PowerSlave is an iconic Saturn game that received a less than stellar PS1 port, however it came out so early that they were still using clear case longboxes during game manufacturing. The early days of the console, when the limits were unknown and the possibilities? Endless.

PowerSlave however is interesting, it never released on longboxes. The photo is from a SCE produced tour demonstrating how PlayStation discs are manufactured, available from one of their demo disks. Clearly these are longboxes for Powerslave, yet the game only arrived on store shelves in jewel cases.

To be at this stage of manufacturing where likely hundreds, maybe thousands of copies are produced in these colossal longboxes surely they must exist somewhere out there? Were they all recalled? Released only in a controlled press-exclusive sense? Something thrown together for a promotional video?

The incredible mystery of the PowerSlave Longbox. What are your thoughts?

Source? what's the date on this?

It's hard to make out with this picture but comparing to other longboxes it doesn't look like any real one that came out, not even the Ridge Racer type

also Powerslave didn't come out early on PSX, it came out in March 1997, didn't they completely stop using longboxes by the end of 96?
>>
also is that rating on the top left even correct? Here is the released version for comparison. If you can get a better picture and find out if the SLUS code is correct too this could help make sure this was jusn't just a test print.

Adjusted your picture to show it's just a regular jewel case not a longbox, and their videocamera lens simply distorted it.

That makes more sense, the rounded bit at the bottom that hold the manual, longboxes don't have those

Powerslave came out for PlayStation on April 9, 1997.
The last game to be released in a long box was Tecmo World Golf on July 10, 1996.
>>
well that was a waste of time

I don't know. I thought it was fun for a couple minutes.

Well while we are here, go play Powerslave, it's a really fun game. I recommend Powerslave Exhumed on GoG

Anticlimactic answer, sure, but I think it's better to have posts about potential weird shit than to post the same threads about the same handful of games.

holy shit some marketing intern put a game's outside packaging into the packaging they were gonna use but they switched to a lower cost package and the game shipped in that!

whew this is a big part of gaming history!

Doesn't bother me at all but this type of thing can easily be explained, there's no mystery at all. They had the cover art for the game prepared already, it was going to go in one type of package, but they ended up changing to a different package.

i hate these tall boxes why did they make them it cant fit on my cd rack, i bought a mystery box of ps1 games from america a few weeks back and it came with one. also why are ps1 game cases so thin in america they suck here in england and japan also theyre like 1-2cm thick
>>
>>12813376
>why did they make them
There wasn't a real standard for game packaging back then. Sega were using the larger cases for Sega CD and Saturn games presumably as a way to make them stand out better on a shelf (and said shelves were already designed for Genesis cases and NES/SNES boxes, all larger than regular CD cases). Sony were using three distinct versions of their long boxes (a large jewel case - identical to Sega CD and Saturn cases, a large plastic case with ridges on the hinged side - a larger version of the Q-Pack CD case, and a simple cardboard case of the same dimensions) before just switching to standard CD jewel cases likely as a cost-cutting and standardization move (manuals and labels are now smaller and a foam insert isn't required).
>why are ps1 game cases so thin
They're the same as standard CD jewel cases. The jewel case was designed to be as compact as possible when it was invented in 1982. They're made from polystyrene and they're brittle as fuck.

yes but i dont get why they did those in america when here in england they did nice thicker cases, they did the same ones in japan. americans were robbed
>>
>>12813474
I'd imagine that it was solely a money saving measure done by SCEA. It'd cost a lot more for them to set up and manufacture their own bespoke CD cases than to just use ones that are already readily available.
>>
>>12813474
>>12813474
they're brittle as fuck though, almost as bad as PAL dreamcast cases. And the US versions have the cool inside art. PAL was robbed as always.
