I remember being able to go to a flea market and buy NES games for like a dollar for 5 or at most 10 dollars a game depending on the game in the early 2000s. i like collecting but first edition autism is too much even for me. i just grab what i can find for cheap, pal copies, jap copies, platinum versions, sometimes cases are missing manuals. it's not perfect but it's good enough.

What you are doing is complaining that the rare and valuable items you want cost more than you would prefer because there are many people who also want those rare and valuable items for their collections. If what you want is to play the game there are plenty of ways to do that for a very low cost or nothing at all. If what you want is to personally own a piece of tech that is still in good shape and working 30 or 40 years after production then obviously that's going to have a cost associated with it.

There are still relatively few whales in the scene so it isn't really as bad as you guys think it is. Once more rich people, I mean genuinely rich not some tryhards you see online, enter the scene prices will sky rocket to unreasonable levels for almost everything. I was looking for Dreamcast games at the last convention I went to and I swear almost every table told me that one guy came in about everything Dreamcast. It's frustrating because rich people also get almost everything for free, sure they have to pay for it, but they usually buy in bulk with massive discounts. So they get the few things they want and flip the rest for profit. Honestly, if you're going to get into it now my advice is just to develop a very curated collection. I should have saved the picture but there is one anon here that has a curated collection that takes up one entire Ikea Billy bookcase. Has a ton of shmups, fighting games, rail shooters, mostly just games with high replayability and then a few of his personal favourites like Nier and MGS. But that is the way forward for anyone getting into collecting now.
The games worth playing (popular games) are the same or cheaper than they were pre-covid. Graded games with boxes are going up fast but non graded games that are not meme-of-the-month youtuber influenced are just fine. - River city ransom can be had for $25-$40 loose, at local retro game stores. It used to be like $60 at ita peak- Megaman 2 can be had for $25 or less.- Virtually every good genesis game is $20 or less>"But muh flintstones shovelwharebthat was never sold retail!"No one cared when it was new, only speculative investors care now.
