I genuinely think Crash 1 and 2 are better than Mario 64. There is actually some semblance of challenge present, and they used the 3D to more effectively have a broad range of challenges compared to Mario 64, where you largely just got to avoid all the enemies and run in empty space.

I would say the use of 3D in a platformer was perfected with Banjo Kazooie.
>>
Yes, Mario 64 was the death of challenge based platformers towards a new trend of "exploration" based ones, to the point that the term "platformer" became a generic branding for 3D action games in which platforming isn't even the focus like Banjo or Spyro.
This is also why the modern "Retro Gamer™" likes those games more, the point of game not being challenge but exploration and gathering stuff, is closer to what modern gaming is, while challenge based games have long disappeared hence some people not understanding Crash Bandicoot at all and claiming that the most basic things about it are "objective bad game design".

It's a series of hallways where scripted events happen and you move through in sequence. Crash is indeed borderline one of those infinite runner games.

It's more about gameplay density, mario 64 is a comfortable middle ground between modern AAA and classic games. Not too overwhelming, lots of breathing room, player controlled pacing. Crash has a nice stream of action that has a rhythm to it.

>gameplay density
This phrase is just a more retarded version of APM.

I like Crash but it's pretty much a 2D game. Mario 64 is closer to Spyro.
>>
>>12808684
It's a different measurement entirely when you think about it.

I genuinely think you make the shittiest ragebaiting threads you faggot
>>

Mario 64 is obviously more technically impressive but it's mostly an empty series of fields that you have to navigate, and then replay several times to beat. The novelty of running around wears thin.
>>
>>12808549
I prefer Mario 64 but i understand someone prefering Crash

They hardly the same genre

Crash is a pure platformer
Mario 64 is an exploration game with platform elements
>>
>>12808549
Can you fly like an eagle in crash bandicoot? No? Then it's not as good.

I bet the polygon count from a single screen of Crash Bandicoot exceeds an entire Mario 64 level

Crash himself has more polygons than Lara Croft LMAO.

No it’s not. The Crash devs were deleting parts of Sonys libraries to squeeze out more performance and their scene culling was next level at the time.
>>
what crash does is pretty routine. it does it well but its platforming tropes you've encountered repeatedly in gaming over the years. from the 3rd and 4th gen through to the 6th.
I think you can make an argument that mario 64 fails to properly leverage mario's moveset(I would mostly disagree) but just that the moveset and the possibility of it being leveraged is more interesting to many than anything crash offers.
>>
>>12808562
>This is also why the modern "Retro Gamer™" likes those games more
no I disagree. the modern retro gamer prefers 64 because there's more novel skill ceiling in its moveset.
>this is a pretty challenging conventional platformer
doesn't stand out at all.

Crash invented the runner game genre
>>

I wouldn't say Crash 1 is better, but Crash 2 and 3 definitely are. Still, the Spyro trilogy mogs BOTH Mario and Crash.

Hugo is the better corridor platformer
