How was it to play Ocarina of Time, in 1998, as a kid?
>>12805783Meh it was alright. If you already played games like tomb raider and mega man legends it felt like a little step up in some ways, a step down in some ways and was ultimately a pretty strong 6/10.
>>12805783It was awesome, I deified it and looked up ocarina of time fanart on zelda fansites after school
>>12805783A great coming of age story and adventure to experience as a kid.
>>12805783Magical. It was on steroids for a 3D game for sure. We got our beak's wet with Super Mario 64, but this took it to another level where the two year gap of games didn't. It felt like Zelda right from the start screen all the way through, but also new. Puzzles took advantage of 3D unlike what was possible in 2D. You had to think like you were really there in the world, unlike playing in the 2D rule confines. Exploration was incredible, and left plenty of room for imagination, which was what made those early 3D games so good. My only complain then, and my only complaint still to this day was the ending felt rushed and lackluster compared to SM64 or Zelda LttP which were obviously made with care and as if the developers knew these were special games so we are going to give you a special ending. Also the NPCs art style was kind of iffy. Overall it's a 9.5 to this day, but I'd rate it a 9.8-9 back in the day, easily.
>>12805783If you weren't an American millennial from an Evangelical household, you didn't give a shit.
>>12805783Surprisingly weak. SM64 transported you to fun, unfamiliar, intensely interesting worlds. OoT didn’t land on the world building as well, particularly in a year that was a standout for that exact thing.
>>12805783It's probably the game from my childhood I have the most memory of. I never beat it, but I got pretty far, and me and all my brothers played it, and I remember this kid down the street who was a bit older we thought was some godgamer because he helped us out. It just felt so magical and surreal, just about every song in the game is etched deep in my brain
it was okay. desu we never thought it was something special. it's still shocking to see it's rated the best game of all time. like we had more fun with WWF No mercy
>get 25 threads for 'anniversary'>constant new threadsnobody likes the look of the new ocarina preview and nobody's gonna buy it because of shilling on /vr/
>>12805783A disappointment.
>>12805783Magical. Nothing ever like it at the time
>>12805783it was meh which is why it is irrelevant game and why you are not making a thread about it now in 2026
>>12805919I enjoyed Heretic 2 more even though they're not exactly the same genre, they were both 3D third person games. OOT just felt like a 3D Link to the Past to me, with jankier combat due to the low framerate.
>>12805783It was an experience like no other at the time. Introduced many things that simply didn't exist in gaming. Many fond memories.
>>1280578310/10 experience. Remake is looking fine too
>>12805830>You had to think like you were really there in the world, unlike playing in the 2D rule confines.Holy shit!
>>12805783The most disappointing shit of my life. Came off ALttP to a bare bones Hyrule Field expecting every inch of the over world to be packed instead of the barren shit I got. Shitty dungeons with eye switches and blocks hidden in 3d perspective that needed a single slide, hit or toggle as opposed to the sprawling multi room puzzles in ALttP. Finished it the week it came out and decided it was the most over hyped garbage I had ever played. It still holds that title to this day.
It was a great game but I don’t remember it being life changing. Seeing Golden Sun’s battle system for the first time, doing full 3D on a handheld at launch day, had more of an impact like that
>>12805783Quite good, it was my first truly 3d game I was a kid at the time. I see anons here using the word "magical" this is an accurate description. I had never really played anything like it up to that point. The most 3d like game prior to that for me was Wolfenstein 3D and I never got the N64 until 1998. So it was something completely new. I remember going to the Odyssey of Hyrule website and being amazed at all the new discoveries and glitches. The Internet itself was a marvel as it was also new. The 90's were an exciting and good time for me. I feel blessed to have experienced it
Imagine making another Ocarina thread when we already have one. Subhuman behavior
>>12806032>Came off ALttP to a bare bones Hyrule Field expecting every inch of the over world to be packed instead of the barren shit I got.Why is every LttP fan so stupid? OoT is packed with way more shit to discover than LttP is, just most of it isn't in the field and even then the field alone actually has more stuff to find than most of LttP does.
>>12805783It came out when I was 19, so technically never. To me it seemed like a well-made game, just slow-paced and not as exciting as I'd hoped.
>>12806378They aren't stupid, you fail to understand their perspective and standards. It's not about having a large laundry list of lame things to find padded out by long stretches of walking simulation (Hyrule Field is not the sole offender here, the whole game is slow, the field is just the easiest most obvious thing to point at). It's about consistent action.
>>12806539I guess you're right. I really don't understand your perspective.Ocarina of Time is a walking simulator now? What?
>>12805783There was ALWAYS somebody in the dorm room commons playing the fishing game.
>>12806604Compare it to alttp objectively and you will see (if you aren't cognitively impaired)
>>12806625>>12806604Zoomers can’t handle the 20 seconds walking in hyrule field
>>12806705>zoomersI'm 47. Most people who loved alttp as a kid but were disappointed by Ocarina are probably in their late 40sThe bottom line is that 20 seconds of walking simulation is still 20 seconds of walking simulation that alttp doesn't have. Even when you're just walking from one place to another on the map, you have to avoid enemies and hazards. Ocarina rests on the immersive aesthetics of the 3D scenery passing by. The feeling of moving about an alternate reality just by holding down a direction on the analog stick. It's a different audience. I understand you. You don't understand me.
>>12806807LttP looks like a game version of Playmobil. Just like you call Ocarina blinded by kid nostalgia, you yourself are blinded by Lttp nostlagia. Lttp is ass, it's literally worse than every game before and after it. Including Zelda 2
>>12806850You're trying way too hard, assblasted millennial.I merely made objective observations about Ocarina that you can't handle. It's unsurprising, given that millennials have chronically high levels of narcissism coupled with cripplingly low critical reasoning skills. Thank the self-esteem movement and feminism.
I first played it on ultra HLE in may 1999. There was some cube glitch in the forest temple, but it was solved by restoring a previous state. I very much enjoyed the game. I really like the water and sandchigger temples.
>>12806904>trying too hard>I wanna shit on Ocarina but I'm not gonna try too hard!Stfu. You're 40 years old and still a retard
>>12806916>40Wait it's 47 not 40. KekOcarina > Lttp (and it's not close)
>>12805783It's crazy how this game seemed to be some hundreds of hours long epic as a kid, I seem to recall me and my brothers playing it for months on end, and I still think we didn't ever beat it. Yeah, but honestly greatest game of all time. There is a reason it is a 99 MetaCritic and heralded as the GOAT, it really is. Of course the contrarians come out of the woodwork, but it is what it is.
>>12805836>OoT didn’t land on the world building as wellIts the exact opposite. They took the empty hyrule landscape of the old NES game and massively fleshed it out with cultures, ancient history, factions, and re-defined core zelda characters that have been retained ever since:>princess zelda acrually does something in the game, and adopts her alter ego(Sheik) to help link>link finally has a back story and a hometown>first time we got to actually enter andexplore hyrule castle>goron race and culture made its debut in their stone mountain>gerudo women warriors in the desert culture made their debut>zora fish people and their princess debut>deku sentient trees and sprouts debut>great fairy (as giant earth goddess women) appear, differentiating them from previous tiny healing fairies. All future zelda games leaned heavily on the world building established here.
>>12806916You're trying too hard to offend me.All I did was point out that Ocarina is a slower-paced game with a lot of walking simulation, when compared to ALTTP. This is an objective comparison. Nobody has actually contradicted the point or even made any effort to refute it. But wow, are you losers steaming mad about it.
>>12806950Yeah cause that doesn't mean anythingLttP also has walking in it, turns out. And a lot of it
>>12806610My memories of thr game are from college dorms as well. I had a playstation at the time but several friends had N64s and tge game nearly cost one friend the entire semester. Its hard to really describe how huge tomb raider, FF7, goldeneye and zelda were on campus. For like a year straight you went to someones room, it was one of these four games (unless they were on PC).Zelda and FF7 were generation defining games.
>>12805783Unironically magical, the world seemed absurdly huge and complex for a kid. I jumped from NES straight to N64 so the difference was just insane.
>>12805797>translation: I am a huge cock juggling dick eating and sucking faggot
When did you find out that the Link from Twilight Princess is the son maybe grandson of the Hero of Time and Malon?
>>12807051To this day I deny the zelda timeline.>autist spends decades publishing fa fiction timeline for unrelated games>nintendo is constantly bothered by retards who keep asking about it>"ok the timeline is real fuck off and never speak of it again. We're busy">autists resume timeline fuckery with other series like donkey kong
>>12807062Malon won all the clues are in Twilight Princess
>>12806959>Yeah cause that doesn't mean anythingOf course it does. It's important to people who like action games.>LttP also has walking in it, turns out. And a lot of itWillful stupidity, ignoring a simple obvious point already made.in alttp, "walking" is always navigating the world. You're always dodging enemies or making decisions about where to go. There's constant gameplay feedback when you move. There's never a point where you just hold down one direction on the control pad and watch for 30 seconds as your character runs to a distant point in the world. That happens CONSTANTLY in Ocarina of Time.>Leave Hyrule castle>30 seconds roll spam run to lon lon ranch>20 seconds to run to talk to Malon>2 minutes on Melon/Epona cutscene>20 seconds to run back>45 seconds roll spam run to kokiri forest (ignore peahat)>20 seconds to run/climb to lost woods>35 seconds running through lost woods (45 second owl dialog not included)>finally reach a place where some combat happensAnd this is all someone who has played Ocarina before and knows exactly what he wants to be doing next. This type of pattern just doesn't happen in ALTTP.
>>12807116That is a very inauthentic way of playing that you are describing, akin to a person who watched a dozen walkthrough videos and speedruns before ever daring to play it yourself. Real players mill about, thry fight random enemies for no real purpose, they wander around the field to see if there is other stuff to see. They wander to the bridge(no access yet), fight some stuff nearby for rupees, hit a point where they cant proceed and wander back to the castle. Just dicking around casually and enjoying the adventure. We were young and in no rush, and nothing stops modern younger gamers from doing the same. You need to quit watching other people play games on youtube and actually play more games going in blind. The video game version of "touch grass".
It turned me gay and I became an ugly troon who hates his(her?) life and now all I want to do is make the same shitty stupid fucking threads over and over again on a mongolian basket weaving forum
>>12807116Action games? When does the "action" happen in this pathetic excuse for a game? I get more "action" dangling my balls and a slice of pizza in front of your fat pig mother
>>12807231You're disgusting.
>>12807262I don't think this is the right website for you.
>>12807278I've been here longer than you've been dipping your balls in oregano and pizza grease.
>>12807230why are you here, genuinely? Feel like you'd be happier if you left this godforsaken site behind. Its not even good anymore
>>12807363Look out everyone! We got an oldfag here! Hide your children! Absolutely pathetic
>>12807387Oh another witty inflammatory post. Yawn.
Pinapple on pizza sucks.
>>12805783Sounds corny, but it was magical
>>12807227No sentient person who has actually played both Ocarina and ALTTP, would disagree that a player spends far more time in Ocarina of Time "just walking" than they do in ALTTP. It's not even a reasonable dispute. >>12807227>That is a very inauthentic way of playingIn fact, your objection is hilarious because the "inauthentic style" was already called out in the post as NOT favoring the point. In reality, the player actually spends a whole lot MORE than 30 second stretches just wandering around in 3D looking at the scenery.>Real players mill aboutRight. Walking simulation.>they fight random enemies for no real purpose,No, they don't, because there are so few enemies to be found. That's the main difference. In ALTTP, playing the same """inauthentic""" style, you'll see the player encounter dozens of enemies just crossing the world. (In "normal" style, the player will probably fight most of them).>You need to quit watching other people play games on youtube and actually play more games going in blind.I seem to be the only one who has actually played both games. Youtube examples just provide hard, measurable data.
>>12807035I get it, you love dick but that's weird and gay.
