A couple years ago I found a Sega Saturn in a box of random junk in the shared basement of a rowhome I was renting one of the floors of. It was almost certainly from a previous tenant. It was covered in dirt/dust and smelled weird but had the power cord. I cleaned it, got a new controller and video cables, and found out that it worked perfectly, no issues with the disc drive or anything. (It had the common issue of the power port becoming cracked and partially detached from the mobo, but a quick solder job and 3D-printed bracket later it's all better now.)
My guess is that whoever owned it just stuffed it in that box probably over 10 years ago and forgot about it when they moved out.
What was really cool is that it came with one of those third party memory cards that let you play import games. And on top of that it was the kind you could flash PseudoSaturn Kai onto, so one disc swapping trick later I had access to the full worldwide library of Saturn games for free.

I lived in a shitty apartment ten years ago. I went to the alley to take out some trash and found a Spyro 2 disc on the ground near the laundromat, and of course I kept it. It was all scratched up and didn't work, but maybe someday I'll get that fixed. Maybe.

I bought a house and the previous owners left almost everything that wasn't a bed or couch in it and found a bunch of various Sega consoles in the garage and the only one that still worked was the fucking Saturn of all things. I ended up giving it to my uncle because he really liked Sega he modded it and uses it still.
Another non retro example was I found a 360 just sitting in the woods while hiking, it must not have been there very long because it looked pretty clean overall and it also didn't function but it did power on (RROD).

I found a 3DO in the flooded basement of a rental property my dad owned that had been abandoned by the tenants. I was maybe 10 or 12 and did not know exactly what it was. It had a couple of FMV games with it and I was able to get enough of a vague impression that it was some kind of old interactive-DVD type thing. I did not realize that it was a rare item in any way and wasn't very interested in trying to take it, even if I would have been allowed to. There was also an original DMG-01 Game Boy which I was more interested in, but since I already had a Game Boy Color and a GBA by that time, I figured it wasn't worth trying to take that either.
I think all of that stuff probably just got trashed in the flood cleanup anyway, so I really should have insisted.

I found a perfect condition Conan NES game inside a case that had worthless ladies' combs and various other junk for 25 bucks.

a few years ago my mother's lawyer's son got a ps4 and wanted to get rid of all his old things he "didn't need anymore".
i got a modchipped ps2, a few memory cards, a whole bunch of controllers (most bootleg or broken, but 2 of them were legit and one of the bootlegs actually worked) and like, 20+ ps2 games for free.
also a sony trinitron crt, a very large, flat screen model
many of the games were shovelware crap, but there were a few decent highlights, like gran turismo 3 and 4, gta 3, ratchet & clank 1 and deadlocked, tekken tag tournament, lotr two towers and return of the king, lego star wars and some medal of honor games
there was also this game which is ABSOLUTE DOGSHIT but it's actually somewhat rare for whatever reason

I found a Mega Drive II with Mega CD II sitting out by the trash at an apartment site near home once, with a copy of Sonic 1 in there.

Took it home and my brother checked it out, turns out the system was perfectly fine but the Sonic 1 cart was dead, was a good find.

I bought an OG Xbox for $100 while it was still the current system standing out in front of a game crazy, I just bought a game boy advance (scratched up case) for $45 from a store that lowballed the seller and the store let me make an offer he accepted (scratched up case) and I got 2 32” CRT 1 Sony 32” Flat Screen CRT and 1 Panasonic (both early 2000’s silver plastic) for free with remotes at an estate sale 2 years ago, I gave them $20 anyways cause I felt a little guilty but they wanted them gone so I said here’s $20 for some coffees, thank you.

Also got a Dreamcast for $20 in 2005 with the box and tossed the box cause who needs cardboard boxes, found a nice NES Advantagd for $2.99 10 years ago. Also lost my PS2 box (gran Turismo pack in) that one I tried to keep cause I like the way it looked and paid full price for my PS2 when it was current gen. Mad I lost it, no idea how. Lost all kinds of cool boxes over the years no idea how, including SNES. Guess that’s why boxes are pretty rare nowadays. Kept my 3DS box and have a Japanese Saturn Box so I at least got that going for me
>>
Not me, but i know someone who picked up a box out for trash while on their way to work that was absolutely filled with all of the best, high priced, us and jap playstation and dreamcast games you could imagine, all looked as if they were brand new and never played. If he had been a few minutes later they would have been picked up by the trash truck. Dude traded it in at the local game store and walked away with 3000 dollars. Must have belonged to a collector who died or result of a pissed off girlfriend.

>found a PS1 at Goodwill for like $20 back in 2015, but ended up being a retard and returned it because I couldn't think of anything at the time I wanted to play on it
>found a Sony CRT TV in the trash this year, still have it, dunno what console I'll get for it
I guess I'm just a retard when it comes to retro consoles, though I emulate games all the time. A while ago someone told me that since I don't have any existing consoles, the best thing I can get for the CRT I found is a modded Wii so I'm thinking about it. Might get a PS2 with a modchip instead since that's been the focus of my emulation lately.

My dad used to go to auctions to buy computer equipment to resell. One time he bought a lot, and in that lot were a bunch of random boxes of electronics stuff. One of those boxes just happened to contain an Atari 2600 Jr, a couple of joysticks and paddle controllers, the power cord, and a whole bunch of games. There were also a few Intellivision games for some reason, which inspired me to look for one at the local flea market.

A copy of Fallout 1 left in a box in front of the recycling bins in 2009 and a copy of Shadowman on the Nintendo 64 that a bus ran over but still worked in 2007. I played through Fallout 1 like a dozen times, but dropped Shadowman after an hour and never played it again. I do own the nightdive re-release of Shadowman that I will attempt to play before the end of the year if I stop getting distracted by Virtua Fighter 1.

I found a boxed Mega Drive 2 in somebody's trash once (it was sticking out of the top). It worked just fine. That was over 20 years ago though, before the retroomer epidemic and when you couldn't even give old consoles away. Makes me wonder just how much stuff that worked perfectly fine was thrown in the trash back then because it was literally worthless.

Found in an alley alongside some games. Unfortunately, the box was very cut up/used for target practice (BBs or crossbow would be my guess). The system and games were still in good condition, but I had to get replacement cases for Mickey Mania and Spiderman CD which did get hit by the bullets.
>>
I found a copy of Nintendogs in a junkyard once while pulling some parts (a control arm for my father's Dodge Dakota I think). I cleaned all the packed dirt out and let it dry for a few days and when I tried it out it worked fine. It still had the save data too so I call those my Junkyard Dogs.

My uncle used to be a dumpster diver, he found some cool shit in the trash at his storage including a Sega Master System, two Atari 2600's with a box of around 50 games, an Intellivision, and a NES.

Found a cheap copy of Shatterhand on NES that had a cheap eaten label with sharpie and the cart sheel was broken but the pcb was fine, cleaned up and got a spare NES cart and printed it a custom label, and gave it as a gift to an old friend of mine,I already own a copy of the game I found on an old small flat market that long cease to exist, also got there Magic of Scheherazade.

Also don't know if this count but, I found my copy if KickMaster on a shit local that had the same old crappy NES titles that dint care on after being balled out of not being able to buy 3 NES games that were overpriced to me at the time, I was a poor fag who could only carry 5 bucks but most places sold games cheap at Mexican pesos in the early 2010s and late 2000s.

And months later that other place was liquidating shit that didn't sold and got all those other games for dirt cheap each at the end!

Before that I bought Battle of Olympus but that one cost me 9 bucks and it was too much for me and sorta of a remorse buy (this was before the USD to MXN ratio went to shit)

Only thing I ever found was a copy of Guitar Hero 2 when it was still like a 30 dollar game on the ground, complete with manual and in good shape. Not retro of course but I was super into the series at the time so that was awesome. Otherwise I've found all my finds at used game stores or through a few private sales.
