What the fuck? What the fuck?...What the fuck?
>>12807910Circle is cancel on at a minimum 100 ps1 titles. You get devs get to map controls
>>12807910>americans are stupid
>>12807910The 3ft long cords are what really annoy me about Japanese controllers. You practically have to sit right next to the television or have the console directly in your lap
>>12807910Did Japanese devs never hear of in-game remapping before?
>>12807910To this day I still want an official explanation for this. No, not "X marks the spot" or other madeup internet bullshit, I want an actual statement from the SONY executive that thought of and/or approved this change for the American market. I wonder if we'll ever get one, stranger factoids have leaked over the years.
>>12808013I guess because in the US, an X in a box can indeed be used to mark something as your selection on a document. Japan's "circle is right, X is wrong" thing just doesn't carry over to the American market. The funny thing about it is, assuming they were motivated to change the standard due to what the button symbols could mean outside of the context of the games, I think they were vastly overestimating how much outside the box thought people put into the meaning of the symbols on the buttons. I'd wager that the overwhelming majority of players, myself included, just saw game instructions say something like "the X button is the selection button/action button" and put no further thought into it, beyond recognizing that most games used this scheme.
>>12807910X = actionTriangle = returnO = cancel
>>12807910Using an xbox or ps controller in emu's becomes even worse.
>>12807910Some SNES games also used the bottom button as confirm.
Circle was cancel in Europe.
>>12808086>I guessHE SAID AN ACTUAL STATEMENT
>>12807910>itt a child discovers that a world exists outside it's head>>12808013>i want i want i wantThis is officially a baby retard thread
>>12807910cross and frictionless ball are both used as confirm in games where triangle is cancel.
>>12808013X is the button your thumb naturally sits atO = okay in japanX = no good/strike outthere was no equivalent in the US unless you made one button a checkmark and the other a X mark
>>12808013Here's my madeup internet bullshit:My guess is it has nothing to do with the symbols. They just wanted the lowest and easiest to press button to be "Yes", and then chose the button farthest from that one to be "No".
>>12808649>frictionless ball
>>12807921In this case, the correct answer is "OP is stupid"Consequently...
O was used as cancel too, but w/e bait image anyway
>>12808636>>>/lgbt/
>>12808013You CHOOSE
>>12807910>Low effort training thread
>"unga bunga me no like [inconsequential thing]"Don't you bitches have anything else to worry about?
>>12807993They consider that a mark of failure in game development.
>>12808013It's because Sony America was scared that Nintendo would sue them with the cancel/confirm buttons were in the same place I guess
>>12807910AFAIK many USA/PAL PSX games swapped O/X for Confirm/Cancel. there was no consistency on this. i only ever played the Japanese version of FF6, by mistake, and i don't remember if they used O for confirm.
>>12809161Didn't the console ports of SF2 have remapping? It's basically a necessity for games to have their own remapping post-NES.
>>12807910
for me it's Y cancel B confirm
>>12809180 >>12807993i remember most SNES and Genesis games had button remapping in their main menu >> settings.both anime games and ugly westernly /co/ games.but most PSX games don't seem to have that even though symbols and shapes are more confusing to me than buttons with letters. it's possible they hardcoded the tutorial missions and such in PSX games , so they can't change configs for buttons.
>Ape Escape on PSX>X and O are both confirm>Square is to cancel/go back alongside Triangle
>>12808013Closest button to the thumb means yes. The button sitting opposite to it means no.Simple as.
>>12807910I never had a SNES. If RED to confirm is indeed a common thing, it's putrid design. But the major problem here is the color of the button. Anything related to Confirm, Accept, Action, Yes, Use, Check, Investigate = BLUE/GREEN color. The opposite = RED color.Maybe this my playstation biased brain, but a red colored confirm button, like Circle and A, doesn't make any sense>>12807917yep
>>12807910They should have used O to confirm everywhere and mentioned in the manual that the number of strokes in each shape tells you what priority the button has. This is how I've perceived snoy controllers after running into picrelated about 20 years ago.
>>12807910I legitimately do not care which is which just fucking pick ONE and stick to it
>>12808013In japan circle means yes and cross means no because of game/variety shows there use that standard.
>>12809510The Playstation buttons were supposedly pictures of what functions they performed. The Circle and X were yes and no, the Square button represented a Menu and the Triangle was like a compass marker which implied a Map.
>>12809527that's.... bananas!
>>12809985It's funny because most Jarpigs used Triangle for the menu.
>>12808086>I guess because in the US, an X in a boxI thought americans used the check mark?
>>12810061Both're fine. When we're feeling EXTRA-lazy, it's just a line.
>>12810061>I thought americans used the check mark? There's also those standardized tests where you have to fill the circle.>filled circle = good>empty circle = bad Which is why no American wants to press the empty circle button.
>>12808114In other words, there was no standard until Sega solved the problem.
I guess this all comes down to Nintendo not realizing that the NES layout is not a diamond layout. You would have to bend your wrist to play Mario the "intended" way on an SNES controller.
Nintendo got the SNES controller right the first time. You wouldn't even need ingame button remapping. But alas, we ended up getting the jarpig mapping, sometimes by default in action games. Right button for primary needs top button for secondary. Or bottom for primary and left for secondary. Even Mario All Stars had ingame remapping for no reason other than jarpigs exist.
>>12810163Wow that looks like it'd be way better. But I think they realized their very slow console couldn't handle MD/PCE-style high octane action games so they went with a button layout that catered to JRPGs instead.
>>12809931Fucking this. I play games on multiple systems and from multiple time periods and having confirm and cancel constantly being swapped around on me is a headache.
>>12808093Another reason to have a unique gamepad for every console. I think I have everything now, and it's all wireless.
>>12807921
>>12807982What's the standard cord length everywhere else?
>>12808636>a world exists outside it is head
>>12809214So why is Circle red and X blue?
>>12810163Perfect B & A position. And they had Y at the top and X at the side then it would equate to the X and Y axis.
>>12808093>>12810216If you can't remember the button orientation and rely on labels, then you have no spatial orientation and you're basically retarded.
>X marks the spot!
>>12810163>JarPigsYou are not cute nor clever
PS1 controller is easy on the hands unlike that other one.
>>12810921Why is B) so smug
>>12810820Probably 6ft or so. It's a substantial difference
>>12810216>to have a unique gamepad for every consolei m o, one of the core aspects about experiencing a console is using its original controller.trust me, the controller is 50% of the experience
>>12808093I have never had issues using my xbone controller in emu
>>12807982You were supposed to take the console out each time and put it on the floor between the TV and yourself.
>>12811589wow what a difference!
>>12807910Triangle for back on OG PS is such a nostalgia trip. I bet the zoomers all trip up on that everytime
>>12809693These controllers are built like bricks. I still use them as backups (they're not very good as far as feel)
SNES USA X/Y smarties buttons felt so good I still think about them.
>>12811760i mean i guess if you wanna do that sure, but its annoying as hell and more wires out means retards will trip over it
