From the looks of it they're giving it the Star Fox treatment. If that's the case, then it'll be a pretty faithful remake. It'll be fine and the new generation can cherish and experience what we experienced.

>>
>>12805157
The idea of a "faithful" remake is retarded anyway. The most faithful thing you could do is to just preserve the original in its entirety. A remake is inherently unfaithful. Just make a completely new game, that's actually more worthwhile than dogshit "faithful" remakes like House of the Dead, Panzer Dragoon, Star Fox, Mario All-Stars (yes All-Stars is shit), the SNES Dragon Quest remakes and some of the other bad DQ remakes (some of them are cool), the Digital Devil Story remakes, Dead Rising, etc. All those games are just the originals but easier and with worse aesthetics, and maybe some new glitches to sprinkle on top. Good remakes, meanwhile, are Shadow of the Ninja Reborn, Wild Guns Reloaded, Pocky & Rocky Reshrined, etc, which do not overly concern themselves with being "faithful".
>>
>>12805182
The opinion that ocarina or the n64 as a whole are significant is held only by a shrinking and irrelevant population of millennial aged nerds. Zoomers greatly prefer PC, PlayStation and even Sega Saturn has had its historically poor reputation rewritten by the next generation.

My biggest problem is that the character designs are inconsistent and clash with the realismslop environments. Link looks like an uncanny creepypasta version of himself and everyone else ranges from higher fidelity version of the original to completely different with needless details. Why the fuck did they give the Deku flower enemies tongues and Zelda a big Jew nose, yet keep the townspeople so accurate the original? Everything should be like the latter. In fact, there's a moment in the Direct where they show the Amiibo masks of the original Link and Zelda models and they look better.
The environments don't look terrible in isolation but feel cluttered with unnecessary detail and are obscured by the excessive amount of fog. Seriously, why the fuck is there so much dust and fog? It even drops out of chests now like every chest has a block of dry ice in it.

Ocarina of Time never had any business being put on such a lofty pedestal and being treated as the greatest video game of all time by so many anyway. I will accept that it was an important game for the era but continuing to pretend now for 30 years that it was some flawless masterpiece without equal has always been a joke to anyway that isn't blinded by nostalgia and actually looks at games objectively. It's a good game but can we finally stop pretending it's the pinnacle of the hobby now?
>>
>>12805643
eyes don't work like that,
like isn't the center part black?
>>
>>12805717
You're right. Pupils are supposed to be black because they're the hole that lets light inside your eyeball, where it is absorbed by the layer in the back, which your brain translates into images. When a doctor does an eye exam and shines light into your eye, the pupil contracts but is still black; the center of Link's eyes here should be black and not a darker reflection of what he's looking at. The characters have black pupils in other parts of the video, so at least the modeler knows what eyes are supposed to look like, which leaves me thinking this is a fault of the lighting engine.
>>
>>12805732
Someone should alert Nintendo that they'll have to scrap the engine now, it can't do pupils.

its far too diverse and varied to easily or clearly pick one thing. its retarded to think there would be a clear and easy answer like that. however, it is easy to cut massive swathes of content that clearly have no business being in the conversation. you can easily cut out anything 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 5th generation.
>>
>>12805053
So aside from the voice acting, the remade orchestral soundtrack, and the hyper-realistic graphics, it's set to pretty much be a 1:1 remake in terms of gameplay progression, maps, and dungeon design, right? I have to say I kind of have a problem with this. If it's ultimately still going to play exactly like the 5th-gen game that it is, what's the point of updating all the aesthetics to 9th-gen standards? I wasn't too fond of the 3DS remaster's graphics myself, but at least that still made more sense as a facelift, while still more or less retaining the look of the original. This looks excessive and overindulgent, and just makes me wish they'd have made an entirely new game instead, or if they absolutely had to remake OoT, go the route of a reimagining that would make it more its own thing. It could be they add some new stuff, but if the Starfox 64 remake is anything to go by, I won't hold my breath.

Why is there always a dude like you who thinks he's hot shit but is total retard huh. Explain where they make you people
>>
>>12806079
And just to clarify, no, I'm not arguing the better thing to have done necessarily is to make it like BotW or like typical AAA FOCUS M slop. I'm saying everything about OoT's design was a product of its era and of the tech limitations of the time, and for me, there's a mismatch when you focus only on updating the graphics and such to modern standards, when ultimately it's probably still going to be a relatively small world with constrained areas and a limited number of places to go and NPCs to interact with. Again, that worked for OoT, but IF it ends up being 1:1 for the most part, well, I just think all that fidelity kind of goes to waste. But we'll see.
>>
>>12806076
5th gen mogs the fuck out of 4th and 6th gen combined. Only things like highly polished fighting games (Tekken 5, Smash:Melee) and the like are done better in 6th, and for 4th gen only Super Metroid is uniquely better than anything that came after.
>>
>>12806093

I don't think it's possible to fully appreciate Ocarina of Time unless you played it in 1998.

My grandma saw the Wizard of Oz for the first time when it came out, and I remember her talking about how magical it was to see the first full-color movie. The movie itself totally plays up this new dimension (the boring real world was grayscale, color appears when Dorothy gets to Oz). I've seen this movie many times now, I watched it with my kid, I can appreciate it in all kinds of ways, but I'll never experience the shock of seeing color for the first time.

It's hard to overstate how much 3D videogames sucked when Ocarina of Time came out. The best one by far was Mario 64, and (no shade) it felt very abstract and surreal. OoT was the first game that really captured the possibility of 3D and felt like it transported you to this other world. And it does this in a very self-aware way, like the Wizard of Oz did with color—Navi serving as the camera focus for Z-targeting, with all these 3-D puzzles that would not be possible in top-down games.

Stupid AI post. The truth was that the first gen of 3D felt clumsy and uglier. You had almost no control over the camera, textures were blurry like smeared shit. It felt like a downgrade from the fine 2D graphics of the SNES. But it still was Zelda, so you played it and to some extent you enjoyed it.
>>
>>12805053

They added a jump button? To be honest I always hated that I couldn't jump whenever I wanted in the original. It's truly amazing how the entire identity of OoT was being the first game that played itself. Automated actions, lockon that makes positioning meaningless (and makes it so only one enemy focuses on you, further simplifying combat), Navi, etc etc. Truly the first modern game, I can see how it's influential now, but that's not a positive.

I think it's possible to recreate it if you really commit to it. If a person were to play through all of Zelda 1, 2, ALttP, and LA in order, and then boot up Ocarina for the first time, I bet it'd feel pretty magical.
Most people won't, and that's okay. I don't need everyone else to relive my childhood.

That's my take on every single remake that's come out in the last five years.
"Why didn't you just use all this technology to make a brand new game?"

If you make a new game and it's at least kinda fun, that's +1 fun games in the world.
If you make a remake, even if it's so perfect and it's so much better than the original that the only reason a person'd go back to the first version is for the historical value, the number of fun games hasn't changed. You just shifted the audience from one game to the other.
And it goes without saying that I'd be really surprised if any remake was even close to being that good.

Well we had a chance for Nintendo to finish the n64 trilogy on the DS or 3ds when they remastered them the first time. While I agree I’d rather see them use these resources to make a totally new game but if this does really well and they remake Majoras mask and that does really well maybe they will push ahead w a third game in this style. For good or bad I’ve always been curious what the quest link was on for Zelda when he was interrupted by the skull kid and sucked into Termina I’d love to see them use these as a way to justify making a third in this style. That’s my hope anyway. Companies are so risk averse though so you get remakes like this instead of a brand new game because on OoT especially there is a high floor of automatic sales and this may even be a major system seller where as a brand new game in this style wouldn’t push systems like big name Ocarina of Time would absolutely sell them. Anyway while I agree I think the remake looks awesome.
>>
>>12805703
I guess my counterpoint would be, what was a better fantasy adventure game visually and mechanically from that year or prior for that console in your opinion? I'm not saying youre wrong by any means but this was kind of like, the first "big" adventure game for a lot of people, so it does have alot of expectations in terms of a remake. I don't think it doesn't deserve the following it has, but I'll agree it's not on the ZOMG YOU NEVER PLAYED OOT IT'S THE BEST GAME EVER pedestal make for it.
>>
>>12806587
I definitely feel that way about that the Resident Evil games. I hate how Capcom is systematically replacing every game in the series and is just making the remakes the default versions now. So many people will never touch the original Playstation games now even though they offer very different and fun experiences to the remakes. The original 4 is starting to get buried now and soon the remake of Code Veronica will be the defacto version of that game too.
>>
>But also fact of the matter, Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time are the two of the three greatest games of all time, together with FF7
>>
Ah yes that time when all the best games of all time released in a span of two years by coincidence. It wasn't that you were 12 back then.
>>
>>12806654
For someone that existed solely in the Nintendo ecosystem it definitely would have been an good experience at the time sure but I'd argue Tomb Raider was just as influential and good of a game but it doesn't get put on nearly as high of a pedestal. Fable as well from just a few years later easily deserves as much praise as Zelda.
>>
MILK those franchises Nintendo. You capitalist PIGS.
>>
Why is the conversation always so biased towards consoles when discussing the best games ever anyway? Stuff like Doom and Half Life gets praised sure but there are so many fantastic PC games from the 90's and 2000's that barely ever get mentioned like Diablo 2 and X-Com that are still great to go back and play even now
>>
>>12805053
zelda was never good

t. dropped oot 3ds remake halfway through cuz it was boring
>>
>>12806713
Tomb Raider was slept on but desu I didn't play it as a kid. Only reason for limiting this argument to one console tho is because most people weren't multi-console homes. I had one N64 in the basement and basically just progressing as the years went on never really a simultaneous generation console.

Fable was great tho and I actually consider Fable and Fable 2 to be my favorite "classic" or retro fantasy adventure game that isn't an Elder Scrolls entry. but what the actual was that ending to Fable 2? Seriously it sucked but the rest of the game was fucking great

At the end of the day I feel like the only people who put that OoT cartridge up on their shelf as their peak, is honestly kind of the type of person that just has to have THE most expensive thing, or they're in retro gaming for the collection aspect and not necessarily because they even like the games. I don't mind it, it was a great game but I appreciate it when people have more "weird" choices for their best N64 games let alone their goat retro game
>>
>>12806713
>Tomb Raider was just as influential and good of a game
I hold the original TR in a high regard and was certainly influential, but for way different reasons. Very different games in which the only similar thing is they were early full 3D entries in gaming that did it well.
>>
>>12806728
Blast Corps and Shadows of the Empire were always my favorite N64 games. It gets boring always hearing about Mario and Zelda when discussing this console. Ocarina of Time just never really impressed me that much. I had more fun playing Crusin' USA at the time
>>
>>12806721
Gayming journalists (the same one who call you entitled for criticising shit games) didn't play them + the average 90s burger kid didn't have a good PC for gayming/was too tech illiterate.

>>12806713
>Tomb Raider was just as influential and good of a game but it doesn't get put on nearly as high of a pedestal
Tomb Raider is a classic, but Ocarina is definitely a game on a much higher level of ambition than it.

Tomb Raider was a pioneer of 3D, which nails its atmosphere of isolation and has some great level design yes, Cistern is definitely better than the Water Temple, no disagreement there. But Tomb Raider is next to OoT a quite primitive and clunky game consisting of a series of levels in a set order with no larger over-world or connective tissue, environment geometry that is limited to grid based structures that are static besides collapsing floors, basic gunplay and limited weapon selection compared to later games in its own series, and no way to gain additional abilities or interact with other characters etc.

It's a damn perfectly fine game, but Ocarina pushed things to a whole other level beyond it and is just much more refined in most ways.
>>
>>12806748
>But Tomb Raider is next to OoT a quite primitive and clunky game
Apples and pizzas
You don't even do any platforming on OoT. Everything is automated. The remake adds a jump button and suddenly OG players are crying. OoT is the first modern game (that's not a positive).
>>
>>12806742
I had other games I enjoyed and spent more time on on the N64, but OoT was something I remember being vividly influential. I remember thinking how big Hyrule Field was and just being like "damn this is cool" I think it was when I became adult Link I really appreciated the game more and the story got more interesting and I realized "oh shit this is a long game" and how time interacted with the puzzles. It felt like a deep game.

That being said my goat for N64 is none other than Harvest Moon 64. Honorable mentions tho are definitely BassHunter 64 and Big Mountain 2000
>>
>>12806752
>You don't even do any platforming on OoT.
Tomb Raider execute platforming problems much better than OoT does, that is it's forte and main strength. Both games thankfully share the "jumping automatically happens when you reach the edge" mechanic that makes previsions jumps easier. Bus OoT is hardly a slouch mechanically since you can do super interesting stuff with hover boots, bombchus etc. even if the game never mandates this.

To attempt to explain why OoT gets really insane praise though, Tomb Raider is great as it is, but OoT has this quality, subjective as it may be, of really sparking your imagination in particular ways nothing else really does to the same extent, and that's why you hear people resort to using the term 'magical' and things like that. The way the environments are constructed and presented to you emphasizes both their contrast and connection with each other in ways that make everything feel like this greater total reality, and where you're aware of ow things change and differ over various time scales. This is the *thing* that takes it from something the people think of as pretty innovative and awesome, to being the outright, sole GOAT in their minds.

Tomb Raider is great at setting up interesting intRA-level structure, but the intER-area structure and presentation of OoT is what sets it apart.
>>
>>12805636
looks off.
can't put my finger on it, but there is something wrong with her look compared to OG and even 3D.
also, everyone looks so shiny like they are sweating non-stop.
>>
>>12806748
>consisting of a series of levels in a set order
laughably irrelevant
>no larger over-world or connective tissue
oot consists of rooms and doors. the theming creates the illusion of a world and connective tissue. hyrule field is just a large room with a few doors. you go through a "door" and it triggers loading a specific room. just because this specific game lets you systematically traverse the whole house at will does mean that a game consisting of very different level and plot design is "more primitive". you're literally kidding yourself if you think that oot isnt a primitive, clunky MESS. is tomb raider perhaps more "simple"? sure. but that "complexity" isnt really doing oot many favors when all of those added aspects are ALL clunky, dull, or irrelevant tech demos.
>>
>>12806767
>really sparking your imagination in particular ways nothing else really does to the same extent, and that's why you hear people resort to using the term 'magical' and things like that.
its just people playing it when they were kids (and getting to experience 3d as a new novelty and being optimistic for the potential of the medium) and glazing their nostalgia. all of that "quality" that they drone on and on about is entirely made up bullshit in their own heads.

The Star Fox thing annoys me to no end. It’s a shmup from a different perspective. If there could be 10 decent Konami games using the Gradius formula and at least 3-4 great Darius games, then how the fuck has Nintendo thought there could only be the first two SNES games and 64 and run so low on new ideas that they have to resort to gimmicks or endless remakes of 64 for the rest of time?

Like just come up with a literal 30 minute Saturday morning cartoon plot vaguely inspired by Star Wars, dream up a couple dozen ideas for planets and one little hook for each to make them interesting, and boom, instant iterative sequel that’s probably at least halfway decent.

Supposedly it's due to Miyamoto being adamant about sequels not just being more of the same. New games in a series need to have some central innovation (read: gimmick) for a sequel to be warranted*.

*NOTE: Does not apply to Mario or Zelda because of course.

>>
>>12805053
It's a common misconception but companies can't actually "ruin" something old by releasing something new. The old game is still out there, ready to be played in its authentic form. It's like saying the new Star Wars movies can ruin the old ones, or how some gay Amazon series can ruiin Tolkien.

None of it's true. All these idiotic companies can do is ruin their own profit margins. It seems inevitable that the OOT remake will be done partially with AI, that's the trend. It could be a disaster. Or it might be OK. But companies who subsist mainly on remakes and their traditional, and often dated IP? They are at risk of stagnation, if all you do is chubby plumbers, little hamsters, and cutesy Zeldas you might have a problem if tastes shift or people lose interest. Where's fuckin' Droopy Dog or The Pink Panther now? Those niggers were HUGE back in the day.

>mario 1 and 2
its pretty similar, but they have new things like bad warps, poison mushroom, and luigi controlling differently.
>3 and world
complete aesthetic change, a lot of different mechanics. not really one precise gimmick exactly, other than i guess yoshi.
>oot/mm
as i said before, mask and time shit.
>botw/totk
almost identical in core gameplay, but the powers are completely different. the fuse and building mechanic is wildly different and a major gimmick focus.
>oracles
a pair
>minish cap
not familiar with it honestly. most likely you're forgetting some core gimmick/focus, given the franchise's list and how you've missed so many already.
>la/lttp/lbw
link's awakening is just lttp but handheld. thats it. thats the gimmick. lbw, as i said before, has item renting and wall walking.

>star fox
oh i agree, its fucking weird how they have to just keep putting out the same one rail shooter, never changing anything but visuals. adventure doesnt count because it was literally another game (and still is that game) before they slapped fox into it, making it a star fox game in character cosmetic only.

Oh sweet summer child, it can happen. They can delist the old game, make it impossible to play it (legally) unless you already have it, if the new game shares the same name then it becomes increasingly difficult to find info and art of the old game, you can be talking to someone about the game and he starts spouting something that doesn't make apparent sense until you realize he's talking about the remake. It can definitely damage the old game if the remake becomes popular enough, it has happened with RE games already IMO.

Remakes can't damage the old game, though. Maybe people don't play the old game as much but the old game sits proud and intact, damage-free. Even if ignored or the discourse shifts to a remake.

One good example is Marathon, I recently learned that they made a new Marathon game, but it doesn't seem to be at all the same as old Marathon. But nu-Marathon like most modern games will have its server shut down some day and nobody will play it. OTOH the original Marathon for Mac (and there's a new engine for playing on new computers) will live on as a spooky haunted AI-centered fiction masterpiece and people will play it decades from now either under emulation or with the new engine.

Right now when people talk about Marathon on here, it's not about Marathon, but nu-Marathon and that will fade as the game loses players, eventually the shills will move on too.

We’re splitting hairs to an absurd degree here. Every sequel outside of a Ubisoft far cry / asscreed or cod (and even then there’s probably a lot of exceptions) is a sequel that justifies itself by brimming with innovation according to your standards. Star Fox 64 is 30 years old, I’d hope the difference between a current year sequel and it would at least be as much as Super Mario World is to SMB3. I just don’t get why they insist that making a normal sequel is impossible and the only logical progression for the series is to pivot to a new genre entirely or add mechanics that make the game twice as complicated and almost unrecognizable.

How the fuck did they scree MM so bad when OoT3D was actually really good (cherrypicked lighting collages aside)

I can imagine how all those executive board meetings go.
>"uhhhhh, what do we do nao?"
>"I KNOW, we'll remake Zelda AGAIN!"

Twilight Princess is the real Ocarina of Time Remake
>>
>>12811295
I prefer it being a progress bar, it helps me readily see the big picture of where I am on the cycle.
>>
>>12811254
Ocarina of Time, like it or not, has reached a next level legendary status. Nothing will ever replace the original. At least not while the generation raised on it is alive and by the time they all die off there will be more time between the og release and the remake, and that generation passing on. If there was one game that can be remade a thousand times and the og still be loved it’s Ocarina.

>If there was one game that can be remade a thousand times and the og still be loved it’s Ocarina.
Ok your bait got too obvious with this one
>>
>>12811637
Yeah I don't really think wither Ocarina remake or Gta6 look that different from 7th gen but whatever, normies call it good graphics is what I mean.
I prefer 2D (and good actual retro 2D from the 80s and 90s, not modern indieslop)
>>
>>12805053
Nah
>>
The remake isn’t even out yet
>>
>>12805053
No one is taking this game away, the 3ds remake didn't kill the game, its still easily accessible in this incarnation.

I think Nintendo panicked once OoT N64 version was de-compiled to PC. It's capable of mods and fixes that weren't possible with emulation before. The fan UE5 remakes of this game was just inspiration for the direction to take. Smash Bros Melee and Soul Calibur 2 was the true intention for the art style for Link in OoT. Pic related is Ai but it's very close to how he should be portrayed.
>>
>>12812669
And Nintendo should not be afraid to keep some trends for the time period the game was set in. For example, the Hylian shield. It was not a rare shield but one you can freely purchase from the store because it was more of a common shield for the time used by the royal guards and soldiers. The real prize/treasure was the Gerudo mirror shield.

>instead of following what westerners want
The last two Zelda games are just ubislop open world games complete with pointless collectibles and copy-pasted activities(shrines)
>>
>>12812697
Now imagine all that with a gritty main character.
The fact Zelda can succeed in the west despite Link not looking like a though guy is the anomaly.
>>
>>12812729
>despite Link not looking like a though guy is the anomaly.
Astro Bot not only was a success commercially but also won game of the year and that game was cutesy and a platformer, stop drinking the Nintendo koolaid
>>
>>12812740
>stop drinking the Nintendo koolaid
Huh?
Aren't the Astro Bot games the actual Nintendo fans?
I never said anything about being a Nintendo fan myself (more of a Sega guy if anything). Just saying how Nintendo refused to design Link in the way westerners want.
Yeah not all characters have to be gritty, Silksong was also popular, but Zelda in particular is a kind of game westerns have been wanting gritty design since forever.

wut

So does Nintendo, MM and TP are desperately trying to be as dark as possible
>>
>>12812760
>wut
I meant to say developers
>So does Nintendo, MM and TP are desperately trying to be as dark as possible
I'm nit talking about themes, atmosphere etc, but straight up character design.
Nintendo always double down on remaining cute or at least not 100% western-gritty with Zelda.
>>
>>12812764
>Nintendo always double down on remaining cute or at least not 100% western-gritty with Zelda.
what is western gritty to you? just making everything brown and bloom? because if that's your definition then TP already is as western as it comes
>>
>>12812767
Dude you even reading? CHARACTER design. TP characters are still very cute and märchen-like. People want something like a Dark Souls character for example, a game famously inspired by western fantasy like Zelda, but with even more western sensibilities down to the way the character models look. Zelda still uses anime eyes.

If you told me this guy came from a Souls game I'd believe it

Why do people want Zelda to be something it's not?
It's like everybody's takeaway from Ocarina of Time is "I really fucking LOVE Tolkien" and nothing else
>>
>>12812775
Sure, re-deads too. But let's see something you see more often like Link himself.
>>12812776
It's a western caprice.
>>
>>12812776
>Why do people want Zelda to be something it's not?
the audience is not the one who decided the radical shift from WW to TP, and TP to SS, and SS to BOTW/TOTK

Hi Fi Rush was very popular in the west and the character design is neither anime nor "western gritty"
>>
>>12812791
>Hi Fi Rush was very popular in the west
...really? First time I'm hearing about it.
Anyway I'm not saying westerners don't EVER use more cartoon styles, just that for a game like Zelda specifically they want gritty realism. Nintendo is bringing realism but not grittiness, they stull keep a quota of japanese cute/whim that fucks with western cognition
>>
>>12812791
So popular they closed the studio
>>
>>12812797
>...really? First time I'm hearing about it.
>90 on MC
>3M copies sold for a new IP
So now we're discussing in bad faith
>just that for a game like Zelda specifically they want gritty realism.
Who is saying that, Nintendo is the only one who wants to push grittiness on the series
>but the character design
With this mentality I'd be inclined to think you believe Happy Tree Friends is actually a kid's show
>>
>>12805157
>watch the video from the guy that lies about games and can't play anything other than shmups
LMAO
>>
>>12812810
Not bad faith dude, legit never heard of it. Good for them I guess.
>>12812810
>With this mentality
It's not my mentality, I'm just saying people in the west want a gritty design for Link and Nintendo refuses, independently of at the same time having gruesome enemy design of bleak atmosphere.
Japanese media is more likely to have a mix of gruesome/mature themes mixed with cute designs (look at Osamu Tezuka stuff), the west is more about either being cute/childish or adult/gritty, stuff like HTF or South Park enters the comedy parody spectrum

I still dont see these people who want a gritty design for Link, at best you have people who were upset by Toon Link but that's because they were expecting something more akin to the promo video for the GC

They've been there since the 2000s at the very least.

Where, the best proof is the one I mentioned which was something more enclosed with the fandom itself and not the west
