>hear forever that the time limit ruins the game so I skip it>finally play it this year>it's not an actual time limit, it's just a mechanic that throws you into NG+ if you abuse your dragon powers>but also you keep all your shit so with each NG+ you need to rely on your dragon powers less and less>also the game was apparently designed to be 100% beatable in one playthough without ever restarting once, it's just really tedious to do so since it requires playing super cautiouslyI'm surprised this is the thing everyone bitched about back in the day and not that they completely changed the setting.
>>12807778>and not that they completely changed the settingEvery BOF game has the remnants of ancient technology from an advanced civilization,
>>12807778There has never been a genuine argument against DQ that didn't boil down to sucking at video games.
>>12807778It's basically a roguelite before those kind of games started getting popular and popping up everywhere
>>12808021>Every BOF game has the remnants of ancient technology from an advanced civilization,Every JRPG has the remnants of ancient technology from an advanced civilization,
>>12808021Yeah but they were fantasy games before, not post-apocalyptic.
>>12808198>not post-apocalyptic.2 literally has a radioactive island.
>>12808031Pretty much. But because it was unironically so ahead of its time, people didn't know what to think of it and most complaints boiled down to "I can't play this like the previous games."
>>12808024Nobody gives Nina clothes that aren't a sheer rag.
>>12808198DQ is still a fantasy game.
>>12807778There is also the fact your dragon quotient increases during the game and you can carry it over to new games and unlock new areas locked to lowly peasants.
Same reason a lot of retards hated Majora's Mask
Tried to play it this year and was a drag. Same base tactic in the early game through the late game. Uninteresting world, npcs, sub-systems, everything. But it must scratch some specific itch for it's fans, but man, I tried to like it.
>>12808829MM is an actual time limit though, in DQ it only ticks up because of YOUR choices
Kinda looks similar to MMX8
>>12809936It ticks up based on movement slowly but I get lost alot in games so that affects me
>>12809936Yes but in MM you can just get to the statue before a dungeon, reset time, use the song of half time then warp to the dungeon entrance and have enough time that you have to be very slow and retarded to not be able to finish the dungeon before time runs out. In both cases it's retards not understanding how game mechanics work.
>>12807778Basically, Majora's Mask and Lightning Returns
>>12808172Including Zelda too
>>12809979Probably had a bunch of the same people at Capcom work on it.
>>12807778I never played the game, why would you use dragon powers if they make you reset the playthrough?
>>12811240Ryu is kinda shitty and weak, but his D-Form is so strong even bosses can't do much against it
>>12811240It can sometimes be "cheaper" to use D-counter than to get into a fight that wastes resources or that you simply lose. It is "cheaper" to use D-counter as early as you know you need to instead of saving it for the last second when you've already burned through everything you have.A good example of the former are these hallways full of unavoidable Element Lizards who are a pain to deal with and will force you to waste healing items for little reward. It's better to D-Dash through them for a small bit of counter than to fight them for little gain compared to the resource loss and the cost of your own mental fortitude.A good example of the latter is literally any boss encounter. At the earliest point you realize your strategy isn't going to work, just D-Dive and take the win instead of waiting until all your healing items and other options are spent to do it. The thing about Dragon Quarter is that if a battle isn't going your way, you probably aren't going to magically turn it around, and keeping or losing resources now is something you'll feel in multiple hours.
>>12807778If you're playing the actual disc, be aware that the earliest release has a fuckup where the ending doesn't play. If you're emulating, you probably don't have to worry.
>>12811328Nah I'm playing in emu. My ps2 laser barely works anymore, I need yo get an hdd and mod the thing to load off of
I was really digging this game awhile back because I too remember hearing people shit on it a lot and I didn't mind the mechanic with limiting your dragon powers, but certain encounters could be pretty brutal or grindy, maybe I just wasn't playing the game right, I got as far as the Deamoned but had a hard time killing him, and I just looked up a video and saw someone kill him on turn one.Otherwise I really dig the art direction and a lot of the mechanics are interesting, but I gotta go back for a fresh game to see if I fare any better than last time.
