What kind of save policies do you assign yourselves, anons?I always play a map the first time saveless. If i die I'l usually atleast try to play past that point a few times before making a judgement call. I feel like the raw length of a map is more of a determining factor. I'm not particularly good at doom though, I think Scythe2 map27 is the level of difficulty where I'd question even being personally capable of single segment.

Reposting the post just once, sorry. Maybe someone who has knowledge on the subject will see this.>Can someone help me? >>12805012>Playing on UV gives you the full experience and that's what mattersDepends. Playing a map on other skill settings first could allow you to more appreciate the changes brought about in UV: In Doom 1, there’s some ‘lightpole’ props in dark areas that are absent on a higher difficulty.Encounters could also play differently, and maybe ammo drops are less frequent on lower settings because the author thought they weren’t needed.Playing a map on all settings feels like a more “full” experience.

>>12805805Hey, would it be possible to give the gib splatter effect its own pRNG table so that it could somehow be preserved and present for recording and playing back clvl21 demos?
>>12805734The engine is capable of reading udmf formatted map data like pic rel, that's pretty much it. You can rotate flats and tint sector light with colormaps, but that seems to be based on ID24, not udmf. I tried a few generic line actions (like "23 - Floor Raise by Value" or "243 - End Normal") in Woof and the engine just ignored them completely. You can't even make a functional map with this format yet, it's just laying the foundations. Udmf also doesn't necessarily include anything like ASC, Decorate or polyobjects it's just a way to sort vertex/linedef/sector data etc. so don't get your hopes up.
>>12805861Using textures and flats interchangeably, and aligning flats manually, are the two things I want out of UDMF.

It's not just a matter of RNG. In any case, I rarely record demos, so I'm not interested in going through the hassle of figuring it out.

They tend to blend into pixel noise further away pretty well, and especially in the dark.Doom 95 offered high resolutions, and this was where they first became more visible, creating this sort of bright, almost crystalic/liquid refraction. I believe also that some of the early console ports went Fuck It and never bothered trying to create any kind of effect for them at all, just omitting that, making them functionally identical to normal Pinkies.GzDoom/UzDoom has a couple of different options for how to render Spectres, so you can try different ones to see how they feel like. >>12805880I meant the flying spray of blood for gibbing. And fair enough, it'd probably be a bunch of trouble to work out. Once the Decorate support is fully in though, I guess I could just bake in gore effects like that in my own monsters. Of course, then it could unnecessarily stack with the existing blood spray effect, and it makes me wonder if, later in the future when this would finally be on the table, if maybe an additional actor flag should be added to signal to ports like Nugget to NOT use the blood spray effect? ZDoom ports would only need to ignore such a flag.
>>12806086Of course. I'm not sure exactly what you mean by configured, but I imagine it's something along the lines of needing to do extra work on your end to make it function. In theory: no, it's just a matter of making sure your friend has the same exact sourceport, map set and mods and then going through the motions of connecting to them. This is where I can't really help since I never really play multiplayer, but other anons might.Deimos -1 (and Phobos Delta-1 by extension) does have a bit more going on for co-op play since you can drop off medical supplies. In hindsight maybe I should have extended this functionality to the deployables but again, I don't play MP so it didn't cross my mind. You're better off using UZDoom though. PD-1 requires some Decorate functions Zandronum lacks.>>12806103Thanks for playing, and yes, I wanted something a bit less over the top than YZ. I like it when the guns hit hard but there's less ammo to work with, Struggle: Antaresian Legacy really opened my eyes to that sort of gameplay.>>12806123>the BFGOh yeah, it's more immediately powerful than YZ's sword. The tradeoff is it's just a super BFG of sorts, so you can't quite rely on it for those massive hordes of monsters you see in proper slaughter maps. Still, the blast radius on that thing is 512 and it one shots literally anything that isn't a boss AND spawns tracers on hit too.

Finally finished playing this. It's quite good overall. Trying to buy every weapon made me realize that it really doesn't have that many maps. It's kind of a shame that you can't replay character specified maps with other characters once you beat the episode. Now it's time to way for the final episode. Here's a proof of concept 3d geometry thing I made a while ago. Very impractical to construct and bad for performance but it makes for a convincing illusion of room over room. It's pretty much just a super dense lattice of intersecting midtextures, which is why my frames and drop sometimes and the visplanes randomly spike to several hundred. >>12808205>would've beenShubnigga we can't even tell what Quake FPS would've been, with how they barely managed to crunch it out.
>>12808240This is a hypothetical, it's assuming the game Romero pitched and teased got made as they imagined it.

>>12808220https://rome.ro/s/qtalk400.txtThis is Quaketalk 95 from October 20 1995 and has all the public quotes Romero had made on Quake up to that time. It was going to be an open/semi-open world RPG with third person combat and a day/night cycle with NPCs that went about the world on schedules doing their thing depending on the time. The character was going to be a super bad ass named Quake with a giant war hammer. Work had began on it (some of the enemies from the finished Quake were created for the RPG, like the knights etc) and it was the next month that they had their company meeting and decided to abandon the RPG and just make it a shooter. So this file from October contains everything he had publicly said about it before that decision was made.
>>12808190nice
>>12808263Yeah it set mine off last I looked at it, far as I can tell it's whatever the shit they did to some dll, it's probably a false positive but with how much of a liability GzDoom has been since 3.0, who the fuck knows.
>>12808268The way he described it, it sounds extremely cool but I do have some doubts they could've pulled all of this off at that time or at least within the timeframe it took Quake to be made. It may have taken a whole other year to make it than the Quake we got took.
>>12808023There's been loads of fun ones, some pretty small too, dude just committed himself to the content mil immense fuckery of covering little but the big name 32+ map ones so it's no fucking wonder he killed his own enthusiasm for shit.
>>12808326>within the timeframe it took Quake to be madeOnce again, Quake development was crunched to hell and back, people were dropping like flies. There's no other game that can be made in this timeframe, Quake is like the absolute maximum you can pull out in that time.On a side note, God bless them for focusing on making the basic FPS game but making it super crazy polished, instead of half-assing the basics or bloating extra features. I can barely imagine someone making such a decision in modern gamedev.
>>12808373They should've taken the extra time to make the RPG.

>Story was never taken that seriously>Protagonist was a blank slate>Gameplay comes first>Best modding of all timeI wonder if people take these to the extreme in a way that means "you're not supposed to think the premise of Doom is cool or has any appeal at all" and that's why we got some mods the way they are. They see Doom as a vehicle for their own characters and ideas, as if the premise of a buff dude chainsawing demons is not meant to be liked.Which is kinda ironic because at the same time, with some mods and Realm667 assets, you get the feeling of fans "expanding the Doom setting" in ways that never really happen in the official games besides maybe Legacy of Rust or something. But whenever you see a mod with a premise like "what if Ralsei is in the Backrooms", you have to wonder what they think of the actual premise of Doom and even its influences at the time like Alien or the kind of movies that id watched back then. And the follow up to this also being "caring about Doom's setting is when you give a shit about the nuDoom lore which has a whole different direction from the original games anyway".
>>12808419>>12808432Did he overpromised about Quake? Or Doom?

>>12808268talk about scope creep
>>12808205>I think we were robbedNah, most of these ideas were carried over into Daikatana (which also had RPG elements and NPC allies) and all of those ideas came from early quake, but everyone knows what happened to that... I think his ideas were way too ambitious with unrealistic expectations for something from 95 when 3D stuff was still in its early stages and much more difficult to work on, especially since they only had a year to get everything done. I’ve noticed that Romero really seems to prioritize quantity over quality. desu I’m kinda satisfied with what Q1 ended up becoming.

>>12808727Doing that twice for each wad, filming it all, writing his script, recording that, editing it all, all before moving onto the next one and then the next one, on top of having a job and a life outside of Doom crap.It would have been healthier and more sensible to do smaller wads, stuff like Hi Viz is only 7 maps but it's plenty to do a video on, of course the trouble is it's not gonna do the numbers like doing a Cacoward darling every week for an entire series but it's how you don't kill your enjoyment of it dead.
>>12808263I can't tell if I should be impressed or horrified by this. It's top-tier schizo. Even from the first-minute presentation I can tell it's going to be one of those "so esoteric and quirky lowercase 2deep4u" projects that only the author can ever relate to because they've pharmaceutically transcended humanity and no longer exist on the same plane as the rest of us.Anyway, to get this shit to run with GZDoom 4.14.3 without running the exe you need to do the following:>get the two Data.eos files from the Data folder. Data1 is gzdoom.pk3, Data2 is the TC itself.>move the Maps folder from data1 to data2.>in ZScript/player/ELPH.zsc, comment out TestActivateLine and line one below. This is the only thing that requires the custom exe as the method is some native thing specific to that version. From what I see it only displays a "use" prompt on the HUD. Inconsequential. This got MAP01 to run fine. But I don't give a fifth of a fuck about vanilla in any capacity so we're going modded. Here's what to do:>in mapinfo/GAMEINFO.zmap, remove pc_EventHandler unless you want the custom crosshair>Null check any places you see "doomelph(", which is mostly in POWERUP.zsc, RESOLVE.zsc, and ZSCRIPT.zsc>in the case of saveChecker (ZSCRIPT.zsc), remove that typecast entirely. It's unnecessary>in ZSCRIPT.zsc, ABSOLUTELY comment out "CVar.SaveConfig()" or your mod bindings will get nuked every time. Likely an engine bug.>to access the options menu, use "openmenu OptionsList" in the menu. No idea how relevant half of these are for modded stuff>remove SBARINFO>load your mod AFTER this oneYMMV depending on the mod. No guarantees everything will run smoothly either. The map script source is deleted so the whole thing is a complete black box. The ACS source on the site doesn't help at all.

>>12808921Teacup's maps are arguably the best in the set, very worth playing.>>12808947I posted about it before, it's some weird thing software rendering can do with some long orthogonal linedefs in certain cases (I first noticed it in a map of my own, seems to happen in some tall ceilings).Anyway, literally just splitting up the linedef into multiple shorter ones should fix it. I hope you'll still take my almost finished map BTW.
>>12808881Congrats on the release. It's always good to see the general make stuff.
>>12808863I may be fat, but I'm not drunk, thank you very much.
>>12808935I still hate The Factory the most.
>>12808881I'll be playing these and sharing my thoughts.Map 1 looks surprisingly good. It often reminds me of Bauhaus.wad and that's good, it's one of my favorites. It seems to take after some older WADs that aren't afraid of letting you fucking yourself over if you don't look for secrets and don't play the whole map. I ran out of ammo something like three times and beat a couple pinkies to death before getting the chainsaw. The red key fight was infight central for me, I think I spent something like 2 minutes waiting for the barons and mancs to kill each other as well as the few other monsters and managed to leave without much trouble at all. It's good/10.
>>12809089>I ran out of ammo something like three timesyeah that's the problem of both guy's mapsi played them >3 times each and it happened every time
>>12809089>I ran out of ammo something like three times and beat a couple pinkies to death before getting the chainsaw.I really liked this, you get starved some on ammo, but you get a saw and good opportunities to make great use of it in the art gallery.I love maps that make the saw fun.
>>12809089Onto map 2 now. It's still pretty and makes more use of the BTSX textures, but this time you can really feel you're fucking up if you don't track other weapons and secrets. I pulled through with a couple deaths but I braced for the eventual bottleneck and relied more on infighting again. This one could have use some more ammo in plain sight, I'm afraid. Unlike map 1, you're gonna be seeing a lot more mid tier monsters. The ending was cool though. Punched out the two viles after dumping my bullets into them.>>12809106My only gripe is two maps with this exact kind of gameplay might be a little much.>>12809109Yeah, it's not like ammo starvation isn't a huge issue since you do get berserk and chainsaw. It's an incovenience if you blow all your ammo away before leaving though.
>>12809198Map 3 is pretty cool and if there wasn't a bit of a concern to set something up map 2's exit, I would have said it would have made an excellent map 2. It's short, simple and actually can kill you really quickly if you just go along with it.These two fuckers almost managed to pin between some crates and I'm not sure how I slipped past them. Anyway, got the secret exit. Curious to see what that will look like.
>>12809198>>12809217do you think 2 and 3 should be swapped?the continuous players will come loaded with ammo from secret levels so 'scraping the bottom' will be easier for themlore-wise it also may work, at the end of deadlift you board the ship so it takes you to a techbase (as a stowaway?) and at the end of scraping you go out to a surface with palms so also a good transition to a desert 'episode'
>>12809227It might be a good idea, Deadlift lets the player cut loose but still demands enough care to be beaten and the reward is the ammo you'll bring into Scraping the Bottom (or Brevity is the Soul of Shit).
>>12809227another idea:tertiary -> deadlift -> (secret)caverns -> scraping -> tethys -> oasis -> brevity
nnghhHHHH!STAIRSSTAIRS DOWNjust writing note for a level, going back to sleep now
>>12809272I too had idea for stairs-themed wad not so long agoAll 32 maps of stairs. Not always directly down but in general each map nudges you in downwards direction. High verticality, stair fights.First level you descend the stairs of your home, then a city (remember altruze.wad?), then some mountain, aztec temples, swampy bogbottom, cave, hell, and eventually you arrive to the center of the earth.
>>12809272>STAIRS DOWNThe Going Down sequel where you instead descend down a very long staircase.
>>12809279Didn't the secret map kind of do that?
>>12809278>>1280927910000 steps of /vr/
>>12809217Map 31 is probably name ironically, but it was gimmicky and pretty cheeky - so you know, the sort of thing you give secret status to. I did run out of ammo before the finale (which seems to be a strange reocurrence in this WAD), but then again I'm not playing seriously. I'm just bumbling through these levels and seeing where they lead me. This one took me something like 15 minutes to get through. The final exit denial is great, actually. The gawky gargoyle pillars are adorable.
>>12808539That's how people catalogued gaming news at the time, zoomie.
>>12809089>I ran out of ammo something like three times and beat a couple pinkies to death before getting the chainsaw.Same, but I'm playing on a trackpoint and I feel like I could've done a lot better otherwise. It does feel like an older style pwad though, just a fair bit prettier. I still thought it lacked some interest in some areas, but - speedmap. I think biting off a bit more than was chewable was a theme for this set.

>>12809546I don't mind mtpain/dean of doom, but any wad that essentially forces you to know what's coming up beforehand is irritating to me. Even if, after you know what is going to happen, the fights are fun, the fact that you have to know in the first place is wrong.A map that has to proceed with caution the first time through and still able to make it on a first playthrough is better than any carefully scripted clairvoyancy-traps of similar quality.Traps: fine.Traps that require precognition to escape: bullshit.

>>12809558At some point though you run into a limit of how hard you can make a fight while keeping it fair for blind players. I like my fights dick crushingly hard, I don't mind needing to spend over an hour on a long ass fight with multiple waves. The blind experience usually means nothing to me as I prefer the experience of practicing the fight to perfection to be fun instead. But I demo slaughtermaps so ymmv.

>>12809558>>12809650Multiple difficulty balancing seems the solution for this issue: Harder settings are less friendly for 'blind players', easier skill settings are more approachable and less rude with their traps and encounters. >>12809671Saving isn't cheating, but a map that requires it on a first playthrough is poor design imo. >>12809670I can understand that perspective, but even then uv should be balanced toward top tier players on a blind run rather than save scummers. No offense.
>>12809729>didn'tDon't. Obv
>>12809731>uv should be balanced toward top tier players who determines who is "top tier"? what the fuck is "top tier" in doom, anyway? is it speedrunners? people like decino who play slaughterslop on stream? this isnt some mega-competitive game like counter strike or overwatch with thousands of metrics per map, per character, etc, etc. the idea of designing something for a specific player when theres no metric to judge who would fit that criteria is...nonsensical. absurd.
>>12809529Is Sunlust really an "A+"? I thought it was just supposed be a memewad
>>12809795Yeah, it's pretty great, but you may need to drop your difficulty to HMP or even HNTR. It's a pretty hard mapset. UV is for those who want to become doom gods.
The Forgotton Shrine was my favorite too but only because Secrets of Evermore is a favorite game of mine. Same with Go Fuck Yourself and Streets of Rage.
>>12809731I think that UV should be balanced to what the mapper himself considers hard, but still beatable.
>>12809670>Multiple difficulty balancing seems the solution for this issueProblem is it's a solution that requires re-educating the dingbats who think they have to blind, single-segment UVmax everything or else they'll never see their pet gerbil again, that they can go down the skills and it's fine.>>12809738Neither really, I don't balance for speedrunners since they do their own thing and you'll only make it miserable for everybody else while trying to stop them breaking shit, and I sure as fuck don't balance for streamers who get incredibly bitchy if they can't find every secret on their first (and probably only) blind run of a map because you're just trying to feed a content mill.>>12809938Pretty much this, HNTR is my beatable without too much effort, HMP is challenging for the average player, UV is my difficult but not I Wanna Be The Guy bullshit.
>>12809795It's fucking good. As said though, it has difficulty levels for a reason, it goes balls to the walls on UV, but is considerably more restrained on HMP and HNTR, so while it has its very earned reputation for challenge, it's actuallu also accommodating at the same time. It's worth noting IMO, because many .wads don't bother implementing difficulty levels at all, and also because a lot of people ignore implemented difficulty levels but then complain about .wads being too hard.
>>12809795>Sunlust>memewadwdym?
Finished Stagnant Weather and decided to switch back to Combined_Arms to play something with Tech Monk and chose Slime On Earth. This fits nicely.
>>12809945so then who would you consider "top tier"? or are you just saying youre gonna make it balls difficult and if they can be beat it, they can beat it, which makes them "top tier"?
>>12810028Rats, they're top fucking percentage.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgaPmUjYbTc
>>12810039you know whati agree. i love rats, and they deserve to be the top tier of doom players
>>12809278That's way better and more ambitious than the notion that struck me in my sleep, I just realized I should turn a few parts of my map into stairways to make it less flat feeling.Legit, your idea has some legs, at least for an episode or so, and you should do it.The vision I get in my own head of this now, is just plain going into the basement of a normal building (perhaps you're playing as Maintenance Guy or Plumber Guy), and it's a normal basement, except there's stairs down into a sub-basement, and then that sub-basement has stairs going down into another basement floor, and it's just this increasing depth down into the earth, of these different sketchy basements, and which get more absurd and outlandish. Some are claustrophobic, some are weirdly roomy, some are dry, some are moist, some are cool, some are warm.I want lots of shadow and contrast, with stark and gaudy color highlights, like a Sunsoft game.
>>12809731>a map that requires it on a first playthrough is poor designBy this metric, every single map is poorly-designed at least once since every map can kill you if you don't know what's coming next even if it's specifically made to avoid cheap deaths. Just because (you) are a skilled player it doesn't mean the next person to check the map out is, and this holds especially true for nasty traps that can be seen as early as E1M6's red key room.(you) are probably the kind of person who expects to boot up Gradius or R-Type and beat it first try, no hits, without any further attempts to toy with the mechanics it offers or be cool with dying, learning and applying what you learned to finish the level without dying. The death of curiosity and patience is very, very real.>>12809729A /vr/illage sounds like a cool place to visit, actually.
>>12809731>but a map that requires it on a first playthrough is poor designI don't think that's a realistic or fair assessment. What if there's a trap or ambush? Maybe it's a deadly one and you didn't survive, or maybe you're either perceptive enough to suss it out, or just gud enough to make it.
I couldn't get captcha yesterday and post, whats up with that?
>>12810115I guess all the encounters have to be predictable as fuck to cater to those needing to single segment everything on the first try.
>>12810102>By this metric, every single map is poorly-designed at least once since every map can kill youThat's not the same thing. Just because any map CAN kill you doesn't mean that careful conscious playing can't save you. Obviously these are >opinions, and there are loads of maps out there that seemingly require precognition that people like. I don't just don't care them in that regard though. They're like iwannabetheguy.wadartificialdifficulty.wadThese obviously aren't real, but I kinda want to make them now.But an example would be a map where you have two paths, one locks you into a fight and the other path you didn't take has all the ammo you need for the fight. There are other maps where a trap pretty much requires you just getting lucky in your response to avoid instant Cyberdemon death, or remembering the one tiny pillar to avoid the arch vile while mancubi fire at you from all sides. Technically you can do these first go, but traps lose meaning imo when they're stacked so far against you like this because you're not scraping by at 50% health living by your wits, you're just trying again. There's a balance is all and I think a lot of maps miss it.>(you) are probably the kind of personStopped reading here.
>>12810160The kind of people who actually really like single segmenting don't tend to want levels to go easy on them.
>>12810184>Obviously these are >opinions, and there are loads of maps out there that seemingly require precognition that people like. That's like, what, Hell Revealed 1 & 2?People don't tend to make maps like that anymore, and thank fuck for that.

>>12809670>People who go through at an easier setting also have the harder difficulties to look forward to on a replayIf I lived eternally, I'd replay stuff. One reason (of many) I like>slaughtermapsis there are no secrets mostly or they're very obvious. Also constant action and not running around empty levels hugging walls. Yes the gameplay is kinda cheap, and those poor monsters get kinda abused (if that makes sense). And there's still progress so you feel like playing SP and not DM on a small and (very) repetitive map.
