I shared the remakes with some coworkers and they legitimately can not learn to play the game. We grew up with the jank, were molded by it. Offer it to younger people and they'll have no clue how to adapt.

Lara Croft had no sex appeal and none was initially intended, but you didn't see Nintendo with anything similar. Not until Perfect Dark, but it was too late by then. Nintendo characters were all toons.

Tank controls are only difficult in games like Resident Evil where you have odd camera angles and constant switching between fixed cameras. In Tomb Raider the camera is rear center and follows better than a lot of modern games. The only real problem the game had was certain level designs didn't work with the low resolution and limited lighting effects. Certain pathways were very hard to see because all the textures blended together into a sea of grey or brown pixels and if there was a narrow passage through the rock or whatever it was easily missed.
