Does anyone have any recommendations for rg 40xx H? I'm planning to buy it
I think people are overhyping the Duo Lite too much. It’s $50 more than the DS Plus, yet it>doesn’t integer scale>can’t play 3DS>isn’t OLEDThe only benefits I can see are the ability to play PSP and maaaybe better battery life, and we don’t even know that latter point for sure. If you already have a Mangmi or an RP5, I’d still say the DS Plus is better for DS
posting in new thread, should I get the Nova or Duo if I already have an RP5 and Thor?

Every so often I think I want a handheld, but then a make a window on my PC the same size as the handheld I want and all the desire goes away because that shit is just too small.
>>12809283its fine, you might see complaints about it heating up but I've never felt it, probably because I don't try and force it to punch above its weight with Dreamcast and stuff. Feels pretty good too because its rounded and flat

>>12809303>>12809309so you never had a Game Boy or anything?
not that anon, but I also never had a gameboy or anything. It was just not a thing here. Back in the 00s I experienced the glory of the gba through the VBA emulator on a CRT monitor from the 90s.>>12809303This is how it looks making a window in my notebook screen, considering some 16:9 screen. I took the measurements in cm from google. Its not that bad, but not sure if its worth the money, considering that I can already run an emulator on the notebook, in the first place. I will try a smaller screen next.
if you've never had a handheld, and don't see the appeal of a handheld then yeah, don't buy a handheld
>>12809287>>isn’t KEKOLEDthat's A Good Thing
>>12809348holy shit, now this is getting too small, if I got it right, but still looks playable.
>>12809303the posters in this thread are reaching levels of retarded that shouldn't be even possible
>>12809365it might be better to use retrosizer in OP to get a better idea on how these look

>>12809287>It can't play 3DSThey showed that they can handle non intensive shit.
>>12809295>Who the fuck is shopping for these scams while having a real chinkheld?Playing DS on a single screen always feels wrong, there’s no way around it. I’ve seen people on Reddit that want the DS Plus even though they have a Nova, because they literally just want it for DS, and think spending extra on a Duo is redundant.
>>12809384>I’ve seen people on Reddit thatYeah...>>12809348>>12809365Use the first link on OP, dumbass.
>>12809303now try playing on that while lying down on the couch in the other room, or at the park, or on a train.
I really feel like I'm "done" with this hobby for a while. Between an Odin 2 Portal and now a Nova, all of my bases are covered. I also use Moonlight/Sunshine to stream from my PC, so I can't think of anything I'd want to play that I can't already run.
>>12809457Um, you need a dualscreen from DS/3DS...
>>12809473Try Greenport Fire's Lucille sauce. Also, Melinda's ghost pepper hot honey is great if you haven't tried it yet.
>>12809287I agree. You can't have a device which looks great for both DS and 3DS without some sort of compromise with for resolutions or ergonomics. The duo also has the speakers at the bottom meaning muffled audio
>>12809484I got a gift set of Melinda's recently and started with the Habanero and loved it, gotta try the hotter ones. Not a big fan of hot honey though, I've tried it a number of times in different ways and it doesn't click.
>>12809485The ergonomic issue I imagine should eventually get solved years down the road when cheaper more efficient chips allow the devices to shed more weight and thickness. The actual DS/3DS get by on comfort due to being light and thin enough for any odd grip to not be straining.

>>12809538they really want to strike while the irons hot that's good, but the duo had a terrible looking top half in the prototype footage I hope they fix that before release
>>12809291im downgrading from the thor to duo. i only played 3ds/psp games so the extra horsepower was a waste. also if you sell your thor atm you can prob sell at a profit compared to what you bought it for.
>>12809582The product page says it starts shipping mid-October. How long it'll actually take to get to people's hands is a different story though, can't trust what they say.
>>12809538kinda lost on which color to get. tempted by "ice blue" which looks like mint greenish to me. but i will look like a clown carrying something that bright around. also fuck them for not having more pictures of the different colors.
Wish retroid didnt insist on 16-bit, gamecube, and ice blue every fucking time. Why can't we have the G2 colors like teal and yellow?
>>12809663I like red and it's always a toss up whether they're going to have it or not.
>>12809663I wish they would do black and red, this is still the best looking handheld ever
I wish their GC button colors was actually accurate to the placement of the GameCube's buttons. The position of the colors that they choose just isn't accurate to how cross-platform games mapped THEIR buttons back in the day.>green A should be on the bottom, red B on the left, Y on the top, and X on the right>Instead they use SFC layout and match the colors to the lettersugh
>>12809676Poorfag colors.
>>12809485With a pocketable handheld you inherently have to make compromises somewhere. As for a potential lack of dual integer scaling on DS, I don't think it'll impact Retroid users considering they weren't even able to notice that the Pocket Mini's original screen wasn't even a proper 960p originally.

>>12809814retro is not an arbitrary function of an arbitrary number of years passed, thends is a 4th generation modern era system
>>12809805There's also the asterisk that needs to be brought up, being that it's a "budget" option considering the ongoing RAM and memory crisis due to AI.
>>12809815>retro isn't about age, it's about an arbitrary "generation" definition that I decided on
>>12809805>149 dollars for a device with an SD665 and 4g of RAMThey could have done better than this even for a budget device.
>>12809663I really wish we had like a Saturn (Gray Japanese Model 1) or PSX themed retro handheld for once, I’m so fucking tired of them always using GC and SNES (USA & EU/JP) colors.
>>12809815>retro is not an arbitrary function of an arbitrary number of years passedIt quite literally is.>4th generation modern era systemDo you think people 25-30 years ago considered the N64 and PS1 to be "retro"? Of course they didn't, because "retro" refers to things that are old in terms of "years passed"."Retro" is not a real, quantifiable thing. It is something defined by the opinions of people. 99.9% of people generally agree on one (or multiple) of the following making a product "retro":1. It is at least 2 decades old. (Most people agreeing on the 15-20 range as a minimum)2. It is at least 2 generations behind the current generation. (Specifically for products or product categories that only push 1 or 2 "generations" per decade)3. It stopped being sold or supported at least 5-15 years ago. (Largely depends on how long the product was supported)4. If you are now a fully grown adult (24-32 years old), then anything that was released in your childhood (when you were 0-12 years old) is retro.5. The current generation has a major technological shift in standards, internal architecture, I/O compared to it.6. Its cost in the secondary market is retained or is increasing, unlike old/obsolete products which are cheaper and getting cheaper over time.Effectively everyone agrees that anything that is at least 20 years old is retro, while many if not most people think that things that are 12-19 years old can also be considered retro.Seeing how the NDS is 20+ years old and also fits most if not all of the definitions of "retro" above, it absolutely is a retro system. In fact, so are the following:>7th gen home consoles (PS3, Wii, Xbox360), and at the very minimum all the games that were released on these consoles within the first year.>Windows XP, Vista, and all the PC hardware released right up to the point of the release of Vista. Also, at the very minimum, all PC games released up until the release of Vista.
>>12809283>RG40XXHWill straight up melt if you're unlucky like that one Amazon reviewer.
>>12809894Don't waste your breath man, people just don't want to admit when they're old.
>>12809283I have one.>Powering it on sometimes requires you to hold the reset button first, and then hold the power button.>It does not have a sleep function. You have to do full shutdowns between gaming sessions if those gaming sessions are more than a day apart. Most ROMs do have an auto-save on shutdown feature.>Performance is a hit or miss depending on the ROM. People love recommending muOS but it has worse PS1 and PSP performance compared to stock OS, rocknix and knulli.>It ships with bad SD cards that risk getting corrupted in less than a year of active use. So consider that it will cost $10 extra. Keep your saves and settings on your fresh/good SD card. All these issues affect other Anbernic devices that use the same chipset. So all the XX devices plus some extra ones like the new RG SP.
>>12809898in the cases of 1 guy with a device that melted he probably left it on in his bag and didn't realize then blamed the chineseium. the amount of times I've almost cooked a handheld by not suspending it properly makes me think its pretty easy to do

>>12809894>It quite literally is.it literally isn't. you don't understand what retro means
>>12809830it's not an arbitrary generation definition, it is a very rigorously defined one with a static and unchanging set of parameters that everyone who isn't a retarded zoomoidal understands inherently
>>12810130Explain it then. Why was 6th gen not considered retro when this board started, but recently now it is? What changed?
>>12810132>I don’t HAVE to explain it, you just gotta feel the vibes! What is this foid-coded language doing in my 4chan board? Buddy, I know the whole “retro is when we didn’t have modern gaming poison like live services or microtransactions or DLC or blah blah blah” idea, but the Nintendo DS didn’t have any of those things; it is as classic-styled gaming as the GBA was. It is both objectively old, and is built like older systems that ARE considered retro. So if you want to tell the majority of the world that they’re wrong, and that it ISN’T retro, you have to explain why.
Hey guys, I'm new to the whole handheld scene and I'm looking to buy just one. Im torn between the Odin Portal 2 and the Retroid Nova. Im mainly looking to play PS2 and GC games as well as some indie titles like Balatro, Silksong, Slay the Spire, Issac, etc. Im leaning towards the Nova since the 4:3 screen looks great and the size of the device is to my liking but I'm worried ill run into some problems if I want to expand my game collection. Should I go for the Nova or play it safe and go for the Odin Portal 2?
>>12810134>>12810137Ignore the fucking troll. This is correct >>12809894 and the troll is just being retarded on purpose.
>>12809291Stop buying shit you don't need you dumb tranime coomer, use what you have and upgrade to something in 2-3 years that will be meaningfully superior
>>12810139Just go for the Nova. The Portal 2 has a larger battery, but is chunkier and heavier. It does have a larger display, but that means it will need more power to scale things to match the native display resolution (and it cannot really scale most of the PS2 library to 1080p)
Why does the RG DS take so long to charge? I swear the XX devices only took an hour or two

>>12810195consoomers with more money than sense deserve to get milked like that, if it works for apple it works for the chinese.
>>12810225Upgrading in 2-3 years was reasonable when devices were getting noticeably more powerful. Unless emulators get some revolutionary updates I don't see a reason to get anything more powerful than an SD8gen2, in 2-3 years I might just be getting replacement batteries for my current handhelds instead. Devices are more constrained by compatibility than power currently.
>>12810139>between the Odin Portal 2 and the Retroid NovaI have both, it really depends on what you're looking for. The Portal is great for anything modern, particularly games with text. But it feels too big for some systems like GBA, and it's bulky to take out of the house. Nova appropriately sized for everything and feels more comfy and portable. But the screen is nowhere near as nice as the Portal. Also consider the control layouts. Nova is better for primarily d-pad, Portal is better for modern stick games. It's still early, but the Nova has already become my primary handheld for emulation. I mostly use the Portal for streaming PC games.
Only Atari 2600 and older are retro to me.
how much of an improvement would the Nova be over my RP5 for retro games?
>>12810364A big improvement if your definition of retro includes gamecube and ps2.
>>12810247Not enough high-end clamshells in the market. They got overwhelmed by buyers because there were no other alternatives, just Thor. It's still going be a pain because the Duo is still significantly weaker than the Thor, but the Duo at least helps bridge the gap for people who desperately want something stronger than an RG DS. With the exception of Thor and Nova, this whole market hates putting powerful chipsets in small handhelds for some reason.
>>12810370I'd rather play Gamecube and PS2 on my ROG Xbox Ally X because dual stick games aren't great on small handhelds I've found so far
>>12810370rp5 can play ps2 fine at 2x, any game it can't run properly is because of the emulator not the chipset
>>12810386If it still chugs on a game after decades of emulator development, it's not ever going to be fixed by the emulation devs. That means you have to buy a more powerful handheld whether you want to use flowery language or not
>>12809538Pre-ordering anything is fucking retarded and you get what you deserve if you fall for this tactic.>Pre-ordered Diablo 3
>>12810406ps2 android emulation has not been worked on for decades it's been like 4 years and there's a difference between chugs and not working properly, the ps2 android emulator offerings are all half finished and have problems people run multiple builds depending on the game even on the strongest hardware.
>>12810410Unlike Americans, the Chinese always fix their fuckups for free if you send it back to them, so who cares?
>>12810418I still wonder why no one else bothered to pick up where the AetherSX2 dev left off, unless he was the only autist that knew what he was doing.
Is transparent plastic weaker? I kind of want a Ice Blue Duo, but I'm worried about this.
>>12809582My July 21 pre-order is closing in on two months. You're not seeing this anytime soon.
>>12810446The transparent models were weaker on the RP Flip 1 but stronger on the Flip 2. So there's no telling how it's going to turn out on the Duo until like 6 months after people have theirs.
>>12809641You'll look like a clown no matter how you slice it, pick the one you want.
>>12810450I guess I'm just going to gamble
>>12810406>If it still chugs on a game after decades of emulator development, it's not ever going to be fixed by the emulation devs. No, it actually is. PS2 emulators have basically not been worked on on ARM/Android for years. The work on PS2 emulation only recently picked up the pace again with ARMSX2. Older versions of PS2 emulators were doing PS2->x86->ARM translation in many places, which was inefficient as fuck. And a lot of direct PS2->ARM translation was improperly done because developers had no idea how ARM works. Devs only recently started actually diving deep into ARM and found that several places in the code were 3x-20x less efficient because people implementing that code didn't know ARM well.>>12810441Picking up another persons' code is not as simple as you think unless you were already involved in the project.

>>12810576>I think the regular duo will be enough for GC/PS2/3DS and belowEasily. The 865 already handles those okay and the chip in the Duo is around 33% better in performance. I can't see much reason to own a Thor unless you're really into PC games on Gamenative and even then, indie stuff is the only stuff I've played on it so far and the Duo should still do fine with those.
>>12810364Clearly you're a retard who blows up GBA games to fuckhuge sizes so buy whatever you want.
>>12810572Imagine fucking using a Thor for DS and 3DS games instead of real hardware.I have a Thor but I mostly play old PC games on it, and those DS games where the second screen is just a map or some shit like Castlevania or Chrono Trigger. For those it's an upgrade over a DSi XL, but for actual dual screen or touch games it's shit.

Doesn't matter that it usually requires a separate purchase, at least you have the option. On the flipside, systems without grips in the design can't be slimmed down to become pocketable. Feels like the pocket duo is only a slight upgrade / side grade to the thor lite at the same price. You are basically trading a larger primary screen for a 4:3 bottom screen and the top 5.5 matching aspect ratios when playing ds games. Bit underwhelming desu.

Anyways I liked how the UI looks now with the few additions made, and the shaders I'm using now are pretty cool too, loving ZFast CRT.
>>12812059I forced it to 4:3 and it's still the same thing. And with Xenogears it's got black bars on the top and bottom. Driving me crazy I'm not even sure what I'm doing wrong.

>>12812054Thin black bars at the top and bottom are normal. SNES games and many PSX games are 224 pixels tall, not 240
>>12809960He said it caught on fire while charging the battery. Pic related

>>12812054SNES games when integer scaled won't fill the Nova's 4.5" 1280x960 screen, since they're 256x224.The "screens" util linked in the OP copypasta helps to identify which systems scale perfectly or well on a given handheld. Most typical handhelds and consoles integer scale very well, but if you need the screen to be filled you've got to use a good shader that helps balance the pixels whilst maintaining the "look" of sharp square pixels whilst minimising shimmering. The 960p screen is good enough to achieve that.
>>12812054First you turn off integer scaling, then you find your interpolation shader of choice to even it out. Sharp-shimmerless is a good non-intrusive one.
How powerful is the RP Duo?
>>12812054>>12812124Shaders is specifically one of the strong suits of the Nova, when I get around to setting up ES-DE and Retroarch I want to try using this crt-gdv-mini-ultra + crt beam emulator shader that was shown in the Retro Game Corps video. There's an two hour long guide video I need to go through at some point, but right now I'm just trying out Dolphin and GameNative stuff.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1lD4LYUrVgMI was trying to get Spark the Electric Jester to run via GameNative last night, but that game is difficult to get running properly because it's built in Clickteam Fusion 2.5. The default config had a black screen, and changing the DX wrapper would produce graphics but the performance was abysmal.Changing the Wine Proton version to something 86_64 helped with the performance, but the game was running at half speed without taxing the system resources due to what appears to be an emulation or configuration issue that I still haven't solved after a few hours trying to troubleshoot it with Gemini.I was able to figure out manually modding the game though, there's a "Spark the Electric Jester Recharged" mod that greatly improves the native Windows desktop experience and fixes a number of bugs.

>>12811765I have a DSi XL and a N3DS XL, I bought a Thor but I kinda regret it. It only taught me that nothing can beat the original hardware.Well I do use it for some games like Phoenix Wright, but it's very limited, any game that requires zero latency or a lot of touch is just much better on the DSi XL. And I actually like the 3D effect and the emulator has fucking stutter on 3DS games due to shader compilation so 3DS games I play on the 3DS.Best use of Thor is playing Game Boy or Advance games on the bottom screen and watching ecelebs on top.
>>12812276Well, if you're aiming for proper integer scaling, then yes.You can always just scale the image above the resolution of your display, which will make the image fit your display but it would not be pixel perfect scaling (some lines would be squished).Alternatively, you could use some LCD or CRT shaders (or pixel correction shaders) and fuck around with certain parameters. Sometimes this can help filling in the gaps if you don't mind the image being transformed a little.

>>12813547there are very few DS games where the 3d models aren't just background shit made with less Polygons than year 1 ps1 games. Upscaling does not make the trees in Pokémon platinum look better. But if you're not integer scaling, the sprites now look like dogshit, and the sprites are the only good looking part of ds games. The real advantage of chinkhelds is fast forward, save states, and a hardware menu that isn't slow as fuck.
>>12812560When you play psp on a fucking 3 inch 4:3 screen, you've now shrunken the real screen area down to 2 fucking inches. It's irredeemable garbage. You don't play video games.
>>12813592I only remember the menus being slow on a 3DS with a micro sd card exceeding 32GB. Regular DS bios or a DS Pico flashcart are quite snappy.I think there is a case to be made for the RG DS Plus though since it does have that 4X interger scale and many DS Lite / i screens are prone to heavy ghosting or yellowing.
>>12813592it looks better on a thor than it does on the ds lite.
>>12813592>there are very few DS games where the 3d models aren't just backgroundThis is a lie you've already been disproven a million times, you even gave a list of the best ds games last thread and 60% of the list was either entirely 3D or was 2D but heavily used 3D assets.
>>12813616That's the sort of game suited for ds chinkhelds, minimal touch interaction and no need to synchronize the two screens or keep them the same size. Now try playing sonic rush without a headache, or just completing the later stages in elite beat agents.
>>12813546>SIMPLY FANTASTIC2000?I think there's still FrogUI but the R36S really killed it. There's always the RG353PS tho if that's still being sold
I'M GONNA DO IT, 1K FOR A CHINKHELD, LET'S FUCKING GO
>/vr/ - dual screens
Not one of the shitposters but I want to emulate anything but DS and 3DS games on a chinkheld.
If the 3DS were more powerful we wouldn't need chinkhelds and could just emulate on it instead
All DS and 3DS games are playable on a single-screen handheld.
>>12811239>>12811676>>12812905Okay but how much faster? And I doubt this is going to improve most handhelds really.
>>12813761Trust me you're not playing Sonic Rush / Adventure / Colors DS on a single screen.
>>12813761>implying anyone here plays video games
>>12813596>Nova>3 inch screenYou're retarded. Kill yourself.
>>12813761doom is playable on a smart fridge, doesn't mean i'd to play it there
>>12813769Trust me, I'm not playing Sonic games at all. The only non-shit one was that one fighting game they had on the GBA.
>>12813761Okay smart guy how do you see the pokemon attacks shile in battle
>>12813782Your press a bottom to see the bottom screen when picking attacks.
>>12813142If you keep putting and removing the caps, they'll loosen up. About as tall as underneath the cap, bit taller than the d-pad and buttons going by my RP5.
>>12813786p-press my bottom, anon-sama..
>>12813621No, from your own list only 20% were 3D.The ones that are "mixed 3D" are exactly as I've described, faggot. You've been debunked. You're literally talking about 3D assets with so few Polygons that it's basically 32X tier shit
