay to me, as I had to run it on low detail about 2 steps down from max screen size on my 386DX-40, but it ran well on my cousin's Pentium on high detail (1-step down from max screen size as I prefer to have the UI elements). Dinner parties and street performers existed back then, but mostly unrelated to the game.
>>12802985Nice!
Nah. But I'd expect gay orgies to happen whenever a new Sonic is released.
i still remember the line at the post office was out in the street to mail order the full version
>>12803116Thanks. In searching around, it seems like v1.0 was shareware only, so the first registered versions are 1.1. That's pretty much my experience with the game, red cross medkits and the swastika room, as I never got v1.4 nor 1.666.>>12803237Korone is pretty popular there. Was amused with her playthrough of Doom64. It was Korone and Rushia dragging me into that rabbit hole.
>>12802184It was a sleeper hit. Then talk radio and TV talkshows blasted it into mainstream must have, by saying it "must be banned". After that every kid wanted it, shareware copies were treated like crack for 12 year olds. But what immortalized it was the wad hacking, Doom turned into Minecraft after that. So nerds could pretend to be bad boy hackers with marginal skill. Basically it was a constant evolution and rebirth of the same damn game over a 5 year period that made it a staple. It was hard to replicate that magic.
>>12802184My parents were in the Air Force and my dad was a pretty big nerd. I forget the details really, but he apparently got a few people together on a late night shift and networked Doom in the control room several times. He had set up all the networking infrastructure for the base when they first started doing that in the early 90's. I had a PC around the time, too, and I played it many times with my friends over a modem. We would plan sick days and skip school to play it all day, parents couldn't leave to come check if I was telling the truth, they were just too busy and the military wouldn't let you do that kind of shit anyway unless it was an emergency. So many good times. Played lots of other stuff too.
>>12802206In computer networking, port number 64 is reserved for Doom 64 due to the popularity of Doom 64 LAN parties.
>>12802184No, Mortal Monday, the day Mortal Kombat was simulatenously released for SNES/Genesis/Gameboy/Game Gear or Sonic 2sday, the worldwide release across all regions of Sonic 2 had bigger buzzes than the release day of Doom, though it would of course go on to be bigger than both those games.
>>12802184When my parents would have friends over and drink they would hover around PC and take turns playing it
>>12802184All I remember was being 11years old and at the mall when I entered a massive antechamber with Radio Shack in the distance blasting that D_RUNNIN, and I just had to approach. And when I entered the store everything was rearranged, pushed to the sides of the store to have Doom front and center on a podium on a raised table. It was... an infinite arcade machine, an outrageous thing had appeared before my eyes.
>>12802184Is it true they used ][ as the roman numerals?
>>12802297>Windows 95 almost did have dancing in the streets,How do you ALMOST have dancing in the streets?
>>12802985Wasn't 1.0 only shareware?
