Thoughts on the Atari 5200?
>>
Good shit if you can fix the controller. It also is backwards compatible with the 2600, but you need a weird adapter.

I don't think that is right. The 7800 is backwards compatible, while the 5200 is a weird beast of its own. Maybe now I will go look this up and find out I embarrassed myself, who knows.

Nah, there was an "adapter" (actually a VCS-in-a-cart using the 5200 just for I/O) but it only worked out of the box with the newer 5200 models, the older ones (with the 4 controller ports) could be modded to support it.

Atari actually included a flyer with it that told the buyer they could ship their adapter to them to be modified to work with the older systems.

Neat, I didn't know that. The mods I've seen are done on the 5200 itself.

I replied too quickly, it seems you had to bring the 5200 console for the Atari tech service to mod, not the adapter.

The floppy joystick was the standard for PC gaming of the time period, which was seemingly based off of RC plane and car remotes. It wasn't quite as silly of a design as it is often considered.
