How do you get into this series?
Metal Slug 1-5 is pretty straightforward, you can just use an arcade emulator such as FinalBurn Neo, but Metal Slug 6 and 7 has been a bit of a pain.
The original MS6 on Atomiswave can only be emulated by Flycast, but my results were terrible. Sprites get corrupted all the time and I'm not sure if it's possible to fix this by tinkering with the settings.
MS7 is native to the DS inb4 not retro with a following enchanted port to the PSP... and it has input delay, what the hell? Press a button way too fast and it might not even register.
And this apparently is a recurring problem with many ports, the Metal Slug Anthology seems like it would be a legal and ideal solution, but guess what? Input delay.

There's unironically no reason to play the series beyond X and 3 though. It just became Metal Slop after that.
