I was never a big fan of the build engine games. Not that the games themselves were bad, it's just that the engine always felt off to me in a way the doom engine never did. The movement in all three main build games always feel floaty and not in the good way, rather imprecise and slippery. They way it renders 3d makes me sick when looking up and down due to warp effect and looking up and down is necessary in them, unlike doom. There are bunch of other issues that I can't really describe, only that every game I play on that engine just has a certain stank to it for me. I wish all three games were possible to be recreated on the gzdoom engine. Doesn't really help that, unlike Doom, I find the games themselves to be a chore to play for the most part, even though they're objectively good games.
>>12808710I'm actually the opposite. I like the more realistic environments that Build games have. More fun to explore and go through as opposed to Dooms abstract and 'funhouse' feel. But liek you said, they're all good games.
All you need to do is play with a sourceport which supports a true 3D opengl renderer like EDuke32, nBlood and VoidSWalso Blood's movement is completely different from the others for instance
Not retro and kind off topic but anyone who hasn't already, try Ion Fury. I think it's actually funner than Duke, Blood or Shadow Warrior. I agree with OP that the original games can be a bit tedious to play even though they're GG in many ways
>>12808710I'm also the opposite. It's the most soulful psuedo 3D engine out there. Way better than Doom. Shadow Warrior is just so much bombastic fun. Way more going on that other FPS of the time, and I was lucky we got it working in our computer lab in 1997-98 and played 8 player deathmatch and built our own stages. Way better than Goldeneye.
