I've noticed a persistent campaign here where people recommend the worst ports of games. It's weird. People actually recommend:>Japanese Wizardry (they all have cheating features)>Nintendo Ultimas>Morrowind on xboxetc.Who's doing this?
>who's doing this?Me.
>hey the gold box games are pretty coo->HEY DIDJA KNOW YOU CAN PLAY ON NINTENDO? OH MAN THE AURA OF PLAYING A GAME LIKE THIS ON NINTENDO MUST BE SAVORED
You are taking a wrong approach, my friend. If someone is a true gaming afficionado he WILL try all the different ports to enjoy the game in a different way! What with all the tiny minutia that make a change? For sure arcade conversions are inferior in principal, however you learn to appreciate the coding that went thru, the little things that they did while bounded with limitations. In other words, you play all the ports for their soul. As a fan of a series, I want to experience all the nooks and crannies!
>>12807019Some ports are just awful or insulting, or feature poor gameplay. I can see booting them up to experience that for a laugh. But just for a little while.
Yeah I remember the guy who swears by the arcade version of Contra, that was pretty funny>t. Saturn Quake guy
Nintendo Ultima 3 is alright. The vibe is all wrong and jrpg but in exchange, it works great with a nes controller
It will never not be funny every time Saturn SOTN shows up.
>>12806996>>12807073U4 is the best on NES, music and graphics shit all over the other versions
>>12807085U4 Mockingboard music is great and there now patches for GM music which blows away NES.It's not even the same game at all. The amazing thing is Origin signed off on the NES games at all.Japanese home computers got great ports of Ultima though. Apparently Ultima V for X68k is the best out of all versions, has mouse support, redrawn graphics, etc. But I can't find it anywhere. I don't have an X68k computer either but I could get the disks read in and emulate for sure.
There are still people recommending the N64 version of RE2 after several anons went in detail in how shit it isRecommending the Dreamcast versions of 2 and 3 is also ridiculous considering they're LITERALLY the PC versions but with the worse loading times of any version and fucked up background colours
I usually recommend interesting versions of games to fans such as saturn quake. Personally I have been trying to play less on PC so for many multiplats I've played console versions. Max Payne on xbox? Awesome. HL2? interesting but very rough with some cool elements like no stutter, nice audio effects and a sort of stuck in time build of the game which I find to be nostalgic as the first time I played HL2 was in dx8 mode on a ti4200.
>>12807093>can't find it anywhereHave you tried typing the game's name and system into a search engine? Because it was the first 2 results for me in fuckducksgo.
>>12806996Best Donkey Kong port ever:https://youtu.be/6_h9b0GdbFY
>>12807104>There are still people recommending the N64 version of RE2 after several anons went in detail in how shit it isI've seen this, it's persistent. I think partly it's just tendie glazers though, Nintendo Community Managers (or their bots) who constantly pump up Nintendo shit on the board, especially when something's going to be remade, remixed, re-released, remastered, etc.>>12807108It's one thing to recommend playing, say, Saturn Quake as an interesting little excursion into gaming. It's another to tell people Saturn Quake is "great" or even "good" when that isn't true. >>12807121The version I had in my old X68k collection didin't work, looks like there is another X68x collection since I looked last. Thanks. I'll try it.>>12807124kek
>>12806996Didn't you notice all of the recomp shilling?>"a recomp will always be faster and better than an emulator, bad recomps (90% of them) are not true recomps, trust and believe">"a recomp is not an emulator, despite all of the emulator parts in the source code. please respect the recomp pronouns">"stop nitpicking about the author or ai or bugs or any noticeable dubious patterns in the recomp, and just open the damn exe you enemy of the state. It is the best version ever and the updates will prove it">recomp page and xitter "account from india" disappears a few hours later>"this is proof open source and security checks, sucks to be you if you got this slow gpumaxxing computer std while it was up">but emulators and original versions are totally bad>unless they're "repacks from RoarKhan with bharati-made one click launchers of course"
I'll play any crappy port so I can mock it properly
>>12807676Oh sure, take 'em for a spin. Play them a bit. Play all the way to the end if it amuses you. The issue is when people recommend or insist objectively shitty ports are the way to play. They're just being cruel or they're poorly adjusted.
Ps1 Xmen vs Street fighterSaturn SOTNN64 Resident evil 2PC MGS1Genesis ghouls n ghostsI played all of these inferior ports and had fun. Would I recommend some of these version? Yes if someone asks for the best N64 games, RE2 would be there even when its an inferior port. Some people are just obsessed over what port/version is the best and threads turn into flamewars
>>12807005keep up the good work
>>12807093It's very easy to find unless you mean a physical copy.
If I may contribute:>Pc engine shinobi>Mega man wily wars, no retrobit or genesis mini>GG sonic 2> Unlicensed Gradius II for ms>Spectrum out run
>>12808061>Spectrum out runkek had to look it up
>>12806996>Morrowind on xboxWas that a port? Wasn't it made for the xbox? am I retarded?
>>12808123It was made for Windows. It's best played with a mouse and keyboard and there are several brutal bugs in the Xbox version that were never fixed. Today most people play on OpenMW it seems because some deep engine bugs simply can't be fixed.
N64 StarCraftPS1 Command and ConquerPS1 Marvel vs Capcom
>>12808138>PS1 Command and ConquerMy buddy had this, I didn't really care for it. It turned me off of even trying the PC games, which I knew existed at the time, but had forgotten about in the mean while.
>>12808119that port is a shame because the Spectrum could do much better at the time:https://youtu.be/oGFPLVrlnBsand more so today:https://youtu.be/qpKGZ7dMpIc
>>12808187I think the problem the Spectrum had was the colors they chose. They're too bright and garish, everything looks like you're on acid in Vegas with that system.People complain about the C64's more muted tones and it's quite possible to create awful looking games with it, of course, but they just made for much better looking games. And if you wanted brighter colors all you had to do back in the day was crank the color dial up.
>>12808201The Spectrum only had 4 colors bro.
>>12808207Ah yes I'm thinking of the Spectrum 128. Which is often what people show pics of when they talk about good looking Spectrum games.
>>12808207>>1280821915 colors, it didn't change with the 128k models>>12808201Yeah, the palette is horribly garish & kitsch, I don't think you'll find many spectrum enjoyers that'll defend it.By "do much better" I was referring about how the games play, the Outrun port was very slow & jerky:https://youtu.be/QrNKBv5wuQo
>>12808254>OI ME SPECCY INNIT IT CAN DISPLAY 15 SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT COLOURS YA CUNT
>>12808254>Yeah, the palette is horribly garish & kitsch, I don't think you'll find many spectrum enjoyers that'll defend it.>no brown>no flesh tone>two nearly identical of each of the reds, greens, yellows, magentas, cyansIt essentially only had 5 colors plus black, white, and grey. The only logical explanation I can come up with is somebody on the team imagined that the bitmap graphics would be created by print people in halftone and people would be sitting so far away from their fuzzy, small tellies that it would blend together as well as those nearly exact same tones do on the printed page giving the illusion of a continuous tone when viewed from far enough away.In this case it makes perfect sense. They simply consulted an expert and in those days, experts on the matter had experience in video and print, not computer graphics.
>>12808260It's simpler than that in that it's not really a palette but a 4 bit RGBI color encoding, so you can just toggle whether the color has Red, Green and/or Blue through separate bits, plus an intensity boost.
>>12807008Nobody ever said that the NES version of Pool of Radiance was the better version, I know for I'm the only one who actually beat it alongside another anon who was just passing. It's objectively inferior to the missing content but it's an interesting version due to the balancing being different.
>>12806996It's Austers new schtick and you noticing and posting about it is just going to embolden him to do it more.
People ITT getting mad at Nintendo ports reminded me of the Ys situation.I personally think the Famicom version of Ys is the better game, sure it's different but in a better ways, there are more enemies overall and the final dungeon which was awful in the original was replaced by a much better one. But everyone always dimisses that version as crap without saying why... and the tell sign is that they do the same with Ys 3 despite that version being identical to the other versions content wise and being a perfectly valid way to play the game. It all reeks to me like "Nintendo bad", or to clarify "Ys is OUR computer RPG series! Nintendo versions are bad by definition"
